Always good to have multiple suggestions, so let's-a go!

>n
Course Control
This is a long room whose walls are covered with complicated controls and colored lights. Two of these lights are blinking. The first one reads "Bedistur Faalyur!" The other light reads "Kritikul diivurjins frum pland kors." In one corner is a large metal cube whose lid is closed.

I'm guessing that "bedistur" is actually "bedistor," and I know that we've seen a working one before, so we might just be able to fix this later. But first, let's see what lies across the corridor before monkeying around in here and possibly making things even worse.

>s.s
Systems Corridor East

Library Lobby
This is a carpeted room, thick with dust, with exits to the north and south. To the west, up a few steps, is a wide doorway. A small booth lies to the east.
You catch a glimpse of a small object nestled among the dust.
Sitting on a wide table is a machine of sorts, consisting of a video screen and a keyboard. It is currently turned off.

As everyone knows, activating strange machines on plague-ridden alien worlds is always a good idea, so let's do it!

>turn on machine
The screen gives off a green flash, and then some writing appears on the screen:
1. Histooree
2. Kulcur
3. Teknolojee
4. Jeeografee
5. Xe Prajekt
6. Inturlajik Gaamz

Well, this looks interesting, but so does the thing lying in the dust. So let's check it out.

>examine object
Which object do you mean, the green spool or the red spool?

Apparently, it's a green spool.

>green
The spool is labelled "Helikoptur Opuraateeng Manyuuwul."

That MIGHT be useful, but considering how I have very limited inventory space, I'll leave it for now. Anyway, this seems like a good place to leave off, so what to do next time, and is there anything in particular you want me to look up on the computer?

Unexplored paths:
East from Project Corridor West.
West from Project Corridor West.

Puzzles:
Finding the combination to the lock in the Rec Area.
Finding somewhere to play the spool.
Figuring out something to do with the tiny door in the Repair Room.
Fixing the planetary defense system.
  • Finding a replacement fromitz board.

Let's watch Xe Praject. It seems like the most relevant option.

Let's also open the large metal cube in Course Control.

Unfortunately, the machine can't play the red spool, since it's a desktop computer. But let's look up the project.

>type 5
The screen clears and a different menu appears:

0. Maan Menyuu

Might as well read all of these.

Floyd bounds into the room. "Floyd here now!" he cries.

Floyd reminisces about his friend Lazarus, a medical robot.

Floyd produces a crayon from one of his compartments and scrawls his name on the wall.

"Foor moor deetaald infoormaashun on xis tapik, konsult xe liibrereein foor xe aproopreeit spuulz. Tiip zeeroo tuu goo tuu aa hiiyur levul."

Lots of crazy alien talk here, so I'll just summarize it. The Disease was apparently somehow released as a result of extending cryogenic freezing, although it's not really clear how this works. The Kalamontee and Lawanda Complexes were built as automated facilities to research a cure for it, and all of the people are frozen in cryo-chambers underground until said cure is produced.

One thing kind of bugs me about this, though. If the complexes are automated, then why do they have recreation and food-preparation areas?

Anyway, now to check out the exits suggested by Taeryn.

>w
Library
This is a large carpeted room with a desk and many small tables. The sole exit is down a few steps to the east.
On the desk is a machine with a screen and a small circular opening. It seems to be turned off.
Floyd follows you.

If I'm not mistaken, this machine is the device that can play the spools, so let's give it a try.

>turn on machine
"Xe jestaashun peereeid uv Xe Dizeez, folooweeng ekspoozur, vaareez treemenduslee frum pursin tuu pursin, raanjeeng frum wun daa tuu sevrul rootaashunz. Wuns xe furst simptumz ar shoon, dex alwaaz okurz in aat tuu ten daaz.
Xe priimeree simptum iz aa hii feevur. Xe sekunderee simptum iz aa sharp inkrees in xe amownt uv sleep needid eec niit."
The rest of the information is about symptoms which can be detected only by using complicated medical procedures.
Floyd recalls the time he bruised his knee.

This isn't as much text as from the computer, so I'll translate it.
The gestation period of The Disease, following exposure, varies
tremendously from person to person, ranging from one day to several
rotations. Once the first symptoms are shown, death always occurs in eight to ten days.
The primary sympton is a high fever. The secondary sympton is a sharp increase in the amount of sleep needed each night.
Looks like we've been infected. Darn - that means we've only got five to seven days to live. But let's worry about that when we're dead. Time to check out the eastern exit from h!

Physical Plant
This is an enormous room full of environmental control equipment presumably intended to heat and ventilate the Lawanda Complex. Oddly, although the Lawanda Complex is slightly smaller than its counterpart, this plant is much larger than the one in the Kalamontee Complex. The only exit is westward.

Odd, indeed. But no time to ruminate on this - we've got a cube to open!

>open cube
The lid swings open.
The large metal cube contains:
A fused ninety-ohm bedistor

We'll probably have to remove this, but, as is implied by the fact that it's "fused," that probably won't be an easy task. But how to do that? And where to go next, anyway?

examine the fused bedistor

I would guess try using the laser to unfuse the bedistor, but not sure what setting to use.

Since we're already in Course Control, let's start today's exploration by checking out the fused bedistor.

>examine bedistor
I see nothing special about the fused ninety-ohm bedistor.

I guess that a laser could be used to remove it, although it would probably damage the other components. But what's the point of having a laser if you don't use it?

>shoot bedistor
The laser emits a narrow red beam of light which strikes the fused ninety-ohm bedistor. The fused ninety-ohm bedistor grows a bit warm, but nothing else happens.

This message displays no matter what you've set the laser to, so we'll probably have to find some other sort of tool to solve this problem.

This is the main computer room for the Project. The only sign of activity is a glowing red light. The exits are north, west, and northeast. To the south is a small booth.
There is a pile of computer output here.
Floyd follows you.
Floyd examines the glowing light. With a concerned frown, he says, "Uh oh. Computer is broken. A Doctor-person once told Floyd that Computer is the most important part of the Project."

I have a feeling that we've got an ultimate goal! Let's take a look at that output to see if it's any help.

>read output
The printout is hundreds of pages long. It would take many chrons to read it all. The last page looks pretty interesting, though:

"Daalee Statis Reeport:
PREELIMINEREE REESURC: 100.000%
INTURMEEDEEIT REESURC: 100.000%
FIINUL REESURC: 100.000%
DRUG PROODUKSHUN: 100.000%
DRUG TESTEENG: 99.985%
Proojektid tiim tuu reeviivul prooseedzur: 0 daaz, 0.8 kronz

*** ALURT! ALURT! ***
Malfunkshun in Sekshun 384! Sumuneeng reepaar roobot."

The printout ends at this point.

It seems that the Project has almost finished a cure for the Disease, so fixing it would definitely be a good idea. But how to go about doing that?

For a lack of other suggestions, I've decided to show off how to fix the defense system. First, we'll have to get a new fromitz board. There might be one in the repair room, so let's check that out.

>n
Project Corridor East
Floyd follows you.

>n
Library Lobby
You catch a glimpse of a small object nestled among the dust.
On the table is a computer terminal.
Floyd follows you.

>n
Systems Corridor East
Floyd follows you.

>w
Systems Corridor
Floyd follows you.

>w
Systems Corridor West
Floyd follows you.

>n
Repair Room
Lying face down at the bottom of the stairs is a motionless robot. It appears to be damaged beyond repair.
Floyd follows you.

As you might recall, there was a tiny door to the north. Maybe the fromitz board is through there?

>n
It is a robot-sized doorway -- a bit too small for you.

If only I had a robot buddy, oh, wait, I totally have a robot buddy.

>floyd, go n
Floyd squeezes through the opening and is gone for quite a while. You hear thudding noises and squeals of enjoyment. After a while the noise stops, and Floyd emerges, looking downcast. "Floyd found a rubber ball inside. Lots of fun for a while, but must have been old, because it fell apart. Nothing else interesting inside. Just a shiny fromitz board."

How convenient! Unfortunately, he didn't actually get the board, so looks like we'll have to spell it out for him.

>floyd, get board
Floyd shrugs. "If you say so." He vanishes for a few minutes, and returns holding the fromitz board. It seems to be in good shape. He tosses it toward you, and you just manage to catch it before it smashes.

And now to fix the defense system.

>n
Planetary Defense
The access panel contains:
A first seventeen-centimeter fromitz board
A second seventeen-centimeter fromitz board
A third seventeen-centimeter fromitz board
A fourth seventeen-centimeter fromitz board
Floyd follows you.

I don't think there's any way to figure this out without trial and error, so I'll just show it off.

>take second board
The fromitz board slides out of the panel, producing an empty socket for another board.

>put shiny board in socket
The card clicks neatly into the socket. The warning lights stop flashing.

Floyd says "Floyd going exploring. See you later." He glides out of the room.

>close panel
The panel swings closed.

And with that, the defense system should be fixed. Where to from here?

I will beside. Ummm, maybe, how 'bout, west from P. (the bedistor reminded me of this)

Also, perhaps either the curved metal bar or wide-nosed pliers can get the fused bedistor out?

A good question. Only one way to find out!

>remove uniform
You have removed your Patrol uniform. You suddenly realize how warm it is. You also feel naked and vulnerable.

About what I expected. Anyway, we've got some exploring to do, so...

>w
ProjCon Office
This office looks like a headquarters of some kind. Exits lead north and east. The west wall displays a logo. The south wall is completely covered by a garish mural which clashes with the other decor of the room.

Doesn't seem to be much here, but there are things to examine, so...

>examine logo
The logo shows a flame burning over a sleep chamber of some type. Under that is the phrase "Prajekt Kuntrool."

>examine mural
It's a gaudy work of orange and purple abstract shapes, reminiscent of the early works of Burstini Bonz. It doesn't appear to fit the decor of the room at all. The mural seems to ripple now and then, as though a breeze were blowing behind it.

Very suspicious...but let's see what's east of n, now.

>n

>e

>e
Main Lab
This is the heart of the Project's vast laboratory complex. There are exits to the west and southwest, and heavy metal doors to the northeast and southeast. A small doorway leads south.
Floyd follows you.

Lots of paths here, but which one to take?

And, Gerad, you are right about the fused bedistor, but that will have to wait for another time, since it would require a rather long shuttle trip back to Kalamontee, and I'm not exactly confident in using the shuttles after that crash. Sorry.

Lots to do today, so let's get started. First, let's get rid of some of the useless stuff we've been schlepping around.

>drop uniform, board
Patrol uniform: Dropped.
fried seventeen-centimeter fromitz board: Dropped.

Now to check out the exits suggested, starting with the ones from this room.

>s
Lab Storage
This is a tiny room for the storage of laboratory supplies. The sole exit is to the north.
Hanging on a rack is a pale blue lab uniform. Sewn onto its pocket is a non-descript logo.
The odds and ends on the shelves include a small round object, which closer inspection reveals to be a fresh laser battery.
Floyd follows you.

No need to tell me what to do with that battery!

>take old battery
Taken.
Floyd says "Floyd going exploring. See you later." He glides out of the room.

>drop old battery
Dropped.
Floyd bounds into the room. "Floyd here now!" he cries.

>get fresh battery
Taken.
Floyd asks if you want to play Hucka-Bucka-Beanstalk.

>put fresh battery in laser
The battery is now resting in the depression, attached to the laser.
Floyd sings an ancient ballad, totally out of key.

Now to see what's behind Door #2!

>n
Main Lab
There is a fried seventeen-centimeter fromitz board here.
A slightly wrinkled Patrol uniform is lying here.
Floyd follows you.

>open door
Which door do you mean, the bio-lock door or the radiation-lock door?

Taeryn said southeast, which, if i'm not mistaken, is the bio-lock, so...

>bio-lock
The door opens.

>se
Bio Lock West
This is the first half of a sterilization chamber to prevent contamination of the delicate biological experiments in the Bio Lab which lies beyond. The door to the west leads to the main lab, and the bio lock continues eastward.
Floyd follows you.

This seems kind of ominous, so I'll do a quick save first, then continue along this hallway.

>e
Bio Lock East
The is the second half of the sterilization chamber leading from the main lab to the Bio Lab. The door to the east, leading to the Bio Lab, has a window. The bio lock continues to the west.

The door at the western end of the bio-lock closes silently.
Floyd follows you.

Let's see what's inside before going in.

>look through window
You can see a large laboratory, dimly illuminated. A blue glow comes from a crack in the northern wall of the lab. Shadowy, ominous shapes move about within the room. On the floor, just inside the door, you can see a magnetic-striped card.
Floyd stands on his tiptoes and peers in the window. "Looks dangerous in there," says Floyd. "I don't think you should go inside." He peers in again. "We'll need card there to fix computer. Hmmm... I know! Floyd will get card. Robots are tough. Nothing can hurt robots. You open the door, then Floyd will rush in. Then you close door. When Floyd knocks, open door again. Okay? Go!" Floyd's voice trembles slightly as he waits for you to open the door.

Robots might be tough, but I have other things to do in this update. Sorry, Floyd.

If you're wondering, I was hoping to get another death here, hence my saving earlier. I probably would have gotten it if I'd opened the door without looking through the window, but meh.

>w
Bio Lock West
Floyd follows you.

>open door
The door opens.
Floyd frets about the possibility of his batteries failing.

>nw
You can't go that way.
Floyd cranes his neck to see what you are doing.

Ah, so this is one of THOSE passages. :P

>w
Main Lab
There is a fried seventeen-centimeter fromitz board here.
A slightly wrinkled Patrol uniform is lying here.

The door at the western end of the bio-lock closes silently.

Now to try and desecrate a work of art!

>sw
Computer Room
There is a pile of computer output here.

>w
ProjCon Office

Floyd bounds into the room. "Floyd here now!" he cries.

A growl from your stomach warns that you're getting pretty hungry and thirsty.

>destroy mural
My sentiments also, but let's be civil.
Floyd surveys the mural and scratches his head. "I don't remember seeing this before," he comments.

Very suspicious. Next stop, whatever lies west of the Project Corridor.

This is another dusty sanitary facility. Unlike the ones near the dorms, this one is smaller and has no bathing fixtures.

Floyd bounds into the room. "Floyd here now!" he cries.

Again, I applaud the creators' dedication to realism, but still. :P

Next time, perhaps one of the most emotional scenes in interactive fiction. Until then.

Northeast from Main Lab.
Southeast from Main Lab.
South from Main Lab.

no need to tear down the mural. If it shimmered and we're in a sci-fi game, it must be a hologram. Just walk right through.

While Mogri may enjoy nudism, I think we should put on the lab uniform (and look in that pocket they mentioned...)

I know what's coming up, but given how the game has progressed so far, I'm having a hard time seeing it.

Time to go through with Floyd's plan...

>e
Project Corridor West

>e
Project Corridor

>e
Project Corridor East

>e
Main Lab
There is a fried seventeen-centimeter fromitz board here.
A slightly wrinkled Patrol uniform is lying here.

>open bio-lock
The door opens.

>se
Bio Lock West

Floyd glides after you. "Is this...is this a squash court?" he asks.

>e
Bio Lock East

The door at the western end of the bio-lock closes silently.

Floyd glides after you. "Is this...is this a squash court?" he asks.

>open door
The door opens and Floyd, pausing only for the briefest moment, plunges into the Bio Lab. Immediately, he is set upon by hideous, mutated monsters! More are heading straight toward the open door! Floyd shrieks and yells to you to close the door.

Well, all right.

>close door
The door closes.

From within the lab you hear ferocious growlings, the sounds of a skirmish, and then a high-pitched metallic scream!

I hope Floyd is all right, but all I can do is...

>wait
Time passes...

You hear, slightly muffled by the door, three fast knocks, followed by the distinctive sound of tearing metal.

There's the signal.

>open door
The door opens.

Floyd stumbles out of the Bio Lab, clutching the mini-booth card. The mutations rush toward the open doorway!

>close door
The door closes.

And not a moment too soon! You hear a pounding from the door as the monsters within vent their frustration at losing their prey.

Floyd staggers to the ground, dropping the mini card. He is badly torn apart, with loose wires and broken circuits everywhere. Oil flows from his lubrication system. He obviously has only moments to live.

You drop to your knees and cradle Floyd's head in your lap. Floyd looks up at his friend with half-open eyes. "Floyd did it ... got card. Floyd a good friend, huh?" Quietly, you sing Floyd's favorite song, the Ballad of the Starcrossed Miner:

O, they ruled the solar system
Near ten thousand years before
In their single starcrossed scout ships
Mining ast'roids, spinning lore.

Then one true courageous miner
Spied a spaceship from the stars
Boarded he that alien liner
Out beyond the orb of Mars.

Yes, that ship was filled with danger
Mighty monsters barred his way
Yet he solved the alien myst'ries
Mining quite a lode that day.

O, they ruled the solar system
Near ten thousand years before
'Til one brave advent'rous spirit
Brought that mighty ship to shore.

As you finish the last verse, Floyd smiles with contentment, and then his eyes close as his head rolls to one side. You sit in silence for a moment, in memory of a brave friend who gave his life so that you might live.

Well, that was pretty emotional, especially for a game released in 1983. I think I'll end the update here and do the other suggestions for this one tomorrrow, out of respect for our brave robot buddy. :'(

EDIT: And I hope that that link to Foxeris' Starcross LP wasn't in bad taste.

I guess we should go on. There were suggestions for what to do, so let's do them. But first, we should probably take the card that Floyd gave his life for.

>take card
Taken.

Truth be told, I was getting tired of walking around naked, so let's get a better look at that lab uniform mentioned earlier.

>w
Bio Lock West

>open bio-lock
The door opens.

>w
Main Lab
There is a fried seventeen-centimeter fromitz board here.
A slightly wrinkled Patrol uniform is lying here.

>s
Lab Storage
Hanging on a rack is a pale blue lab uniform. Sewn onto its pocket is a non-descript logo.
There is a worn-out laser battery here.

>get uniform
Your load is too heavy.

Of course. Time for some inventory juggling!

>drop laser
Dropped.

>get uniform
Taken.

>put it on
You are wearing the lab uniform.

>get laser
Taken.

You're now really ravenous and your lips are quite parched.

After drinking some of the protein fluid off-screen, let's check out that pocket that was mentioned.

>look in pocket
You discover a small piece of paper and a teleportation access card in the pocket of the uniform.

I wonder what the paper could be?

>examine paper
Week uv 14-Juun--2882. Kombinaashun tuu Konfurins Ruum: 472.

I wonder if that's the same as that combination lock back in Kalamontee? Also, that teleportation access card seems intriguing. Where might that be used? I'm pretty sure that I actually know this, but I'll leave it for you to figure out.

Unexplored paths:
Northeast from Main Lab.

Puzzles:
Finding the combination to the lock in the Rec Area. (472?)
Fixing the course control system.
  • Removing the fused bedistor.
Fixing the computer.
Figuring out where the teleportation and miniaturization access cards are used.

Poor Floyd. (Does anyone else read Freefall? I've been imagining Floyd as Helix.)

I think we should go try to unlock that combination lock.

The only card slot we can get to is Booth 3, so that sounds good for our teleportation card. I wonder where Booth 1 is?

Sounds good to me, too. First, though, there's something I've been meaning to do for a while.

On a low shelf is a translucent bottle with a small white label.
At the bottom of the bottle is a small quantity of medicine.
There is a shuttle access card here.
There is a glass flask here.

>drop laser
Dropped.

>get bottle
Taken.

>open bottle
Opened.

>drink medicine
The medicine tasted extremely bitter.

Hopefully, this will at least help with some of the symptoms of the Disease.

If you're wondering, I had to drop the laser because otherwise, my load would be too heavy.

But now I can fix that!

>drop bottle
Dropped.

>get laser
Taken.

And now to try out the teleportation system!

>se

Although there doesn't seem to be any change, the status line says that I'm now in Booth 2, back in the good old Kalamontee Complex. So let's open that combination lock that's been mocking us since we arrived on this planet!

>w
Elevator Lobby

>w
Corridor Junction
There is an oil can here.
There is a towel here.
There is a curved metal bar here.
There is a pair of wide-nosed pliers here.
There is a cardboard box here.
The cardboard box contains:
A cracked seventeen-centimeter fromitz board
A good ninety-ohm bedistor
A K-series megafuse
A B-series megafuse

>w
You walk down the long, featureless hallway for a long time. Finally, you see some doorways ahead...

Dorm Corridor

>w
Mess Corridor
There is a padlock here.
There is a key here.

>w
Rec Corridor

>w
Rec Area

Hmmm...assuming that this is the lock mentioned on the paper, the combination is...

>turn dial to 472
The door swings open, and the dial resets to 0.

Now, to see what lies within!

>n
Conference Room
This is a fairly square room, almost filled by a round conference table. To the south is a door which is open. To the north is a small room about the size of a phone booth.

I'm guessing that that's another teleportation booth, but there's only one way to be sure.

>n
Booth 1
This is a tiny room with a large "1" painted on the wall. A panel contains a slot about ten centimeters wide, a beige button labelled "2" and a tan button labelled "3."

Yes, all that there was behind that kripping door was another teleportation booth. :P Anyway, what to do next time? Should we try to fix Course Control, or head right into the endgame?

This is the eastern half of the decontamination chamber. The door to the east leads to the Radiation Lab, and the chamber continues westward. A sign on the wall reads "WORNEENG! Raadeeaashun suuts must bee worn beeyond xis point."

Warning, schmarning. Let's go!

>open door
A very bored-sounding recorded voice explains that, in order to prevent contamination, both lock doors cannot be open simultaneously.

Fair enough.

>close door
The door closes.

Radiation Lock East

You begin to feel weary. It might be time to think about finding a nice safe place to sleep.

>open door
The door opens.

And now, to check this place out!

>e
Radiation Lab
This room is filled with unfathomable equipment and large canisters bearing radioactive warnings. Many of the canisters are split open. You can see the Bio Lab through a large crack in the south wall. Sinister-looking forms move about within the Bio Lab. Although the lights here are off, the room is suffused with a pale blue glow.
Sitting on a long table is a small brown spool.
There is a powerful portable lamp here, currently off.

That lamp might just come in handy, so let's take it.

>get lamp
Taken.

Now to get out of here!

>w
Radiation Lock East

You suddenly feel sick and dizzy.

>close door
The door closes.

You feel incredibly nauseous and begin vomiting. Also, all your hair has fallen out.

>w
Radiation Lock West

It seems you have picked up a bad case of radiation poisoning.

**** You have died ****

So, to answer Gerad's question, death is northeast of r.

If you're wondering, the entire rad-lab area is a red herring - there's no way to get a radiation suit, so you can't get the lamp, and you don't need it anyway.

Next time, fixing the computer!
