Hello one and all. Welcome to the Coversdome where the cover songs we picked will face off until only one remains.

Since we don't have a balanced bracket we need to start with a couple of play-in matches. So without further ado, here they are.

Match 1:
First we have the Johnny Unusual pick of Johnny Cash's cover of I See a Darkness (originally by Bonnie "Prince" Billy). It's up against Kirin's pick of William Shatner & Joe Jackson's cover of Common People (originally by Pulp)

I See a Darkness

CoVersus

Common People

Match 2:
Next up is my pick of The Jimi Hendrix Experience's cover of All Along The Watchtower (originally by Bob Dylan). It's facing off against Purple's pick of the Naked Eyes cover of Always Something There to Remind Me (originally by Burt Bacharach, Hal David, and Dionne Warwick)

All Along The Watchtower

This first match is top to bottom bangers. Gotta stick with the Shat cover that I unironically love though.

Starting the next round a little early. Previous round is still open and Match 1 is currently tied so please vote if you haven't done so already. (I'm still trying to decide on that one.)

Since that match is currently undecided I will be passing over the first match of the next round for now.

Match 3:

First up we have Johnny Unusual back again with his pick of Black Sabbath's seminal song Iron Man as covered by The Cardigans. It's up against WildcatJF's pick of Pearl Jam's cover of the Wayne Cochran song Last Kiss.

Iron Man

Last Kiss

Match 4:
Next up we have Exposition Owl's pick of La Lupe's cover of Fever as originally popularized by Peggy Lee*. It is up against my pick of DHT's cover of Roxette's Listen to your Heart.

Listen to your Heart

Voting will be open for 24 hours.

*While Peggy Lee's version is the main inspiration for La Lupe's version it is not the original version of the song. The song was originally performed by Little Willie John and was written by Eddie Cooley and Otis Blackwell AKA John Davenport.

I'm calling some of the ongoing/pending matches. All Along The Watchtower and Fever are moving on. Common People wins a coin flip and is moving on.

Iron Man and Last Kiss are currently tied.

I love all four of these for completely different reasons.

I've never heard Aretha Franklin's cover of Bridge over Troubled Water but wow that completely redoes the song. Beautiful.

I didn't know Soft Cell's Tainted Love was a cover but I've always loved the 80s instrumentation in this song. I looked up the original and I really like how they reinterpreted it for this version so I'm going with that.

Comedic usage of My Way is just a fantastic trope so this did make me laugh.

But Angelique Kidjo's reinterpretation of Remain in Light is phenomenal so I have to go with that. This track and Once In A Lifetime are the two standouts I think but I highly recommend checking the whole album out if you can.

And for todays - I originally had both the first two on my list but went with Aretha when I ran out of space, so… Bridge over the Punches

While setting up the Dome I did some research on the entries to verify the original artist and the story of My Way is quite interesting. I'm sharing it here as an aside.

In 1967 a song was written in France called "Comme d'habitude" (which translates to As Usual). Singer and Songwriter Paul Anka heard the song and acquired the rights to it. Upon hearing that Frank Sinatra was thinking of quitting the music business, Paul wrote new lyrics for the song specifically for Frank. The result, My Way, became Sinatra's signature song and he enjoyed a long and storied career beyond it's release.

And sometime before this in Japan the manga and anime industries became influenced by their western counterparts during the allied occupation after World War 2. They both grew to become incredibly popular around the world and became engrained in western pop culture. And with the rise of the Internet and the increasing capabilities of personal computers fans were able to re-dub animes which lead to the creation of Dragon Ball Z Abridged by Curtis Arnott and his partners on Team Four Star.

And so with this cover we have a French song reworked for an American singer that is now being sung by a Canadian voice actor as a fan re-interpretation of a character from Japanese media. That is a hell of a trip.

Match 7:
The first match of this set includes my mystery pick. Why did I keep it a mystery? Because surprises can be fun. And also because this song is so singularly associated with the original singer that it might seem impossible for anyone to do it any sort of justice while covering it. But I think this cover artist, Mustered Courage, figured out a way to do that for Seal's Kiss from a Rose. It's facing off with Johnny's pick of Boney M.'s cover of Sunny (originally by Bobby Hebb).

Match 8:
Next up is Jimmy Eat World's cover of Firestarter, orginally by The Prodigy and nominated by WildcatJF. It is going up against SpoonyBard's pick of a-ha's Take On Me as covered by 8 Bit Universe.
