Capsize the Vote! The Popularity Contest General and Nomination Thread

Johnny Unusual

(He/Him)
Hey, I just thought I'd make a thread for the popularity contest. Partially because I'm going to do the archive thread in the near future. I am mentioning it here because I plan on making it a locked thread as the first post will be the masterlist of contests and subsequent posts will contain the masterlist of winners in individual votes, so you can look up past winners without looking at the threads if you want that info. I will also spoiler pop them in case you don't want to be spoiled and each entry will have a link to the original post. That's my plan, anyway. Does that sound good?

BTW, I really want to thank Conchobar for creating the original archive. He was worried that I might have been upset by his unilateral decision but frankly I'm just glad people like the countdowns and want to do something like that.

So uh... those links are all gonna have to be re-written when the old board swaps to its archive location, aren't they?

And actually, it's worse than that; my understanding from Mogri is that direct links to posts (rather than whole threads) may not work at all in the archive (definitely not with their old sytax at any rate), which is why I never finished updating my Mecha Top50 with individual winner links.

And speaking of that, when you get to it, I also never updated the winner list in the second post of Mecha because it had already been archived and the edits would be lost, but the full winner list is posted near the end of the thread so you can at least get the winner names without paging through the whole thread again.

Well, at least I can link to the threads. I saw it on the board earlier but can't find where the archive. Anyone help me out here?

The archive doesn't have a home yet. You can find a link to the temp archive in the "Asking for help" thread in Talking about TT, but please don't post links to the temp archive.

OK, here's what I'm missing:

Monsters (Mostly)
Animated Films
Fantasy Novels
Snack Foods
JRPGs
Cartoons
Villains
16-Bit Games
Musical Numbers
Tabletop Games
Mario Characters
Video Game Soundtracks
Toys and Toylines
Fictional Settings
Dinosaurs
Numbers
Boss Fights
Zelda Characters
Simpsons Episodes
Robot Masters
Detectives
Mythical Creatures

If anyone can point me to the info or send it to me directly for those lists, please let me know.

I would say that a) I'm past #35 and b) I'm getting a little burned out, that starting the process for the next list would be a-OK by me :)

Sounds good to me. I would have done something sooner but the pace was going well so I didn't want to derail anything. OK, folk, for the next four days, submit your topics for the next list.

I used to have a whole... thing but I'll just keep it brief:

Most people probably know all this but in the event someone who hasn't tried it before wants to, I want to make sure that there's no sense of a barrier to entry/enjoyment. If you don't know what the Popularity Contest is, basically we come together to make a list based on a particular topic. For example, the top 50 fantasy novels or top 50 detectives. People who want to participate submit their personal top favourite 25 things in that topic and all the lists are taken and points tallied and a top 50 list is made from all of that. Its fun. But first, we need to decide on a topic AND a host. And that's where YOU come it.

People who want to host submit their topics. Here are the general rules.

1) So I don't miss your submission, please BOLD your suggestions.
2) Please no joke suggestions. At least, not in BOLD. People have some whimsical ideas for lists so I don't want people submitting a list and I put it up and then they are like "jk, stupid!"
3) If you give a BOLD suggestion, YOU must host. Granted, if something comes up you are free to pass the duty onto another but I just don't want people submitting lists under the assumption that SOMEONE will do it.
4) One submission for person please.
5) Don't insult or put down another person's suggestions. Discussing feasibility, concerns or issues with it are fine, but please don't just say "well, that's a stupid topic". At least one person thinks it isn't.
And please...

If you have any other questions or concerns or I just missed bungling something up, drop me a line.

The deadline is exactly 4 days from this post dropping. So look at the post time and imagine that same time but for Sunday evening. We will then do a four day vote. If you lose this time around, never hesitate to submit again. Its usually worth it if you can be patient.

Yes, that Russian author.

I have an idea, but I'm not going to be able to execute another list until at least March of next year, so I'm holding out this round!

Have you ever had an idea that you are sure would be very popular but that you personally aren't super interested in?

Just ask Kirin about that.

Since everyone else seems slow to react, I'll throw my hat in the ring. I'll probably get back the one I usually submit eventually, but I'm going to take a risk since the new list can begin in time for the Holidays with Top 50 Winter Holiday Music. Mostly I mean Christmas but I want to keep things open for other holidays like Hannukah. New Year's and secular songs that are just about Winter being great, like "Let It Snow"

Just ask Kirin about that.

Haha, beat me to it. How long was I submitting Mecha for, a year? Two? Anyway I’m gonna spend a few months contemplating what I might want to do next while recovering from that one, I think. 😁

Top 50 Office Supplies. I know you have opinions on stationery.

(Probably it would be hosted by a familiar office mascot. "It looks like you're trying to write a top 50 list...")

So what overall time frame are we looking at here?

Because here's what I have based on my understanding of the process but there are a lot of blanks I am not sure about.
Topic entry period: until 10/18
Topic voting period: from 10/19 until ?11/2
Time period for sending in individual lists: ?11/3 until ?
Top 50 list presentation begins: ?

I mean, the last two things will be dependent on what the hosts plan on doing. I have no say on that.

That said, the topic voting period (which I do have a say in) will actually be much shorter than two weeks. It will be four days. I find any longer than that doesn't yield much more change and within that time people have generally seen and voted on the topics they want to see. So yeah, usually I keep it four and four, because in internet time, that's actually a pretty long period.

So far we have
Top 50 Horror Films - Dracula
Top 50 Office Supplies - Mogri
Top 50 Sci-Fi Books - Positronic Brain
Top 50 Sidekicks - Adrenaline
Top 50 Winter Holiday Music - Johnny Unusual
