Oh, this was Q-Games! I never suspected the folks that made those decent PixelJunk games were responsible for this shit.

Help!

It's FAR from done I just haven't worked on it in forever because the lunch breaks where I used to churn out entries have been overtaken by other duties.

You can call it a hiatus if you want but now that I've been forcefully reminded of it I'm totally gonna try and update as fast as I can just to keep it out of on hiatus.

SCENE 3 PATH 4: ROLE MODEL
AKA: MISSILE ATTACK

Quote:
ROB: We are receiving an urgent message.
ROB: It is from Commissioner Beltino.
BELTINO: Fox! Please respond!
BELTINO: This is Commissioner Beltino Toad.
SLIPPY: Dad! You're OK!
SLIPPY: That's great news!
BELTINO: Oh! Is Slippy there, too? Hello, son!
SLIPPY: Hey! Of course I'm here!
FOX: Commissioner! I'm glad you are unhurt!
BELTINO: Get here as quickly as you can! I've got something important to tell you!
FOX: Roger that! We'll set a course too your location.
FOX: Take care, Commissioner!
BELTINO: OK! I'll be waiting for you.
SLIPPY: Wait there, Dad! I'll be there soon!
SLIPPY: But first, we need to do something about the enemies in this sector!
FOX: Let's get every last core!
FOX: ROB! Prep all ships for launch!
ROB: Consider it done.

Commissioner Beltino is in every way an archetype of the fatherhood ideal. A caring, smart and helpful (if somewhat goofy) individual full of fatherly wisdom, trying to find the balance between providing his son guidance, and allowing him to forge his own path. It's obvious that slippy loves his dad very much, to the point where much of his life is modeled after him.
Quote:
SLIPPY: They've made it all the way to the asteroid belt!
SLIPPY: I don't believe it!
FOX: This may be the most dangerous foe we've ever faced.
FALCO: Sorry for making ya wait, Foxie!
FOX: Late again, Falco?
FALCO: Yeah, yeah. I know. I'm behind schedule. But don't worry!
FALCO: I was equipping my Sky Claw with a Multi-lock!
FOX: Good flying, gents!
FALCO: What was that?!
Falco's Arrival heralds the coming of this mission's boss, the dreaded "Bio Brain". However, it is but a distraction, much like everything else in this war. Fox and team make short work of it.
Quote:
FALCO: Usually, I love every dogfight, but that one was unpleasant.
SLIPPY: The important thing is that we made it through.
FOX: All enemy contacts destroyed. Let's get back to the station!
The thing that sets Star Fox Command so far above other works of literature is how it manages to tells us so much from so little. For example, this small exchange not only gives us valuable insight into the characters of the 3 active members of Star Fox, but also elevates them into symbols, through which it delivers commentary on the world. Here, Falco Slippy and Fox represent different soldier archetypes. Falco is the glorious conqueror that "loves every dogfight". Slippy is the worried young man who just wants to make it out alive. Finally Fox is the machine. Brutish and Mechanical, accomplishing his mission and doing little else.

It should be noted that of these three characters, Slippy is the only one with a happy family.
Quote:
BELTINO: You made it! Aw, look! The whole gang's here!
SLIPPY: Are you OK, Dad?
BELTINO: I'm great, Son! Outta bed and full of beans!
BELTINO: But more importantly, I have come across some critical information.
FOX: What do you mean?
BELTINO: It's about those dastardly Anglars!
BELTINO: They're building a base on the floor of the Venom Sea!
SLIPPY: That's nuts! Everyone knows the Venom Sea is extremely acidic!
SLIPPY: Nothing can survive down there!
BELTINO: I'm sure you remember that villain Andross.
BELTINO: Well, I think he has something do to with this!
FOX: Andross?!
BELTINO: Andross deployed a new bioweapon on Venom.
BELTINO: He's used it to evolve himself and seize control of localized life-forms!
FOX: Wait, wait. You're saying this bioweapon contains Andross's DNA?
FOX: And that is causes living creatures to follow his orders?
FOX: That's bad news!
FOX: So what does that mean for us?
BELTINO: That's harder to say... but we know Andross is fiercely intelligent.
BELTINO: And when you combine that with his lust for power...
BELTINO: I think you're in for a fight like nothing you've faced before!
FOX: Why do we ALWAYS have to fight this loser?
FALCO: Yeah, yeah. Enough talk! Let's blow somethin' up!
FALCO: Fox, are you really gonna head to Venom with just two wingmen?
FALCO: Don't you need Krystal's help, too?
FOX: ...
FALCO: I heard a rumor that the Cornerian Air Force has itself a hot new pilot!
FALCO: And by hot, I don't just mean talented! Heh heh! ...Man, I'm hilarious!
SLIPPY: Yeah, so, Fox...
SLIPPY: Falco's a jerk, but he's right. You need to patch things up with Krystal.
BELTINO: I agree, Fox. Now, I don't need to know all the details...
BELTINO: But I know the future of Lylat is in your hands!
BELTINO: It's time to bury the hatchet and move on.
BELTINO: Isn't your job to bring out the best in your team?
BELTINO: Your WHOLE team?
Fox is quite obviously unhappy about the prospect of begging his ex to rejoin the team. Falco and Slippy are clearly hoping Fox and Krystal will get back together, both of them having grown sick of Fox's Endless moping, and wishing to return to the earlier days when the four of them could hang out and nobody had to pick sides. Beltino holds no such hopes or delusions, and cuts to the core of the issue with an outsider's clarity. It's a war. We need everybody we can get, regardless of personal history.

As such Fox does not get to decide if he wants to try to re-recruit Krystal. The decision is already made, and he will do what he must whether or not we, the readers, decide to accompany him.
Quote:
BELTINO: Okeydokey! Let's give Fox's Arwing an upgrade!
BELTINO: This'll really make those Anglars panic!
FOX: Thanks, Commissioner!
BELTINO: This is called a Multi-lock.
BELTINO: It lets you lock on to multiple enemies at once!
SLIPPY: You're the best, Pops! You think of everything!
BELTINO: Good luck out there!
FOX: Thank you!
Regardless of who we decide to go with, we are treated to a short scene of Beltino outfitting Fox's craft with new offensive capabilities, just as his son Slippy has done for Fox many times before. Like father, like son.

CHOOSE
GO MEET KRYSTAL
SAY GOODBYE TO FOX

SCENE 4 PATH 4: OLD DOG
AKA: HOLD FIRM KATINA

Quote:
ROB: The Katina base is under attack.
FALCO: I know that!
SLIPPY: I can't believe how many of them there are!
SLIPPY: I hope Fox is all right on his own.
ROB: I am receiving a message from the Cornerian Air Force.
BILL: Fox? This is Bill Grey of the Cornerian Air Force!
BILL: I take it you've come to help us out?
SLIPPY: Bill!
FALCO: I'm sorry, but Fox is out and about at the moment, Bill.
FALCO: But we'll be happy to provide you with some cover!
BILL: Falco! Slippy! Thanks for the offer, It's a real help!
FALCO: Let's go, Slippy!
SLIPPY: Roger that!

Bill Grey is one of Fox's oldest and best friends. They they've known each other since childhood, and went to the Cornerian Flight Academy together. Beyond their shared history, he's also helpful, loyal, a strong leader, and good-natured in general. He is 100% the friend Fox should be talking to in his post-breakup depression.

I bring all this up, because Bill only appears in two chapters of this story. And in both of those chapters, Fox is nowhere to be seen. Bill is only ever seen interacting with people he knows because of Fox. He helps them, and they help him, but at no point does Fox, the man Bill knows better than anyone, enter the equation.
Quote:
FALCO: Bill! I need you to take care of business over there, OK?
BILL: Leave it to me, pard!
SLIPPY: I'll tidy this sector up over here.
Falco and Slippy both have great respect for Bill, and jump right into helping him clear out the enemy forces on his home planet of Katina.
Quote:
SLIPPY: Phew! Good work guys! How'd everyone make out?
FALCO: Doin' fine over here!
BILL: I'm happy as a tick in a dog's ear!
Bill is a dog. Unfortunately there is not enough information on racial tensions in the Lylat System (if they exist at all) to judge whether his analogy would be found offensive or not. Slippy and Falco do not comment.
Quote:
BILL: Oh, I getcha!
BILL: Fox went to meet up with Krystal!
SLIPPY: How's she doing?
BILL: Well, shucks. How should I put this...?
BILL: The Krystal you knew has changed. A lot.
FALCO: What do you mean by that?
BILL: She's become a skilled pilot with an icy heart. A true killer, that one!
BILL: At least, that's what she wants everyone to think...
SLIPPY: Krystal? A killer?! No way! I don't believe it!
BILL: Now, I don't know all the details about what went down between her and Fox...
BILL: But is seems she was pretty shocked. Hurt, too.
FALCO: Fox, you idiot...
BILL: I heard that she started datin' someone else.
BILL: Fella's a part of the original Star Wolf team.
SLIPPY: Star Wolf?!
FALCO: Those dirty rats!
ROB: Alert. I am receiving a transmission from Fox.
ROB: He will meet us on Titania.
SLIPPY: I wonder if he managed to patch things up with Krystal?
FALCO: Yeah, well, there's one way to find out. Set a course for Titania!
FALCO: Catch you later, Bill.
BILL: Thanks again, Falco! Slippy!
BILL: Say hello to Fox from me!
As a longtime friend of Fox, it's notable that Bill seems to know more about Krystal's side of the story than he does Fox's. The information he chooses to divulge here implies that he would rather Fox stay far away from Krystal. Nothing about her since her leaving the team is anything Fox would approve of.

While he's clearly concerned about his friend, Bill is an active member of the Millitary, and cannot abandon his post. Slippy and Falco say their goodbyes and, leave to meet Fox on Titania, both privately wondering how on earth they're going to deal with their basketcase of a leader.

SCENE 5 PATH 4: BITTER TENSION
AKA: THE WORM

Quote:
FALCO: Krystal!
SLIPPY: Krystal! Hooray! You and Fox made up!
KRYSTAL: And what do you mean by that, Slipy Toad?
FOX: ...
KRYSTAL: You and your "Fox did this" and "Fox did that!"
KRYSTAL: You never get tired of talking about him, do you?
FALCO: Geez, Krystal! Give the little fella a break.
SLIPPY: T-that's so mean... Sniff...
Krystal makes no attempt to disguise her foul attitude about working with the team again, and immediately starts swinging for the fences. Her pot shot at Slippy serves no purpose other than to put everybody on edge. She won't be happy until nobody's happy.
Quote:
FOX: So, Krystal? About the secret of Titania?
FOX: If you know something, you need to tell us.
KRYSTAL: ...Fine.
KRYSTAL: A long time ago, Andross started developing a new machine.
KRYSTAL: This device would make Venom a beautiful planet that could support like.
FOX: Venom? Beautiful?
KRYSTAL: Andross was deemed to be a dangerous fanatic and banished from Venom.
KRYSTAL: He was condemned to a life of isolation and loneliness.
FOX: That lousy ape is nothing more than a crazed maniac!
KRYSTAL: You say that because he killed your father.
KRYSTAL: But at that time, he was Corneria's chief science officer.
KRYSTAL: He was also a close colleague of General Pepper.
KRYSTAL: But they were like oil and water. Their infighting was a precursor to war.
FOX: NO! That's a LIE! Andross ignored an order to halt his dangerous experiments!
FOX: He was banished as punishment!
KRYSTAL: His motives were pure, Fox! He just wanted to continue his research.
KRYSTAL: He never asked for money or kickbacks of any kind!
FOX: Yeah? Well if he's so pure, why did we end up going to war?!
KRYSTAL: ...
FALCO: Enough! We don't have time to blab about the past right now!
KRYSTAL: You're right, Falco. Let me continue.
KRYSTAL: After Andross fought you, he dedicated his remaining days to planet Venom.
KRYSTAL: He wanted to leave some sort of legacy. That's all.
FOX: And now that device is on Titania.
FOX: I'm sure he's hidden it somewhere people would never look.
KRYSTAL: Yes, that's it exactly.
KRYSTAL: I imagine that one of his bioweapons is guarding the device.
FOX: We're going to get that device. Krystal, you're coming, too!
KRYSTAL: ...Whatever.
According to the best sources available it's true that Andross did, at one point in his life work for the advancement of society. However, as time went on his experiments grew increasingly dangerous, unethical and even inhumane. When the government ordered him to stop, he blatantly ignored the command. At long last, one of his illegal experiments went wrong, resulting in a cataclysmic explosion that killed millions. That was the event for which he was exiled. He dedicated the remainder of his life to attempting full scale invasions of Lylat resulting in even more death and destruction. This went on until his big face-to-face confrontation with Fox, where he was finally killed.

I bring all this up to illustrate how completely ridiculous Krystal's stance in this argument actually is. At best it ignores the vast majority of his life in favor of a few minor accomplishments from his youth. At worst it's outright false, as Andross had no "remaining days" after his battle with Fox. Finally her bringing any of it up is completely unrelated to the task at hand: finding one of Andross's old inventions, so they can safely enter venom airspace. Krystal stood up for Andross here not out of some misguided belief he was was a good man, but because at the moment's she's onboard with anything that makes Fox unhappy, regardless of how poorly it reflects on her.
Quote:
SLIPPY: Hey, Krystal, how is the Cloud Runner treating you?
KRYSTAL: Um... fine, Slippy. Thanks.
FALCO: Kid, you and that ship belong together!
FOX: Stay focused! Here they come!
Please note that Krystal left the team some time ago, and had her own craft while working with Wolfpack. Slippy maintained and upgraded her Team Star Fox Craft while she was away on his own volition.
Quote:
ANDROSS: I am the ghost of Andross.
ANDROSS: I protect this base with my bioweapon!
FOX: An... Andross?
FALCO: A sand cloud is forming!
KRYSTAL: Something's coming!

For all his ambitions Andross died alone in a hole in the ground. The symbolism in this level's boss is all too obvious: The only one that cares about the dead are the worms that ate them.
Quote:
FALCO: Man, bioweapons give me the heebie-jeebies!
KRYSTAL: We got the device!
SLIPPY: That's great news!
FOX: Now we can enter the Venom Sea! Let's get back to base.
The worm's token resistance for its dead master falls quickly enough. There is Irony in its death: By destroying Andross's final creation, Team Star Fox is now free to fulfill Andross's Final dream. If anyone recognizes this, they keep ti to themselves.
Quote:
SLIPPY: Krystal? Are you still the Krystal we once knew?
KRYSTAL: ...
SLIPPY: I... I can't believe it's really you!
KRYSTAL: It's not me, Slippy. You're right. I'm a different person now.
SLIPPY: That's not true!
SLIPPY: You're the same Krystal as you've always been!
SLIPPY: Have you forgotten about Sauria?
SLIPPY: About how Fox rescued you? How he saved your life?
SLIPPY: And what about when you risked your life to fight the Aparoids?
KRYSTAL: Of course I remember! Don't be an idiot!
SLIPPY: ...Yeah, well, you could still try to be nicer to Fox.
SLIPPY: It's just a suggestion.
KRYSTAL: Forget it! He had his chance and he blew it!
SLIPPY: You know, the love of my life is on Aquas right now.
SLIPPY: I left her there...
SLIPPY: I knew it was wrong! I knew it! But I did it anyway.
SLIPPY: If you love someone, you have to be together. No matter how dangerous it is!
KRYSTAL: Oh, Slippy...
SLIPPY: Sniff... Oh, great! Now I'm gonna cry! Sniff...
SLIPPY: Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Bwaaaaaaaaaaaa!
KRYSTAL: ...
Do not speak to Slippy like he doesn't know your pain. He knows all too well.

SCENE 6 PATH 4: THE NEW STAGNATION
AKA: FOX AND KRYSTAL

Quote:
EMPEROR: Zazan?
ZAZAN: Yes, Your Excellency?
EMPEROR: ...They are coming.
ZAZAN: Do not concern yourself, Excellency!
ZAZAN: They cannot possibly make it this far.
ZAZAN: Unless, of course, they manage to find The Device.
EMPEROR: I feel both anger and fear. It is unusual.
EMPEROR: It has been so long since I felt these things... Fascinating.
EMPEROR: Prehaps our Creator's oldest enemy has come home at last.
EMPEROR: Don't get careless, Zazan! Everything depends on this.
ZAZAN: Yes, Your Excellency!

Zazan and The Anglar Emperor's conversation implies that their entire race was the creation of Andross. They are lifeforms designed to live in a terrible inhospitable sea. We don't know why Andross also designed a device to remove the sea's acidic properties. It's entirely possible Andross made them just to kill them. A sad, doomed existence.
Quote:
FOX: We're entering the Venom Sea now. Don't get careless on me!
FOX: Watch your ships for any sign of corrosion.
FOX: You see anything, I want you to head for the surface right away!
FALCO: I'm on it!
SLIPPY: Yessir!
KRYSTAL: And what should I do?
FOX: You've done your part. You can stay here or go back to Panther.
FOX: I don't care.
KRYSTAL: ...Tell me you didn't just say that.
SLIPPY: Fox! That was an awful thing to say!
FALCO: Slippy? That's not your concern. Worry about the guys trying to kill you.
KRYSTAL: I'm in. I don't care what you said. I'm going to join the attack run.
FOX: Fine.
ROB: I am pickking up multiple contacts. They are Anglar fighters.
FOX: Team Star Fox, attack!
Slippy is the sort of man who wants everybody to be happy, and is willing to do whatever is needed to accomplish that end. A fine personality trait to have, but in situations like this one, it would only make things worse.
Quote:
FOX: What is the level of acidity?
SLIPPY: Only minimal traces remain. It's amazing!
FALCO: Now all we have to do is fight! Who wants a piece of Falco?
KRYSTAL: It's the birth of a new Venom...
EMPEROR: The Venom Sea neutralized... Our forces in disarray...
EMPEROR: I shall not let this happen!
FOX: Anglar! Welcome to the last day of your empire!
EMPEROR: Silence, fool! All will bend their knee to me!
The Anglar dies the same way he was created, as an afterthought. A side effect of a much larger battle. It is not the incredible last stand of a king who would have been a god. He's just a casualty.
Quote:
FOX: It's finally over.
FALCO: Man, what a jerk! I mean, seriously.
KRYSTAL: We really did it...
SLIPPY: YAY! No more fighting!
SLIPPY: We did it!
FALCO: Yeah, that wasn't so tough. Buncha no-good pilots!
FOX: It was thanks to you guys that we pulled through!
SLIPPY: This is the best team I've ever been a part of, Fox! You too, right? ...Right?
FOX: Um...
KRYSTAL: ...Yes?
FOX: Krystal...
KRYSTAL: What?
FOX: We wouldn't have pulled this off without you. ...Thank you.
KRYSTAL: Whatever.
FALCO: Yeah, thanks. You've got serious skills, you know that?
SLIPPY: Yaaaaaaaaay Krystal!
KRYSTAL: I... I...
FOX: Krystal, please find a way to forgive me! I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!
KRYSTAL: Forgive you? Forgive you?! That's funny. I mean, that is simply hilarious.
KRYSTAL: You treat me like dirt and I just forgive you? Is that it? ...Sniff... Jerk...
FOX: So... you won't come back to the team?
SLIPPY: C'mon, Krystal! You gotta come back!
FALCO: Yeah, don't worry abut this furry idiot. Just get your tail back here.
FOX: We'll always be together. I promise.
KRYSTAL: Ah, F-Fox, you... I... sniff... ...I'm an idiot. I can't believe I'm actually going to do it...
KRYSTAL: Falco? Slippy? Thank you.
SLIPPY: Yay! This is AWESOME!
SLIPPY: The Anglars are history, and Krystal is back with the team!
SLIPPY: Now we just have to file our report with Peppy! We should go find him!
FALCO: Don't pretend, frog. You just want to go see your new squeeze!
SLIPPY: Tee hee hee! You've discovered my ruse!
FOX: Ruse or no, we're plotting a course for Aquas.
ROB: Great Fox prepped and ready for launch.
FOX: Let's go!
Finally, the happy ending this story deserved! With the Anglars defeated, Lylat saved, and Krystal back on the team, our heroes set a course for Aquas so slippy can finally introduce everybody to his blushing bride-to-be. It was a rough trip, but we're finally in the clear. Right?

END

ENDING PATH 4: NEW DARK AGE
Quote:
Once again, Fox and his friends have saved the Lylat system. But this time, something is different. Fox has finally realized the true value of friendship... and love. Fox and his friends head for Aquas in order to meet Amanda, Slippy's fiancee.

Amanda has come to a life-changing decision. She is going to join team Star Fox and fly alongside her love... With the support of her new colleagues, she will soar across the galaxy and get into all manner of adventures along the way!

Thanks to team Star Fox, Venom has changed. The oceans are warm and life-bearing, and the climate mild. Dash, grandson of Andross and Venom's new steward, strives to build a brave new empire on Venom, with himself at its pinnacle.
Wrong. Fox's breakdown-induced pleas for Krystal to come back, is a rash and poorly thought out choice, as is her relenting to his begging. The reformed Team Star Fox consists of three people who genuinely want to be there there, and two people desperately pretending that they've managed to bury the past. While the addition of Amanda, will provide some stability, Star Fox is as doomed as it ever was. Eventually Amanda, Slippy and Falco will all need to move on with their lives, leaving Fox, Krystal, and the elephant in the room that is the tension and distrust between the two.

As the whole campaign was but a mirror of the Squadron's problems, so the fate of the Lylat system mirrors their resolution. Dash wishes to build venom as Fox wishes to build his organization. And like Fox and his grandfather before him, it seems doomed to fail.

IT DIDN'T HAVE TO GO THIS WAY...

SCENE 4 PATH 5: THIRD WHEELS
AKA: KRYSTAL

Quote:
ROB: The Katina base is under attack and returning fire!
FOX: Krystal! Can you hear me? It's me, Fox!
KRYSTAL: ...
FOX: I've come to get you!
FOX: I want you to rejoin the team!
KRYSTAL: ...
ROB: Prepped and ready for launch.
FOX: Krystal! I'm coming to cover you!
KRYSTAL: Save it, loser! I don't need your help!
FOX: ...Krystal?
PANTHER: Ha ha ha! Never get cover from a Fox... when you can run to a panther! Grawl!
FOX: Panther!
KRYSTAL: You knew, didn't you, Fox?
KRYSTAL: You should go home now!

Panther Caruso of Wolfpack is sort of guy who's cup runneth over with fire and passion. While it's easy to write off his grandstanding as the empty words of a wannabe Casanova, he has never in his life cheated or fooled around, and takes his relationship with Krystal as seriously as such a commitment requires. He wears his heart on his sleeve, and he doesn't care who sees it.

Also notable is Fox and Krystal's reactions to eachother. Fox's shock at the fact that Krystal has found someone else betrays his belief that she wouldn't, or perhaps shouldn't be able to move on when he couldn't. Krystal on the other hand immediately assumes that Fox knew everything about her new life, and was here for no other reason than to ruin her day. The resentment she holds towards Fox outweighs her ability to recognize that there are valid reasons for his presence, leaving her to assume he's only here for some sort of pathetic revenge.
Quote:
LEON: Hssss! Yeah, run on home! We've got it covered here!
FOX: Leon!
LEON: That's right! There's a lot of Anglars to smash, and I don't want to share!
LEON: You have no role to play in this story!
ROB: Shall we move on?
FOX: ...Yes. Let's go.

Leon Powalski, an original member of Wolfpack, enjoys flying ships and using them to blow up other ships. His life is dedicated to the straightforward pursuit of doing that as much as possible. He is simple and uncomplicated while still somehow managing to be totally fucked up.
Quote:
PANTHER: Krystal! Take care, my darling space rose!
KRYSTAL: Um... yeah. I'll do that.
FOX: Krystal...
LEON: Mind your business, Fox! Go find some other girl to pester!
PANTHER: Krystal, my sweet. Are you well? Panther was worried!
KRYSTAL: I'm fine, Panther. Thanks.
LEON: Fox? You still there?
FOX: Yeah. Yeah, I'm here.
We've all been at that one party where someone's ex turned up, and wouldn't leave their former squeeze alone. Panther remains oblivious to the whole thing, that's just how he always acts. Krystal, is less than receptive because she's busy being mortified by Fox's desperate grabs for attention. Leon, in an odd twist from his usual roll of "the crazy one" spends the entire time subtly keeping Fox in check and making sure nobody loses their shit.

Star Fox Command has turned love into a literal battlefield, complete with a wingman that pilots a fighter and flies in formation.
Quote:
KRYSTAL: It looks like you guys are heading for Venom.
KRYSTAL: How will you survive those acidic oceans?
FOX: We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. ...I suppose.
KRYSTAL: Ha! I never thought I'd see the day!
KRYSTAL: The great Fox McCloud at a loss for ideas!
FOX: ...
KRYSTAL: I guess you thought that you could do everything by yourself, right?
FOX: That's not true! That's why I came to find you...
FOX: I wanted to ask for your help.
KRYSTAL: The Krystal you once knew is gone.
KRYSTAL: She is no longer a part of your world!
FOX: Krystal, I was a fool! A selfish, rude, arrogant fool. Please come back!
KRYSTAL: Well... if you apologize to me. In front of everyone.
KRYSTAL: Then maybe I'll think about it. Maybe
FOX: ...
PANTHER: Krystal, don't let this rogue change your mind! Let's get out of here!
FOX: ...I'm... sorry...
KRYSTAL: What was that? I couldn't quite hear you.
FOX: I'm sorry, Krystal! I'm so sorry!
LEON: Oh, I'm so sorry! Boo hoo! Whhhhkkkksssshhhh! Whhhhkkkksssshhhh!
FOX: ...I'm truly sorry. Please... Please come with me. I need you with me.
KRYSTAL: ...
PANTHER: This is absurd! Krystal, tell this loser where to stuff his Arwing and let's go!
KRYSTAL: ...
Once the battle is over, Fox loses his cool, and falls into the classic terrible ex strategy of begging for forgiveness and saying whatever seems like something their ex might want to hear. Krystal to her credit, was gunning for this reaction since he showed up hitting him with one cutting comment after another and delighting in his misery. Their pretensions of stoicism or of moving on have completely fallen aside, and it is in this fragile state that Krystal must decide what she does next: Seek something resembling closure, or continue to tell herself she doesn't need any.

Meanwhile Leon's hollering "Whhhhkkkksssshhhh!" or some shit. I dunno what the fuck's up with that.

SCENE 5 PATH 5: WOLFPACK
AKA: STAR WOLF RETURNS

Quote:
ROB: I have picked up a contact on the radar. It is heading toward us.
KRYSTAL: It's OK! Give them permission to land!
PANTHER: By my gorgeous face! It seems that Wolf has made it after all!
KRYSTAL: And he's managed to get his paws on the neutralizing device!
WOLF: Sorry to keep you all waiting!
PANTHER: We were getting worried. So, did you get it?
WOLF: Of course I did! Sheesh! It's me, remember?
LEON: Whaaa ha ha haaaa! Finally, the world will call US heroes!
LEON: I'm tired of being saddled with a horrible rep! I want flowers! And a parade!
WOLF: Um... yeah, all right, Leon. We'll look into it. Hey! You! Robot guy!
ROB: Whrrrmm? Do you mean me?
WOLF: Fire this device into the Venom Sea Immediately!
ROB: Affirmative.

After spending so much time watching Team Star Fox, and the myriad reasons why it can no longer function, the game gives us an opportunity to see Wolf O'Donnell in his element: as the the leader of Wolfpack. Before Krystal joined, his team consisted of a borderline psychotic and a foppish narcissist, a seeming recipe for disaster. In spite of this, they work well together, and suffer from none of the interpersonal issues or drama that endlessly plagues Team Star Fox. The contrast is obvious: Wolf O'Donnell has managed to take dysfunctional people and turn them into a functional team, something Fox is wholly incapable of.
Quote:
PANTHER: My darling Krystal... there is something that Panther must know!
PANTHER: This Fox. You still have feelings for him, no? Tell Panther! He can bear it!
KRYSTAL: Sigh...
KRYSTAL: No, Panther. I'm done with him. You are my chosen now.
LEON: Whaaaa ha ha ha! True love! She's got you whipped now, Panther old boy!
WOLF: Enough! This is no time for romance. We're professionals!
WOLF: C'mon, you lot! Get to your ships and let's go!
This short exchanges demonstrates why Wolfpack can survive when Star Fox cannot. Panther sees a problem with his current relationship and addresses it immediately, prepared to face whatever the results might be. Leon laughs at the whole scenario, refusing to be affected by someone else's issues. Finally Wolf takes control of the situation with an outsider's clarity, making sure that his squadmate's relationship issues do not affect the task at hand.
Quote:
WOLF: Well, I'll be. The Venom Sea has been neutralized.
WOLF: All right, you lot! Don't drop your guard for an instant!
LEON: Wheee hee hee! Things are gonna get fun now! Let's burn stuff!
PANTHER: Let's make our move!
KRYSTAL: Get in formation. Let's take 'em out and leave this place alive.
EMPEROR: You little band did well to track us this far.
EMPEROR: Perhaps the dog can smell a scent other then his own fear,
WOLF: Shut it, fishy!
LEON: I've seen ugly before, but you could peel the paint off an outhouse!
EMPEROR: These insults are beneath me. Let us finish this. Now!

No matter what choices are made by the characters of this story, the fate of the Anglar Emperor is always the same. An inglorious death.
Quote:
WOLF: Great job, team!
LEON: He was a stubborn foe... But I'm CRAZY!! Son I won.
PANTHER: Well done, Krystal.
KRYSTAL: I'm just glad it's over.
Leon's logic is, as always, bulletproof.
Quote:
LEON: Whaaaa ha ha haaaaa! We did it!
LEON: Star Wolf has taken on the world and emerged triumphant!
PANTHER: Ah, Wolf! Now we can stride large upon this world with our heads held high!
WOLF: It's true that we came out on top, but...
WOLF: ...Why don't I feel better about it?
KRYSTAL: It's because we had to cheat Star Fox to do it.
LEON: Look, a win is a win! No one cares about cheating!
LEON: Lylat is safe, and a bunch of bad guys are dead!
LEON: And Star Wolf is the reason! No one else!
PANTHER: We are not some fussy military unit. We are a team!
PANTHER: No one can complain about how we finished the job.
LEON: I don't like this, Wolf. I don't like your attitude!
LEON: I think you're getting too close to Fox McCloud!
WOLF: No way! Not in a million years!
LEON: Bah! Enough of this! Let's get back to Corneria.
LEON: We're going to shed this fugitive label once and for all!
PANTHER: Then we can walk down the streets in the light of day like any other citizen!
KRYSTAL: ...O-oh! Right! Right.
PANTHER: Something bothering you?
KRYSTAL: No, no! I'm OK! I'm part of Star Wolf and proud of it!
WOLF: Gyaa ha ha! I can't wait to see the look on that Cornerian general's face!
WOLF: It's gonna be priceless!
ROB: I shall set a course for Corneria.
ROB: Engaging now.
Wolf is not completely without honor and recognizes that for him to enjoy this victory, Team Star Fox had to be left behind. He doesn't let it bother him for long though. His team took on this undertaking simply so they could leave the past behind, and with their mission finally accomplished, none of them have any time for what came before.

Well, almost none of them.

END

ENDING PATH 5: AN UNFORGIVING PLACE
Quote:
Star Wolf rises! Across Lylat, people talk of Wolf O'Donnell and his courageous crew. But they are less kind to Krystal, feeling that she was wrong to abandon Star Fox. But she ignores the talk and proceeds with her new life as a member of Star Wolf.

Eventually, the slings and arrows of the populace are too much to bear. They begin to hiss as she walks by, and name her traitor to her face. She is alone... and hated. She pulls away from Star Wolf and tries to find meaning in this new, cruel world.

Haunted by her past, Krystal abandons her life and flees to a distant galaxy. Changing her name to Kursed, she survives by collecting bounties on the worst scum in the galaxy. Years later, she runs into Fox during a job on planet Kew... He does not recognize her.
In a cruel twist of fate, Krystal alone is unable to escape her past life and enjoy her new future. It seems odd that the public would mark her as the villian of the whole affair, as the other members of her new team all have long-standing criminal records.

If you will allow me a moment of speculation, I might posit that it is not the hatered of the public that drove Krystal to become Kursed, but Krystal herself. Wracked with self-loathing and guilt, and having no one to blame for her misery, she projected her self-loathing onto the public, convincing herself that they were the ones who unjustly hated her to avoid the fact that her problems were purely internal. Having decided upon an appropriate scapegoat, she withdrew from society in an attempt to flee from issues that could not possibly be outrun.

This is all conjecture, of course. It's entirely possible that I'm mistaken and the public really had made life in the lylat system completely intolerable.

Could you deal with such scorn?

Could anyone?

IT COULD HAVE GONE SO MUCH BETTER...

SCENE 2 PATH 6: PRODIGAL DAUGHTER
AKA: FOG OF WAR

Quote:
FOX: ROB! Have you managed to locate Lucy?
ROB: She will be in one of the nearby cities.
FOX: Let's just hope she's OK.
FOX: Last I heard, she was teaching astrophysics.
SLIPPY: Really? Well, I'll be!
SLIPPY: That doesn't sound like the Lucy I knew!
FOX: She was a real tomboy! Always wanted to become a pilot.
FOX: But I guess she became a teacher instead.
SLIPPY: Wasn't she good friends with Krystal?
SLIPPY: She might know how to track her down.
FOX: We're done talking about that, Slippy.
SLIPPY: ...Sorry.
FOX: OK! Let's go and get 'em!
Star Fox Command is a story filled with realistically flawed characters, and Slippy is no exception. His intentions are good, he only wants Fox and Krystal to be happy once again. That said, the only way he can think to accomplish this is for the two of them to re-enter an unhealthy relationship. It's a conclusion reached by a combination of personal bias and naivety. Being with Amanda makes him happy, so why shouldn't Fox and Krystal have that same happiness?
Quote:
WOLF: Fox... It's been a long time...
FOX: Wolf?!
WOLF: You lookin' to collect the bounty on our heads?
FOX: No, of course not!
WOLF: Bah! Arguing makes me cranky. Let's fight!

Wolf O'Donnell is less about thinking and more about doing. Logically, he and his team should have gone out of their way to put as much distance between themselves and Team Star Fox the second they realized they were there, considering the are bounties on their heads and the history the teams share. Instead he boldly announced their presence and charged headlong into battle, like the consummate warrior soul he is. Alas, this is currently Fox's story. Wolf's defeat is inevitable.
Quote:
WOLF: Grrragh! You got the better of me there!
PANTHER: Panther can't believe you defeated him! Will you now turn us in?
FOX: I've got bigger fish to fry today, guys. See ya around.
SLIPPY: Yeah! See ya!
WOLF: I hate that frog...
SLIPPY: Those guys never learn, do they?
FOX: Yeah, they're good pilots and all, but...
LUCY: Whoa! That was a close one!
FOX: Lucy! You made it! How are you feeling?
LUCY: Yeah, yeah, I'm fine. Look, my message made it to my Dad, right?
FOX: Umm...not exactly.
FOX: We just happened to intercept your message.
LUCY: Oh... I see.
SLIPPY: Don't worry. Peppy can't be beaten so easily.
LUCY: You...you're right. I'm sure he's fine!
FOX: Yeah, I wouldn't worry.
LUCY: Hey, Fox! Listen to this!
LUCY: I found out who's leading the invasion of Fichina!
LUCY: It's that jerk Oikonny!
FOX: Did you say Oikonny?!
SLIPPY: He's a nasty piece of work.
LUCY: They're using these huge weapons as part of their strategy! It's awful!
FOX: We can't let this continue.
SLIPPY: Fox? I have a thought.
SLIPPY: I think we need more information about the enemy.
FOX: I'm with you. It's foolish for us to stumble from one fight to another.
SLIPPY: You know my dad's at the asteroid station, right?
SLIPPY: It's possible he may know something that can help.
FOX: OK. So where do we go from here?

Lucy Hare is Peppy's Hare's only daughter. It's common knowledge that she always wanted to be a pilot, and she understand the mechanics of flight so well that she was able to build her own custom fighter. She also has a great deal of knowledge about the ongoing conflict, including the enemy's strategy and the identity of their leader. This all makes it very odd that in spite of all this, she only works in education, and has yet to contribute to the war effort in any way.

Worry not, dear reader, there are explanations to those oddities. On certain paths, we might come across them.

SCENE 3 PATH 6: SHACKLES OF LEGACY
AKA: OIKONNY STRIKES BACK

Quote:
ROB: We are receiving a message from the enemy.
OIKONNY: Can you hear me, Star Fox?
FOX: Oikonny! I can't believe you're still alive!
OIKONNY: Ha ha I knew you'd show up eventually!
OIKONNY: I've been waiting for a long time to get my revenge!
FOX: This is just like you Oikonny.
FOX: You're a pawn of the Anglar forces. A pawn and a coward!
OIKONNY: Shut it! The Anglar Emperor himself has raved about my skills!
OIKONNY: He tracked me down and personally asked me to join their fight!
FOX: Bad call on his part! Don't move, Oikonny, because I'm coming for you!

Andrew Oikonny, nephew of the warlord Andross, is practically a case study in ambitious failures. He was kicked out of Wolfpack, and his attempt to invade Lylat with the remnants of Andross's fleet were brushed aside without a second though. He now acts as one of the Anglar Forces many minor commanders, ignorable and disposable.

Also note, Andrew is the only characters in the story to go by his last name instead of his first. Instead of being recognized as an individual, he is only known only because of his family.
Quote:
LUCY: Wait! I'm coming with you!
SLIPPY: No way, Lucy! It's too dangerous!
LUCY: Don't worry, I won't slow you down!
LUCY: Please let me come with you, Mr. McCloud! Please!
FOX: Um, I don't know...
LUCY: If it gets even a little bit dangerous, I'll race out of there! Please?
FOX: All right, Lucy, come on!
The area is an active combat zone, far more than just "a little bit dangerous". Lucy has no intention of leaving, regardless of Fox's opinions on the matter. Fox does not put up much resistance to the idea, which is unusual considering how his supposed concern for Krystal's safety resulted in her being ejected from Star Fox. Then again, dangerous combat missions were far from the only issue that faced Fox and Krystal.
Quote:
OIKONNY: I'll show you why they call the Death Crab
OIKONNY: the most feared of all the weapons in the Anglar arsenal!
FOX: Finally made it out, Oikonny?
Of all the foregone conclusions in this tale, the outcome of Oikonny vs Fox, Slippy & Lucy is one of the most obvious.
Quote:
OIKONNY: GYAAA! I waited so long for this, and you still beat me!
FOX: We can do this as often as you want...you're still gonna lose!
SLIPPY: Yeah, behave yourself!
LUCY: Hopefully this will restore peace to Fichina.
FOX: Let's hope this makes Fichina a safe place!
FOX: At least for now...
SLIPPY: Lucy can really fight! I'm surprised.
LUCY: I may look all sweet, but I'm still General Peppy's daughter! So there!
FOX: Ha! You're definitely his daughter.
Lucy is an absolute powerhouse in combat and defeats Oikonny quite easily. That said, instead of declaring the victory for her own, attributes it to her Father, Peppy Hare. Bearing that in mind, we can see that both Lucy and Oikonny personify the issues of being trapped the shadow of their family's legacy. Oikonny projects his family history onto himself and assumes that he's destined for greatness. As a result he habitually takes on far more than he can handle and inevitably ends in failure. Lucy on the other hand, fears she'll never live up to her family's accomplishments, and thus credits whatever success she has not to her skills as an individual, but to the fact that she's "General Peppy's daughter". They are both trapped by their forefathers in profoundly different ways.
Quote:
LUCY: So, Fox, let's talk about Krystal. You really screwed that one up!
FOX: Um...
SLIPPY: Oh, by the way, Fox... Lucy and Krystal got to be pretty good friends.
SLIPPY: Maybe I should have warned you...
LUCY: Yes, Papa thinks of her as a second daughter.
FOX: Is that so?
LUCY: She's been very sad and lonely since you two split up.
LUCY: Don't you want to try and find her?
FOX: I had to ask her to leave the team.
FOX: As long as Krystal was by my side, I knew she would always be in danger!
LUCY: But you still liked each other, right?
LUCY: And you still worked well together, right?
LUCY: And you were still in love with her, right?
FOX: I...I can't deny any of that.
LUCY: So you decided the team was more important than her?!
SLIPPY: Lucy! Calm down! That's uncalled for!
FOX: No, it's OK, Slippy.
FOX: She's right. On all counts.
LUCY: Sorry. Perhaps I said too much. It's not my place.
FOX: No, don't apologize.
Even Slippy, who as discussed earlier, wants very much for Krystal and Fox to get back together, thought that was a bit much. Fox was wrong to break up with her using concern for her safety as a false pretense, but what's done is done, and can't be taken back.
Quote:
LUCY: Well, anyway, I'm going to head to Corneria.
LUCY: I have to check in on my Papa.
FOX: All right. Be careful.
FOX: If anything happens, contact us right away.
LUCY: I'll make sure to fill him in on all your fun adventures.
SLIPPY: Hey, Fox? Can I ask a favor?
SLIPPY: Can we...maybe...stop at Aquas on the way?
FOX: Why would you want to go there?
SLIPPY: Well...y'see...my fiancee is kinda on Aquas...
FOX: ...A fiancee?! Holy cow, Slippy, I didn't know that! She's on Aquas, huh?
ROB: Alert! Alert!
ROB: Enemy forces are invading the sunken city on Aquas.
SLIPPY: What?! That's horrible! Oh, my poor Amanda!
FOX: ROB, send a message to Falco!
FOX: Tell him to make for Aquas as fast as possible!
ROB: Roger.
Fox and Slippy will head to Aquas, and Lucy will continue to search for her father. The choice presented to us, the readers, is not really a choice at all. We are simply deciding who's point of view we are going to follow.
Quote:
SLIPPY: She's been a good ship, but I'm not sure your Arwing can take you much further.
SLIPPY: At least, not without some serious modifications!
FOX: I like the way you think, Slippy.
SLIPPY: Let's put Twin Lasers on it!
FOX: I'm glad you came along for the ride!
Even when wracked with worry, over his beloved Fiancee, Slippy finds the presence of mind to fully outfit Fox's Machine with new weaponry. He is, in every possible way, the best man for the job.

SCENE 4 PATH 6: UNRELIABLE
AKA: FATHER AND DAUGHTER

Quote:
ROB: Analyzing makeup of planetary urban areas...
ROB: All cities are under enemy occupation.
LUCY: I'll show 'em what I'm made of!
LUCY: I've got to help Papa!
LUCY: Oh, Papa. I hope you are safe!
ROB: I have acquired missiles.
ROB: In this way, the Great Fox can provide covering fire.
LUCY: Thanks, ROB!
ROB: Not at all. Anything for you. Mrrr...ignore that last part, please.
LUCY: Eh? What did you say? Ah, never mind!
LUCY: Prepare for launch!

ROB and the Great Fox are present in every mission in the game, acting as a continual witness to all these disparate events. You could make the argument that the story of Star Fox Command story is a historical record, taken from Great Fox's data files. An unbiased account recorded by an unfeeling, logical machine. The perfect narrator.

Or is he? In a very odd moment, ROB implies that he cares about Lucy, and may even be infatuated with her. He catches his slip up immediately and makes a quick attempt at damage control, and Lucy is so preoccupied with the task at hand that she doesn't even realize it happened. Still, the fact remains that Great Fox's computer system might be able to favor one person over another, just like a person. And if we accept that the story is ROB's record of events, it may not be as unbiased as we assumed.
Quote:
LUCY: Papa!!
PEPPY: Lucy! That was reckless of you!
LUCY: I'm sorry, but I was so worried about you!
PEPPY: Well...um...ahem! Thank you, Lucy.
PEPPY: It's a good thing to have such a brave daughter!
PEPPY: You make me proud.
LUCY: Mama was looking out for me. I'm sure of it.
PEPPY: If Vivian was alive today, I wonder she'd say about all this...
PEPPY: She'd probably blame me for everything.
PEPPY: And you'd probably agree with her!
LUCY: Ha ha! I'm sure you're right! But you know what? I love my big, brave Papa!
After clearing out the area, Lucy is finally reunited with her father, Peppy hare. Lucy is just overjoyed to find her father safe, but Peppy's actions are somewhat stranger. He jumps between berating his daughter to an oddly formal thank you, and then claims his deceased wife would blame him for the state of the war. He comes across as disorganized and almost paranoid, not as the proud commanding officer Lylat Needs.
Quote:
PEPPY: Erm...well...I... I can't stand here all day doing nothing!
PEPPY: I have important news!
PEPPY: I need to find Fox and his crew immediately.
LUCY: I'll go!
PEPPY: No, Lucy, I need to go. I'll be heading for Titania, and it's dangerous.
PEPPY: This is something I have to do on my own.
PEPPY: ROB! Send a message to Fox and the team!
PEPPY: Tell them to meet up with me at Titania!
ROB: Roger.
PEPPY: Lucy, I need you to stay here.
LUCY: But...
PEPPY: Your job is to protect our home! Understood?
LUCY: I understand, Papa. Be careful out there!
Moments after Lucy finds him. Peppy demands she remain on Corneria and continue to protect the home front. He claims he has important news for Team Star Fox, but doesn't say what it is. He tells ROB to send fox a message, but neglects to include the news in it. He then sets out on his own to meet with his old teammates for one final mission.

I say final for a reason. Peppy is now an old man, so out of touch he doesn't even know how to address his own daughter. He thinks constantly of his wife, who passed on long ago. Instead of taking on a defense mission in a well fortified area, he blasts off into hostile space on his own.

Peppy has lost more than any man should. A relic of a bygone age, he's haunted by just how powerless the years have made him. He would never say it aloud, but he's at the point where he no longer wishes for a good life. Now all he desires is a noble death.

The only choice we have in all this is who's fate we will witness.

CHOOSE
HEAD FOR TITANIA
SAY FAREWELL TO PEPPY

SCENE 5 PATH 6: VALKYRIES
AKA: LUCY AND KRYSTAL

Quote:
ROB: Alert! Alert!
ROB: The Anglar forces are returning to this area.
LUCY: W-w-what did you just say? Oh, and Dad just took off, too!
LUCY: Contact any other units that can respond! We need more firepower!
ROB: The Cornerian forces are not prepared to engage the enemy.
LUCY: How long will it take them to reach launch status?
ROB: I am unable to calculate a precise number, but it will be quite some time.
KRYSTAL: Lucy! Can you hear me?
LUCY: Krystal! You've come to help us out!
KRYSTAL: Let's see what we can do together!
KATT: Pleased to meet you, Lucy! I'm Krystal's partner.
KATT: My name is Katt!
AMANDA: And my name is Amanda! I'm Slippy's fiancee!
AMANDA: Let's wipe these goons out together!
LUCY: I'm Lucy! Thank you so much for your support!
ROB: Everyone be careful.
LUCY: No worries. We'll all come back in one piece!
AMANDA: Let's do this!
KATT: Let's go!
KRYSTAL: Let's take back Corneria!
At the darkest hour, Krystal Shows up with reinforcements. The story gives no details as to why she chose now to involve herself or how she got in touch with fellow female pilots Katt and Amanda, but her actions speak volumes.

That she showed up explicitly to help, with no promise of success or reward means that she recognizes that this battle puts far too many civilian lives at risk for her to stand idylly by. The members of her team Wolfpack are nowhere to be seen, meaning that she had to abandon them to make this choice. Instead she is joined by Katt and Amanda, who she only knows as friends of friends of her ex. Seeking their aid meant swallowing her pride and putting aside all the animosity and anger she holds towards Team Star Fox. Her arrival here demonstrates nobility and selflessness of the highest order.
Quote:
ENEMY PILOT 1: We've got a new weapon on the way!
ENEMY PILOT 2: This thing's gonna grind Corneria into dust!
KRYSTAL: S-something's comin'! ?It's a huge assault ship!
LUCY: It's made it into the city! We're in trouble here, ladies!
KATT: We gotta step it up!
AMANDA: OK, let's do this!
There is no name given to the enemy pilots. Their identities are completely irrelevant. They are the faceless forces of evil, seeking nothing but brute destruction. Who they are is second to their actions, and their actions demand they be stopped at any cost.
Quote:
LUCY: We did it! We saved Corneria!
AMANDA: Yeah!
KATT: That was too easy!
KRYSTAL: Great work, ladies!
Against the combined force of the four women, those who would kill the citizens of Corneria were doomed. They were dead the second they boarded their ships.
Quote:
LUCY: Thank you so much Krystal, Katt, Amanda?
LUCY: If you guys hadn't turned up, who knows what would have happened?
KATT: You're welcome! Heck, it was kind of fun!
KRYSTAL: You know, Katt was Falco's partner some time back.
LUCY: It that true?!
KRYSTAL: And this lady here is Slippy's fiancee!
KRYSTAL: Her name is Amanda.
AMANDA: Nice to meet you, Lucy. It's an honor to make your acquaintance.
LUCY: This is a strange way to meet Slippy's finacee!
LUCY: I never imagined it would happen like this!
While the earlier two (very brief) exchanges mean that Star Fox Command passed the Bechdel test, the vast majority of the conversation had by these women have here still focuses on the various men in their lives. There are, of course, in-story justification for this: While Krystal is fast friends with Lucy, she was only acquainted with Katt and Amanda through her former teammates Falco and Slippy. Now that the battle is over, some proper introductions are in order, and what better common ground is there than mutual friends?

That said, we still must acknowledge the fact that all these female characters defined themselves not by their own accomplishments, but by the men they know. Their very individuality is compromised by the sexism inherent in system they live in.
Quote:
KRYSTAL: And Peppy? Where is he?
LUCY: Papa in on his way to Venom with Fox and the team.
KRYSTAL: Ah? I see. That's my fault.
LUCY: No, it's not your fault.
LUCY: Papa just wanted a chance to fly in another Arwing!
It is left deliberately unclear as to whether or not Lucy recognizes that Peppy's actions were borderline suicidal. Her father was her hero, and acknowledging how deep his problems run is not an easy pill to swallow. The refuge provided by denial is temporary at best.
Quote:
ROB: I am receiving an urgent transmission from Peppy.
PEPPY: Lucy! It's me! We did it!
PEPPY: Fox and me and the guys! We destroyed them all!
PEPPY: I'm coming back right now! Wait for me!
LUCY: Fantastic! You did it, Papa!
AMANDA: That's wonderful news! And it means that my Slippy is OK!
PEPPY: Contact headquarters and tell them the good news!
PEPPY: It's time for us to declare victory!
LUCY: Roger that, Papa!
KATT: When they all get back here, they're going to get the shock of their lives!
KATT: Imagine seeing us all here!
AMANDA: You know, Krystal, you should settle your differences with Fox.
AMANDA: The two of you belong together.
KRYSTAL: Hmmm?
LUCY: Oh, I'm so happy!
LUCY: Papa was so worries about all of you!
KRYSTAL: Thank you, Lucy.
KATT: I don't know what's wrong with me! Maybe I'm hungry?
LUCY: Hey! When everyone gets back, let's all make a huge feast!
LUCY: It'll be a welcome home party for all of us!
And so with the news of Star Fox's success on the venom front, and the official end of the war, the four resolve to prepare a celebration for both of their victories. That said, given the issues these individual have had, and the sudden lack of a greater conflict to serve as a distraction, an exceedingly awkward evening is the best some of them can hope for.

ENDING PATH 6: THE MORE THINGS CHANGE...
Quote:
With the battle over and the day won, the entire team chips in to prepare a huge celebratory feast. Everyone stays up eating and drinking and telling stories until long into the night.

Peppy and Lucy slip away to reminisce about Vivian Hare, the wife and mother they lost to illness many years ago. Bringing up memories both joyful and bittersweet, father and daughter sit and talk until the morning light.

And Krystal and Fox, reunited after so long, are finally able to speak of their true feelings for each other. With new hope for the future, and a pledge of eternal love from Fox, Krystal decides to rejoin team Star Fox.
We can assume that Slippy and Amanda, arguably two of the most well-adjusted and intelligent characters throughout the tale were just happy to see each other. Kat and Falco's relationship is a bit more complicated, but the two have always maintained an air of ambiguity regarding each other. We the readers should expect their reunion to not be touched upon.

Lucy and Peppy's conversation, focused around the loss of Vivian, does not give a clear answer as to whether or not the two of them will be able to overcome their problems. However, it does show a glimmer of hope, as Peppy finally begins to fully open up to his child. The two of them have a ways to go, but it looks as though they'll get there, in time.

Fox and Krystal, on the other hand, cannot seem to help but slowly fall right back into the trap they were trying to escape from. Both of them having been under considerable pressure to get back together from their friends and both miss being with someone in spite of themselves. Fox, not wishing to fall back into the pit of loneliness he was in at the start of the story begs and pleads for Krystal to give him another chance. Krystal finally relents not out of love, but out of pity. The two end exactly where they started. No glimpse of progress to be seen.

One final note, The lighting in the last panel makes Fox, look gray instead of his natural orange, making him appear to us and to Krystal like Wolf O'Donnell of Wolfpack. This is a visual metaphor for Krystal convincing herself that Fox, and Team Star Fox by extension will have the same qualities that made her want to join Wolfpack. Unfortunately, it's an illusion. Fox is Fox, and nobody else, and the qualities that Krystal is hoping to find are just not there.

IF ONLY WE HAD KNOWN...

SCENE 5 PATH 7: BY DIGITAL REPLAY
AKA: ANDROSS’S LEGACY

Quote:
PEPPY: Hello, everyone!
FOX: General!
PEPPY: Now, now! You don't have to call me that, Fox!
PEPPY: Oh, lookie! Falco's here, too!
FALCO: I didn't really want to come back... I guess you never can tell, eh?
FALCO: It's kinda nice to see all these familiar faces in one place!
PEPPY: I guess this means that team Star Fox is back together once more!
SLIPPY: Whoooo! The old Arwing magic is still there!
PEPPY: I've still got enough in the tank to take you on, young Slippy!
SLIPPY: Wha!
PEPPY: Listen, there's something I need to tell all of you.
PEPPY: There was a reason I came all this way to Titania.
FOX: What is it, General?
PEPPY: As you know, the Venom Sea is extremely acidic.
PEPPY: At the moment, there's no way we can get anywhere near it.
SLIPPY: Our ships wouldn't last ten minutes in that environment!
PEPPY: Well, after our last battle with Andross, he started thinking.
PEPPY: He put together a plan to terraform the whole environment.
PEPPY: He wanted to make Venom a more hospitable place to live.
SLIPPY: Wait...he actually wanted to neutralize the acidity of the Venom Sea?
PEPPY: Exactly!
PEPPY: And now he's hidden a device on Titania to do just that!
FALCO: Aw, that's crazy talk! Why would he do something like that?
FOX: I bet he wanted to build a perfect world of his very own.
PEPPY: He also built a bioweapon to protect the device!
PEPPY: I bet that's still there, too.
FOX: So if we find the bioweapon, we find the device. Sounds good.
With the return of Peppy acting as a pilot instead of a supervisor, Team Star Fox feels complete for the first time in ages. Suddenly the four are young again, unhindered by the responsibilities they picked up in the years after the Lylat invasion and ready to take on anything. There is only the mission. One beautiful final huzzah.
Quote:
PEPPY: My thoughts exactly! Is everyone ready?
FOX: Eh?
PEPPY: Team Star Fox...launch!
FOX: Uh...Peppy? I'm supposed to say that.
Suck it up Fox. Let the old guy have his moment.
Quote:
ANDROSS: I am the ghost of Andross...
ANDROSS: I protect this place with my bioweapon!
PEPPY: A-Andross?! No... That's not possible!
SLIPPY: Something is closing in, and fast!
FALCO: What is it?
FOX: Get into combat formation now!

For this final reunion tour, it's only fitting that Team Star Fox's first great adversary, the warlord Andross, make one final appearance. But of course, it's not what it seems. The "Ghost" of Andross is just a recording and and an old machine set to guard his final invention. It falls easily enough.
Quote:
FALCO: I've seen plenty of crazy stuff in my life, but not like that!
PEPPY: And here I thought I was done being scared of Andross.
FOX: But it's over now. You hear that, Andross?
SLIPPY: We recovered the device from your bioweapon!
Like the monster under his bed, Andross is a fear that Fox and Company have simply outgrown.
Quote:
PEPPY: Wooo-hooo! Great job, everybody!
FOX: So this is the neutralizer that Andross created, eh?
PEPPY: Let's get this thing into the Venom Sea as soon as possible!
FOX: Wait, General. What if it doesn't work?
SLIPPY: Don't look at me! I have no idea how this thing functions!
FALCO: Ha! Look like we'll have to trust the twisted genius of Andross!
PEPPY: We have no room for error, Fox! It HAS to work!
FOX: I suppose that's true.
FOX: ...And now that we're all here, there's something I need to say.
PEPPY: What is it, Fox?
FOX: Once this campaign is finished...assuming we all make it through...
FOX: I'm going to go find Krystal.
FOX: And that is going to be my final mission. I've had it with this kind of work.
FALCO: WHAT?! You must be joking, man!
SLIPPY: F-Fox? Are you serious?
FOX: This life is the reason I chased Krystal off in the first place.
FOX: I didn't want to see her in danger all the time. I... I couldn't face that.
FOX: So as long as I live this way, she can never be happy.
FOX: I've made my decision. Don't try to change my mind.
FALCO: Gyaaa! I want to argue with ya, but I can't! I mean, now she's flying with Star Wolf!
FALCO: She doesn't like those guys! She's just...chasing your shadow.
FALCO: I knew her days as a pilot weren't over, no matter what you said!
PEPPY: Aw, that's just like Krystal!
ROB: What will happen to me?
PEPPY: Now ROB, don't worry. All of you have done a great service to Lylat.
PEPPY: You have sacrificed much during these long years.
PEPPY: So no one will complain when you decide to hang up your flight gear.
FOX: Thank you, General.
PEPPY: You go and make that girl happy, y'hear? I mean it! That's an order!
PEPPY: Promise us!
FALCO: Bah! You may have gone soft, old friend, but not this bird!
FALCO: I'll fly around this galaxy until the day I die!
PEPPY: I have one more thing to say to you.
PEPPY: Up to this point, all of your decisions have been wise ones.
PEPPY: I don't think that's going to change anytime soon! Trust your instincts, Fox.
FOX: Thank you, Peppy.
FALCO: Hey! Enough sappy chatter! Let's get this thingamabob to the Venom Sea!
SLIPPY: C'mon, Fox! Let's make one last run! Like the good old days!
ROB: I have launched the device toward the Venom Sea.
Fox, perhaps recognizing as we all did that this is the best last huzzah Team Star Fox could possibly have, makes it official: After this final mission, he's calling it quits. On one hand, he's showing remarkable growth by recognizing that Star Fox no longer has a place in the world. On the other, his plans to reunite with Krystal are foreboding at best. As Falco said, her days as a pilot are not over. Fox refusing to accept that she wanted to fly was a key aspect of their breakup. What makes him so sure she'll take him back if he renounces flying completely?

SCENE 6 PATH 7: TO WATCH ME DISAPPEAR
AKA: GOOD-BYE FOX

Quote:
ZAZAN: Emperor Anglar, I beg your imperial indulgence.
ZAZAN: I fear to report that we have intruders in our waters!
ANGLAR: Impossible.
ZAZAN: There is no mistake, Your Excellency.
ZAZAN: All our forces have been put on attack readiness.
ANGLAR: And invasion? Here? The audacity of it!
ANGLAR: Very well, Zazan. Ready your men. Give these fools a warm welcome.
ZAZAN: It will be done, Your Excellency!

The device ROB launched into the venom sea completely removed its corrosive properties. The Anglars, however, thrived in those harsh conditions, as it's their natural state of existence. It would be like a saltwater fish trying to survive in a mountain stream. Their race is effectively doomed, all they can do now is put on a brave face and mount a token resistance.
Quote:
ROB: The acidity of the Venom Sea has been neutralized.
ROB: We can begin our attack at any time.
FOX: Roger that!
FOX: Listen up, everyone!
FOX: This is the last mission that team Star Fox will ever fly.
FOX: I want you all to come back in one piece.
FALCO: Enough with the speeches already! You're starting to sound like Peppy!
SLIPPY: Woo hoo! I'm raring to go!
PEPPY: I'm just honored to be fighting by your side, Fox!
FOX: Team Star Fox...launch!
With his mind finally made, for good or ill, Fox is finally free of distraction. There is only the mission.
Quote:
FALCO: So you're the Anglar emperor, eh?
ANGLAR: Do you like to swim, little one? Ha ha ha!
FOX: What's so funny?
ANGLAR: I hope you like to swim, because this sea bed will be your grave.
SLIPPY: Bring it, old man!
In a story about the dangers of love and moving on, a monster at the bottom of the sea has no real purpose. And so he is buried there, an enemy that barely existed at all.
Quote:
FOX: The Anglar forces have been decimated!
PEPPY: Anyone hurt?
FALCO: No, we're all fine!
SLIPPY: I can't believe it's over...
FOX: It's over... It's really over.
PEPPY: Team Star Fox's final mission is complete, and we all made it back.
PEPPY: The curtains really coming down this time...
SLIPPY: I don't know whether to laugh or cry!
SLIPPY: I just don't know... Maybe I'll do both.
FALCO: C'mon, Fox! You're not really gonna leave the squadron, right?
FOX: Falco, I...
ROB: I have managed to locate Krystal.
ROB: She is on the planet Sauria.
PEPPY: Go get her, Fox!
SLIPPY: Yeah, you've gotta go and meet her, Fox!
FALCO: ...Ah, what the heck. Go find the lady before she leaves you again!
FOX: OK then, I'm off.
ROB: Fox's ship is prepped and ready for launch.
FOX: Farewell, everyone...
And so, with Team Star Fox's Final Mission complete, Fox disbands the team and flies off to chase after Krystal. His mind is filled with thoughts of creating a new life for himself and the woman he idolizes. Team Star Fox ceases to exist along with its last adversary, and its members, friends to the very end, wish their former leader the best of luck.

It all seems so very hopeful. Fox has finally broken free of the entity that trapped him, and can now walk on his own.

But is it a step forwards, or a step backward?

ENDING PATH 7: THE PRIDE AND THE PALLOR
Quote:
The Star Fox members vote to disband the squadron, and Fox promises to spend his remaining days living a quiet life with Krystal. But if a new threat threatens the peace, will Fox keep his promise? To never fight again is a hard thing to ask a warrior...

Their son, Marcus, grows into a fine young pup, and the Fox family enjoys a happy life together. Marcus enters the Cornerian Academy and follows his father's path. The apple does not fall far from the tree, as Marcus is gifted with unbelievable flying skill.

Marcus soon forms an elite squadron to defend peace wherever it is threatened. He teams up with Slippy's son and Peppy's granddaughter, and tracks down the legendary pilot Falco Lombardi. And with that, a new Star Fox is born!
While Fox arguably made the right choice to disband Star Fox and address his problems head-on, the only solution he could come up with was taking another shot at his relationship with Krystal. It's not made explicitly clear why she got back with him, so we are left to wonder if it was pity, or if he just begged her until she caved. Either way, it's reasonably fair to assume that Marcus was born due to the common misconception that having a child would somehow bring them closer together.

Growing up in such a loveless home, it's no surprise that Marcus joined the military at the first opportunity. While he showed remarkable skill as a pilot, he left the armed forces as quickly as he possibly could as well. A young prodigy that detested everything around him, seeking a way to deal with an uncaring world. There really was only one possible end point for him.

Star Fox.

Marcus creates the third generation of the organization that killed his grandfather and and transformed his father into a broken shell of a man. He's joined by representatives of both the Hare and Toad Families, and by original team member Falco. The only difference is Fox joined Star Fox as a way to try and fill the shoes left by his slain father. Marcus joined to get away from the family that failed him.

The sins of the father have passed fully to the sons.

THERE HAS TO BE A WAY OUT...

SCENE 1 PATH 5: ONE FROM THE CROWD
AKA: DECISION TIME

Quote:
FOX: So they've occupied all the cities in this area, too?
ROB: They are advancing much faster than we expected.
FOX: It's times like this that I wish Falco was still around...
ROB: I am receiving a transmission from Slippy.
FOX: Put it on the monitor.
SLIPPY: Fox! Can you hear me?
FOX: Slippy! How've you been?
SLIPPY: I'm great, Fox! We made it to the planetary access point with no trouble.
SLIPPY: I'm going to link up with you soon, so just wait there!
SLIPPY: O, and um...there's someone I want you to meet.
SLIPPY: May I present...
AMANDA: Hello, Mr. Fox! I'm sooo excited to meet you!
AMANDA: My name is Amanda. I'm Slippy's fiancee!
FOX: !!!
FOX: ...Seriously? Um... I mean... P-pleased to meet you.
FOX: Oh, and my name is Fox McCloud. Not Mr. Fox.
FOX: Sooooo... Fiancee, eh?
AMANDA: That's right! Slippy asked to me to marry him last month and I said YES!
FOX: Well, this is a surprise. But congratulations, you two! I'm sure you'll--
AMANDA: Please, Mr. Fox! Don't get Slippy involved in any of this! I beg of you!
SLIPPY: Hey, hey! Amanda! Now, we already talked about this, and you said--
AMANDA: Quiet, Slippy! You know why I'm saying this!
AMANDA: If he asks you to join up, you won't be able to say no!
FOX: ...Well, this is awkward.
SLIPPY: Sorry, Fox! Don't worry about this. I'll take care of everything!
SLIPPY: Don't worry! I'll meet up with you soon!
SLIPPY: Heh heh... Yeah, well, um... gotta go!
FOX: Hang on, Slippy! We're not... He hung up! What a cad!
FOX: Wait, what's that...?
ROB: Enemy ships detected. Switching to combat formation.
FOX: Now? Of all the luck!

Amanda cares deeply about her husband-to-be, so there's nothing particularly odd about her request. Fox's reaction, on the other hand, is uncomfortable and stilted. In addition to the jealousy he feels towards Slippy, he whole exchange reminds him of his demands that Krystal stop flying for her own safety. The familiarity frightens him.
Quote:
DASH: Cornerian forces here! Permission to join the fray, sir?
FOX: This is Fox McCloud. Thanks for the help! What've you got?
DASH: Single Lock with bombs and Twin Lasers, sir!
FOX: In that case, I'll take all the help you can give.
In the middle of the battle, fox receives some unexpected help from the local military. This lone pilot fights alongside him until the end of the battle.
Quote:
FOX: Everything OK over there?
DASH: Yes, thank you! No problems here.
DASH: I'm with the Cornerian forces, I saw what you did today. You're an amazing pilot!
FOX: That was tough on my own. Thanks for your help eariler. It was a bit hairy, eh?
DASH: Well, I survived! That's what matters.
DASH: I need to be going, so I'll say good-bye here.
FOX: Take care! Maybe we'll meet again sometime.

Dash Bowman is one of the many pilots in the Cornerian Military. He does all he can to assist in the battle, then politely excuses himself as soon as it ends. Fox does not attempt to delay him, as Dash is a soldier, and presumably has superiors to report to and more battles to fight.
Quote:
ROB: I have determined Falco's current position.
ROB: We can meet up near the asteroid belt.
FOX: Should we call in Slippy?
ROB: Calling him in will increase your combat ability by 20%.
FOX: Only 20%? He won't be happy to hear those numbers!
ROB: Computing success matrix. Processing...
ROB: Alone, you have a zero percent possibility of success.
FOX: You don't pull your punches, do you?
ROB: There is a way to increase your chance of success.
ROB: You must gather together a group of skilled pilots.
FOX: Fine. I guess I'm going to need help on this one.
FOX: Skilled pilots... Hmmm... Well, there's always Falco!
ROB: Will you join up with Falco?
Alone once again, Fox weighs his options as to how to proceed from this point. The obvious choice of action is to meet up with Slippy and Falco, as he always planned to. The two of them are highly skilled Pilots that Fox knows and trusts. They are in every possible way, the men for the job.

Fox hesitates not because he has a better option, but because he doesn't want to see Falco and Slippy right now. He's wallowed in a pit of self-loathing for months now, and the idea of his two oldest friends seeing how their once great leader has become an utter wreck of a man. He's also afraid that they would pick up on how jealous he is of Falco's freedom and Slippy's stable relationship. The combination of all those elements could lead him away from doing the obvious thing, and down a somewhat different path.

CHOOSE
MEET UP AS PLANNED
GO TO FICHINA INSTEAD

Falco was always more skilled anyway.
