Create a Character!

Oh! Create!
(they/them, she/her)
Demon's Souls's remake just launched in a lot of the world alongside the PlayStation 5, and I think it would be apt to commemorate the larger series and From Software's modern catalogue for what's been a defining--yet less acknowledged--feature for them ever since they codified their current creative voice with the original Demon's Souls on PlayStation 3: the front-and-center player character creation. It's a massive draw for these games and many others, and often the most important deciding factor in whether I'm willing to give my time to a game, in being able to inhabit an avatar that I find in some way compelling, and influencing whether the play in question is sustainable. It can often make me invested in material I care little for otherwise, in the most extreme cases. Share as little or as much as you'd like about your chosen creations here, or discuss the particulars of any given game's creation suite as they demand. Here are a few of mine to start off with:

Demon's Souls

Dark Souls II

Dark Souls III

Conan Exiles

That's all you're getting of this character because they are extremely naked.

Final Fantasy XIV

Mass Effect

Mass Effect: Andromeda

Monster Hunter: World

Fashion disasters and everything inbetween welcome, so long as they're your own creations, put together with the toolsets provided, for games of any era and creative context.

Sir Knightbot
My original Demon's Souls and Dark Souls characters died with the console. But I have some ancient cell phone photos of them!

Here's one of mine from the PC version of Souls:

Most of my Souls characters wear sweet-ass helmets nearly 100% of the time, so I don't remember half of their faces. Like this guy:

BONUS: Pokemon Swoosh, I guess?

King of Games
God, the Assassin's Mask in Demon's Souls is great.

Dark Souls II

Dark Souls III

Dragon's Dogma

Mass Effect: Andromeda

Monster Hunter: World

And my goofy-ass Code Vein character, which I am very proud of.

Gonna start with the one I think might not count, but with Break Arts II's versatile lego-but-for-racing-mechs system, there's a lot of space for self-expression. There's a reason the game refers to you as an artist, not a racer. Here's my main team, Berserker Frame and DEEP HUNT.

Then we've got my No Man's Sky dude.

My obligatory FFXIV Lalafell Dark Knight

My FFXV Comrades character - went with a FF1 colors theme.

My Earth Defense Force Iron Rain character, a character I sadly did not play for long because Iron Rain is poorly optimized on PC.

My Black Desert Online character, the number one character creator that apparently is also a video game or something.

And my character that is a spoiler from a game that pretends it doesn't even have a character creator at all for like fifty hours
It's Warframe

Mechs totally count! Even for the limited way visual customizability manifested (just paint options, I think), it was a big part of the appeal of having a Skell in something like Xenoblade Chronicles X, in ways that made someone like me who doesn't really give a hoot about them in the abstract compelled to interact with the concept. That game also had some wonderful casual wear options for the humanoid characters, so put together it was a lowkey delight of personalization.

Me and My Bestie
(He, him)
My animal friends are usually the stars of my photo shoots, but Animal Crossing: New Horizons lets you change your appearance at any time with a mirror and has a ton of clothing options even without getting into custom textures.

Here's a few of the forms I've taken in photo shoots.

Soma Cruz (Not 1:1, this is from a Champ Presents Dracula shoot so that's why the eyes and mouth are different)

Roald (Did this shortly after he moved out in October)

Ruby (Did this after the Roald shoot, she was a friend who moved way back in May)

Elmyra Duff

Rouge the Bat

First thing I ask myself is: do I want this character to represent me, or do I want this character to make the experience more interesting by being cool and attractive (or unique in some other way)? Most of the time I choose the second option.

My way, soon
It's too bad Galadrome left because Strongio (his Dark Souls II character) was the greatest.

The Shogun of Harlem
All character gens are equal. I pick a default that doesn't look too bad, mess with hair options, and then we're ready!! I know a lot of people are way into it and spend hours on it but I'm like "fuck it I'll get a hat that covers their face anyway" and off we go.

...that said, I have way too many glamour options for FFXIV...

This started as an attempt to recreate Kamen Rider Kuuga's Blue form, since it's the one that has a weapon actually in SC6, but then I just went off the rails and ended up with this
