And we've got the final matches of this round.

Match 17:
We have Purple's pick of Mary Elizabeth McGlynn and Akira Yamaoka covering Always on My Mind (which was written by Wayne Carson, Johnny Christopher and Mark James*) going up against my pick of Nirvana's cover of David Bowie's The Man Who Sold the World (as featured on MTV Unplugged).

*Always on My Mind was first recorded by Brenda Lee and first released by Gwen McCrae with Lee's version coming out a few months later. It has been covered by many artists. The McGlynn & Yamaoka version was used in the video game Silent Hill: Shattered Memories.

Always on My Mind

CoVersus

The Man Who Sold the World

Match 18:
And we close out the round with "Weird Al" Yankovic covering (but not parodying) Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody as Bohemian Polka (nominated by SpoonyBard). And it's going up against a pick which gives us the situation of a previous cover artist, Disturbed, now becoming the covered artist as Richard Cheese (& Lounge Against The Machine) cover Down with the Sickness (nominated by Violentvixen).

Bohemian Polka (née Rhapsody)

CoVersus

Down with the Sickness

@SpoonyBard @Violentvixen @Purple

Voting will be open for 24 hours.

And oof, my sleep schedule has just been perfectly out of sink for most of this voting.

Still, that first matchup especially was a tough one. Some great trip-hop vibes from Yamaoka and McGlynn.

ETA: Do you have any songs that you thought about nominating in this dome, but didn’t quite make the cut? I, for one, would love to hear them. Torzelbaum made a great thread for songs that had to be left out of Thunderdomes, and it deserves more love!

So for Bohemian Poka there was something interesting I came across while doing my checks of all of the entrants.

Polka originated in nineteenth-century Bohemia (which is now part of the Czech Republic). Now you might think that bohemian is directly related but it isn't:

"The term bohemianism emerged in France in the early 19th century out of perceived similarities between the urban Bohemians and the Romani people; La bohème was a common term for the Romani people of France, who were thought to have reached France in the 15th century via Bohemia (the western part of modern Czech Republic). Bohemianism and its adjective bohemian in this specific context are not connected to the native inhabitants of the historical region of Bohemia (the Czechs)." (This isn't the first time this has happened to the Romani people.)

Thanks for posting that thread. I had forgotten all about it.
