Once you go black, you always go back.
Cat is where it's at.
When you ask for trust and your Fox balks? A Panther is the answer!

This is harder than it looks

I know that Star Fox Command is a real thing. Other people have chimed in and talked about the different endings and whatnot.

I still can't believe this isn't BEAT's Starfox Fanfiction and Fanart Corner. What I'm trying to say is thank you for inflicting upon us this wonderful game.

SCENE 3 PATH 2: HATEFUL CORPSE
AKA: PIGMA’S REVENGE

Quote:
ROB: I have detected an unknown craft in Sector X.
ROB: It is approaching us.
FALCO: Can you hail them?
ROB: Comm link open. Selecting a channel now...
PIGMA: Hrfff... Hrrrrffff... Lookie here... Team Suck Fox...
FALCO: I know that voice.
PIGMA: ...Found you at last...
PIGMA: Don't tell me you... Forgot me...
FALCO: That's not possible. Now way! PIGMA?!
PIGMA: Hrrfff hrrrfff hrrrfff! Finally ...my chance for... revenge...
PIGMA: I will... destroy you all!
FALCO: You can't be here. You're DEAD! You joined with the Aparoids!
FALCO: And even then we kicked your sorry butt across the galaxy!
PIGMA: ...Thanks to you...I exist... as you now see me...
PIGMA: ...No forgiveness!
FALCO: I think Star Wolf is around here somewhere.
FALCO: You want to wheeze out some threats against then, too?
PIGMA: ...They were...allies once... I will... leave them be...
PIGMA: ...Talk...talk...enough talk... Now you die... little birdy...
FALCO: All right, piggy, you asked for it! I'm gona make you even MORE ugly!
Star Fox Command masterfully subverts both Falco's and the reader's expectations with the appearance of Pigma. By choosing to search for Krystal, Falco embodies all our hopes that this tale is as a classic comedy, with no possible end other than the realization of Fox and Krystal's love. But Krystal is long gone, and all that remains is the wretched carcass of a traitor, the very face of tragedy, and the death that comes with it.
Quote:
KATT: I can't just stand by and watch from the sidelines, Falco!
FALCO: Back again, eh? This place is crawlin' with goons, so watch out!
Katt and Falco both have great difficulty sincerely expressing themselves. Earlier Katt claimed that she would not help Falco again, but here she is, in the middle of deep space, fighting beside him once again. Given their remote location, the only reasonable explanation is that she never left when she claimed she would. Falco must be aware of this, but chooses not to call her out on it, perhaps understanding that she deals with the same pride and vanity as he does.
Quote:
PIGMA: You did well... to get this far...
FALCO: I don't need praise from a cardboard box!
PIGMA: Box? You arrogant... hrrfff...bird...
KATT: My lasers will burn you up!
PIGMA: Nnnoooooooo...
FALCO: Katt! You always seem to be in the right place!
KATT: Yeah, I do, don't I?

Pigma's life was defined by the selfish pursuit of power and recognition, which is what drove him to his first great betrayal of Team Star Fox. For a brief time it seemed like he had finally gotten all he desired, a place on Team Star Wolf and fear and respect across the entire lylat system. But it was all short-lived, as he was ejected from his new team and lost everything he ever had, including his very body. And when he finally passed on, it was in the bleak abyss of space, with only his killers as witnesses.

Also note that Falco makes it a point to compliment Katt on her triumph instead of ignoring it or responding with resentment. Foreshadowing a gradual change of character.
Quote:
FALCO: So long, piggy! When you get to the afterlife, tell 'em Falco sent you!
ROB: We are recieveing a message from Fox.
FALCO: Fox? About time! Where is the rascal?
ROB: Sector A-5. In the asteroid belt.
FALCO: OK! Full speed ahead!
ROB: I recommend listening to the message before departure.
FOX: Falco! Hey, buddy! I hope you get this before you go flyin' off!
FOX: Krystal and Star Wolf helped us wipe out the Anglar forces!
FOX: So...um...it doesn't look like we're going to need you this time around.
FALCO: ...What?
FOX: There's a limit to how late even YOU can be.
FOX: But I want you to come to Aquas regardless.
FALCO: What did he say?
ROB: Allow me to summarize.
ROB: Fox and his companions have already eliminated the Anglar forces.
FOX: Oh, hey! And I've got one more surprise for you...
FOX: We're going to have a wedding! Slippy's getting married!
FOX: The little lady is on Aquas right now!
FALCO: ...There's gona be a wedding, too?
SLIPPY: Falco! Can you see me? Hi, Falco! I'm getting married! Yippee!
SLIPPY: We're having a huge party, and we REALLY want you to be there!
SLIPPY: Fox and Krystal are gonna be there, too! They made up and everything!
SLIPPY: What a way to end our adventures together, eh?
FALCO: ...Yeah, what an ending... A bug, lame, Falco-less ending...
ROB: Setting a course for Aquas.
FALCO: ...
ROB: Setting a course for Aquas? Sir?
FALCO: ROB?
ROB: Yes?
FALCO: I don't know if I can show my face after all this...
FALCO: I mean... they won. Without me. If I'm not flying, what good am I?
ROB: You are in this situation because you fail to follow my advice.
FALCO: Shut it, buckethead! I oughta turn you into a waffle iron!
While all this was occurring, Falco's old team obtained victory without him. Their message to him, while joyous drives home the point that they no longer need him, just as he no longer needs them. while it is difficult to accept, change is finally in the air.

Also note that Falco makes no effort to inform Star Fox as to why he was absent. It's unlikely that Fox would not believe him, as he has both Katt and ROB as wittnesses. It's more likely that he does not inform them because he considers this accomplishment, regardless of how many lives it saved, irrelevant.

ENDING PATH 2: OUTGREW THE OLD TREEHOUSE
Quote:
Falco is consumed with rage. If all had gone to plan, he, Fox, and all the rest would be heroes writ upon a galactic stage, reveling in endless retellings of their victory, Instead, fate has seen fit to ostracize Falco from the Star Fox squardon.

And then, just when things were bleakest, Falco got a message from Katt Monroe. "Forget those losers! Grab a couple of friends and form a new squad!" Falco was usually too stubborn to heed advice, but this message came at the right time.

Falco took Katt up on her offer, and they hunting for a third pilot, eventually they found their man--an elite Cornerian pilot named Dash! Together the three of them formed Star Falco, a unit that rivaled even Star Fox!
And thus Falco makes his inevitable departure from Star Fox. It's not an easy transition to make, but it is the one he needed. And given how desperately he searched for excuses to avoid re-joining them this entire path, the one he wanted as well.

A fitting end for him and his supportive friends.

But what about Star Fox?

WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM?

SCENE 1 PATH 3: EASY GREEN
AKA: REUNION WITH SLIPPY

Quote:
ROB: Contact with Slippy is now possible.
FOX: This is Fox. Slippy, come in. Slippy, respond!
SLIPPY: Slippy here. It's been a long time, buddy!
FOX: Sure has. How are you?
SLIPPY: Great, thanks! I'm happy to see you're doing well, old friend!
FOX: Do you think you can join me?
SLIPPY: Of course!
FOX: I'd really like your help fighting the Anglar forces.
SLIPPY: Say no more! I'm on my way!
SLIPPY: Send me the data for the rendezvous!
FOX: ROB! Send Slippy the data he asked for.
ROB: Sending data now.
Slippy does not show even a moment's hesitation when fox asks for his help. Given his reputation as the least skilled pilot in Star Fox, and the fact that he's spent the last few months living on aquas, far away from Fox and the rest of the team, this willingness to dive in could be seen as quite foolish. That said, in gameplay, he is just as capable as the rest of the selectable pilots, and with one of the more powerful crafts to boot. His negative reputation is merely a holdover from his younger days, one that persists simply because he is not concerned about it enough to make it an issue.
Quote:
SLIPPY: Sorry to keep you waiting.
FOX: Slippy! Can you join the fray?
SLIPPY: Sure, no problem!
SLIPPY: I just put a new plasma shot on my ship!
FOX: Slippy! Thanks for your help back there!
SLIPPY: Hee hee hee! My timing was good, wasn't it?
Please remember that Slippy, like every member other than Fox, has not been on the Great Fox, or been active as a member Star Fox for several months now. This new Plasma Shot weapon is something he built in his own time.
Quote:
SLIPPY: Phew! It's been a while since I saw combat! I was kinda nervous.
FOX: You really helped me out Slippy!
SLIPPY: Ha ha!
FOX: Let's keep taking the fight to the Anglar forces! Are you with me?
SLIPPY: Sure, buddy! Anything for you!
FOX: Thanks!
SLIPPY: I bet Peppy's been run ragged since he became the Cornerian general.
FOX: Yeah, I heard that General Pepper had been confined to his sickbed.
FOX: I'm glad they were able to find a replacement.
SLIPPY: I'm just glad they make Peppy a general!
SLIPPY: General Pepper is a good judge of character, eh?
FOX: True enough!
FOX: We need to get in contact with Peppy somehow.
SLIPPY: Yeah, I'm worried about him, too...
ROB: Intercepting a signal from Fichina...
ROB: It is an emergency request for support addressed to General Peppy.
FOX: Do you know who sent the signal?
ROB: Someone named Lucy.
SLIPPY: Lucy? That's Peppy's daughter, isn't it?
FOX: You're right. That probably means she's in danger, too!

Peppy's a space rabbit, right? So he probably has tons of daughters. I say there's no need to be concerned about just one of his children.

Ah, "Team Suck Fox." It really feels like they got wind of fans quoting SF64 all over the place, and tried to come up with an equally quotable/goofy script, silly insults and all. Of course, 64 managed to keep much of the melodrama at arm's length. You see which particular characters have histories with each other, but the actual history is kept out of the rail shooter about fuzzy animals. Command dives into it without hesitation.

I'm excited to get Star Wolf in on things. As I recall, they have some of the best lines (not to mention best ships).

SCENE 2 PATH 3: THE OLD GUARD
AKA: GENERAL PEPPY

Quote:
FOX: General! Can you hear me? Please respond!
FOX: Slippy! Search on all channels.
SLIPPY: Roger that!
ROB: All comms are down.
ROB: The enemy has occupied all of the cities in this area.
SLIPPY: I hope Peppy is OK.
FOX: I imagine the enemy has sent for reinforcements and dug in.
ROB: An astute assessment. Take caution in your next move, Fox.
ROB: I will attempt to raise General Peppy.
SLIPPY: Um... Yeah, well... Er...
SLIPPY: Uh... Fox?
ROB: Ready and prepped for attack.
FOX: What's wrong, Slippy? You seem a little...jumpy.
SLIPPY: Sorry, Fox. It's just...I wasn't able to contact Amanda.
FOX: Are you going to be OK? You want to sit this one out?
SLIPPY: No! No, I'm fine. Let's worry about the job at hand.
Slippy is much too preoccupied with concern for his fiancee to make a big deal about Fox's casual racism. "Jumpy". For shame Fox.
Quote:
ZAZAN: All those who would dare oppose us! Make yourselves known!
FOX: Huh. I guess that's me.
ZAZAN: I will let you go no further.

Fox, much like the reader, does not know or care who Zazan is.
Quote:
SLIPPY: We did it!
FOX: Hmmmm...someone was controlling the forces in this area.
ROB: I have located General Peppy.
PEPPY: Sorry, Fox! I really made a mess of things.
FOX: The main thing is that you're unhurt, General.
PEPPY: Looks like I'm in need of your help once again.
FOX: Leave it to me.
SLIPPY: Me, too! We'll help you out however we can!
PEPPY: I'm counting on you both. Say, where's Falco?
FOX: We're trying to locate him right now.
FOX: You know what he's like... He'll show up soon.
SLIPPY: Yeah, he likes to wait and make a grand appearance at the last minute.
PEPPY: That's true. I was wondering, though...
PEPPY: What are Krystal's plans?
FOX: Um... I don't think I'll be seeing her again.
SLIPPY: Come on, Fox!
PEPPY: Why don't you just ask for her help?
PEPPY: She's a good pilot. She'd really help us out.
FOX: I know! I know.
PEPPY: I'm not going to say anything more on the subject.
FOX: I was the one who told her to quit this life. I'm sure she hates me now.
SLIPPY: You don't know that, Fox!
PEPPY: Well, we could make quite a list of the things you don't know, Slippy.
SLIPPY: Oh yeah? Well at least I have a girlfriend!!
PEPPY: Slippy, that's the most ridiculous thing--
FOX: It's true. Slippy's fiancee is on Aquas.
PEPPY: Are you serious? My goodness!
SLIPPY: Yeah, see! I'm not a big liar!
PEPPY: Everyone's life seems to have taken a different path.
FOX: The only time we meet up is when there's a fight somewhere.
PEPPY: Ironic, isn't it?
PEPPY: If it wasn't for these conflicts...
PEPPY: I'd never have known about Slippy and his fiancee!
SLIPPY: I wonder if Amanda is OK?
PEPPY: I understand how you feel, but now we need to focus on our strategy!
FOX: And I'm changing the strategy! Let's split up.
FOX: I'm off to meet up with Falco in the asteroid belt.
FOX: And I want you to hunt around Aquas.
SLIPPY: I...
Immediately following his re-introduction, Peppy pressures Fox about his ex and belittles Slippy for no real reason. He also claims to have made a mess of things, which given his status as a general, and the apparent total failure of the standing Corneiran military, might be more than just an empty gesture.

Fox, having confirmed that yes, slippy really is getting married, orders slippy back to Aquas. Slippy, however, is under no obligation to obey.

Haha Peppy is a dick.

Anyway, while I don't want to just listen to Fox's orders like a good boy, I'm even more put off by the possibility of having to follow him around while he mopes about his ex. Let's hit Aquas.

Slippy sure has grown, hasn't he?

I know this is a Let's Read, but he had one of my favorite ships in the game (probably my second favorite). It's on the high end of health/shields, and the aforementioned plasma lasers are (almost) as powerful as they come (there's one ship that's stronger). The tradeoff is as small a boost meter as you can have, but that regenerates anyway, so I'll take it.

I really think the game's biggest crime was that it has a very nice variety of ships to choose from, plus online multiplayer that was actually pretty stable, but then it forced you to play in Fox's generic-mobile. Why?

Sorry for the interruption. Back to the Star Fox team's love lives. Send Slippy to Aquas!

It just feels like if Mario Kart DS/Wii/7 only let you play as Mario in a standard cart to help things run more smoothly.

Funfact: If players use DS Download Play to play Mario Kart DS, the cartless (har har) players are restricted to only using Shy Guy, whose car stats are probably like Mario's.

SCENE 3 PATH 3: BLUE
AKA: AMANDA

Quote:
SLIPPY: This is Slippy! Amanda, please respond!
ROB: Analyzing... It appears that planetary access routes have been overrun.
ROB: The Anglar forces are to blame.
SLIPPY: ROB! We know that already! No time to waste! I'm goin' in!
ROB: Perhaps we should wait for Fox. To allow a chance of success.
SLIPPY: A chance of... What?! WHAT?! Why you...you big hunk of tin!
SLIPPY: That's it! I'm shutting you down!
ROB: I knew this would end in oily tears. Whrrrrrr...
SLIPPY: I can handle this just fine, ROB! I don't need you or Fox or anyone!
SLIPPY: Easy, Slippy, easy... Calm... Phew! OK, ROB, I'm a little calmer now.
SLIPPY: I'll let you keep running... but this is the LAST time you insult me! Got it?!
ROB: Ready and prepped for launch.
Emotional outbursts such as this one are somewhat out of character for the usually easygoing Slippy. He took far worse verbal abuse from Fox, Falco, and Peppy earlier in this plotline without losing his temper, but becomes infuriated when ROB (essentially a glorified GUI for Star Fox's Computers) gets in on the action. This offers insight into Slippy's thoughts on the group as a whole: He cares deeply about its members, but is frustrated and angry with the entity they collectively create.
Quote:
AMANDA: Slippy!
SLIPPY: Amanda! You made it, darling!

Midway through the battle, Amanda enters the fray. She arrives not as a damsel in distress, but as a capable pilot, driven to action to protect her homeland, and ensure her fiancee's safety. Together the two of them destroy or drive out the remaining Anglar forces in the area.
Quote:
AMANDA: Slippy! My darling Slippy! You made it!
SLIPPY: Of course I did! It all went according to plan!
AMANDA: Oh, Slippy...
SLIPPY: Amanda...
ROB: Now we must link up with Fox. Processing logical rendezvous point...
AMANDA: Um...Slippy? Why is this big trash can standing here?
ROB: I am not a trash can. I am ROB 64.
ROB: I am programmed in all operations of the Great Fox.
SLIPPY: We know, ROB! Look, can you just...leave? We need some privacy.
ROB: Negative. I must readjust the vector map and tinker with the...whrrrrmmmmmp!
SLIPPY: !!!
AMANDA: Ah... Much better!
SLIPPY: Holy cow, Amanda! You can't just shut him off like that!
SLIPPY: Now I gotta reboot him and everything.
AMANDA: I'm sorry, Slippy, but I just... Oh, Slippy! I'm never leaving you again!
SLIPPY: No way, Amanda. No way!
SLIPPY: I don't want you to even think about joining this fight!
SLIPPY: And if the fight comes to you, turn and run the other way! Do you understand?
AMANDA: No way, Slippy! I have to be by your side. I'm not going anywhere!
AMANDA: Take me with you!
SLIPPY: Huh-uh! Not happenin'! We're headed toward their main base!
SLIPPY: We're gonna hit 'em hard, and it's gonna be dangerous!
AMANDA: Slippy Toad? I'm coming. End. Of. Discussion!
SLIPPY: ...Ulp! OK, OK! Fine! But PROMISE me you'll back off if it gets too hot!
AMANDA: Oh my little green darling, you won't regret this!
SLIPPY: Right! Now let's go save the planet together!
SLIPPY: C'mon, Amanda!
Slippy almost makes the same mistake that Fox made: when he pushed away Krystal, claiming the job was "too dangerous". Amanda, however will hear none of it. The parallels to Fox and Krystal are obvious. But while Fox eventually drove Krystal away with his concerns for her safety, Slippy acknowledges Amanda's skill, and accepts her involvement.

Amanda powering down ROB (again, a symbolic representation of team star fox) is also significant. Whereas Slippy earlier became angry and frustrated with the machine, Amanda simply removed it from the equation entirely. The foreshadowing should be obvious.

SCENE 4 PATH 3: UNCOMMON VALOR
AKA: SLIPPY'S RESOLVE

Quote:
ROB: Alert! We have intercepted a communication from the Anglar Forces.
SLIPPY: Put it on the monitor, ROB!
ROB: Roger.
OCTOMAN: GRRAAAGGHH! YOU IDIOTS! DON'T LET THE ENEMY APPROACH TITANIA!
OCTOMAN: I repeat... DO NOT LET THE ENEMY APPROACH TITANIA!
SLIPPY: Wow, this guy is really angry...
OCTOMAN: Andross's secret facility MUST NOT FALL into enemy hands!
OCTOMAN: If it does, we're all GONNA BE CALAMARI! GOT IT?! GGYYAAARRGGGHHHH!!
OCTOMAN: AAAAAND...it appears that Aquas has ALSO BEEN INFILTRATED!
OCTOMAN: Find these scum and wipe them out NOW! NOW! NOW! NOW! ...Er, over.
ROB: It appears that the enemy has discovered us.
AMANDA: Slippy! I'm scared! Who was that scary man?
SLIPPY: Don't worry, Amanda. Everything will be fine.
SLIPPY: But I wonder what Andross is cooking up on Titania...
If Amanda's outburst here seems comically out of character and oddly phrased. This is because both it, and Slipply oddly macho response are clearly sarcastic. The two of them mock the roles of the distressed damsel and masculine hero, granting themselves a moment of levity before rushing into battle as equals.
Quote:
OCTOMAN: Mighty Zako! Destroy the puny humans!
ZAKO: Those frogs look delicious! Yum yum!
SLIPPY: Amanda? Something's headed your way really, really fast.
SLIPPY: Look out! It's coming right for you!
AMANDA: What is that thing?
ZAKO: I'll swallow ya whole! I'll swallow ya whole!

Octoman believes in Zako fully, and Zako wishes for nothing but what Octoman desires. It's rare to see such wonderfully fleshed out and oddly touching secondary characters. Their love is beautiful and pure.
Quote:
OCTOMAN: BY MY EIGHT ARMS! Not even the Devil Shark could stop you!
AMANDA: Um...you don't have eight arms. And we beat you anyway!
OCTOMAN: RRAAGGHH! SO ANGRY! I must LEAVE!
Our brief glimpse at the tragic end of Octoman and Zako's relationship serves as a grim reminder that all sides are affected by the horrors of war, and likely has a powerful impact on Slippy's next decision.
Quote:
SLIPPY: Hopefully we secured a peaceful future for this planet!
AMANDA: You really don't think we should link up with Fox?
SLIPPY: Fox is just fine without me!
SLIPPY: In fact, if we went back, I'd just get in the way!
SLIPPY: Don't worry about it. It's fine! Everything is OK! No one needs ol' Slippy!
SLIPPY: I can see it now...
SLIPPY: Falco and somebody are flyin' off towards Venom...
SLIPPY: Securing fortune and glory...
AMANDA: Oh. I see. I'm...I'm sorry, Slippy.
SLIPPY: Oh, what am I saying? I'm the only one who knows about that secret base!
SLIPPY: I've gotta tell Peppy! But wait, maybe not... No. No! No, I know what I must do!
AMANDA: Yes, darling?
SLIPPY: Amanda...will you... I mean... Um...
SLIPPY: Marry me, Amanda! As soon as possible! No, sooner! Now! Today! Right now!
AMANDA: Slippy!
SLIPPY: You see, I get it now! I have to protect you!
SLIPPY: Yeah, there's the whole Lylat thing and whatnot...
SLIPPY: But none of that matters. Only you matter! It's always been about you!
AMANDA: Oh, my little Slippy! I'm so very happy! I think my heart will burst!
AMANDA: Yes, I'll marry you! Yes! Right now! This very second!
SLIPPY: Great! That makes today our wedding anniversary!
AMANDA: Oh, I... I guess it is!
ROB: Congratulations!
SLIPPY: Thanks, ROB!
SLIPPY: Please tell Fox and the rest of the team.
SLIPPY: Tell them thanks for everything they've done for us.
ROB: Affirmative.
While this choice may seem sudden and rash, a careful analysis of this story line shows that Slippy's departure from star fox was nothing short of inevitable. His growing frustration with his team members, his furious outburst at ROB, and the surprise and relief he felt when Amanda powered ROB off all show Slippy growing further and further away from his old team in favor of his fiancee. Witnessing a beautiful and unique true love get destroyed by war is the final push.

Team Star Fox was good to slippy, but it's something he no longer needs to be in.

ENDING PATH 3: ABANDON SHIP

Quote:
Slippy decided to leave Star Fox behind and make a new life on the beautiful planet of Aquas...with Amanda by his side. There was no indecision or regret on his part. He would live for his family now...

The years passed. Slippy and Amanda had a veritable army of children, and Slippy thought he could never be any happier. His children grew tall and strong in the clean Aquas air, and love to hear stories of how Dad flew with the legendary Star Fox team.

Several decades pass. Slippy is now an old man who loves to recount tales of the good old days for visiting children. When he finishes a yarn, he often thinks of his friends. Do they still cross the galaxy righting wrongs? He can only watch the sky and wonder...
Slippy never hated Team Star Fox, as evidenced by the kind feelings he holds for them to the very end of his days. But there's no evidence any of the members of his team attended his wedding, or that they made any effort to keep in touch with him over the years. It is left ambiguous and thus up to the reader if they slowly lost touch over the many years, or if Fox cut off Slippy the second he heard of his resignation.

I like to think that Falco, and Peppy would respond joyfully to the news of Slippy's marriage, and would wish him nothing but the best.

Fox though...

FOX TENDS TO HOLD GRUDGES...

Now then let's go back to that decision and go with Fox.

He needs someone to save him from himself.

Slippy Frog marries Birdo and grows a Fu Manchu and you're telling me this is a real game that exists.

I mean... Star Fox is not exactly Nintendo's most prestigious franchise, but the way they flushed it all down the drain in Command is...just...

The mind reels.

You should spend most of the blame being wrought onto Q-Games and Dylan Cuthburt, who directed this game in the first place.

He did sort of fix his fuck up with Star Fox 64 3D though, since it was a pretty nice 3DS port with extra bells and whistles.
