Can we examine a bunch of things more closely? How about the fromitz board, bedistor, megafuses, u-shaped bar, and pliers?

Get the wide-nosed pliers from the tool room and use those to get the key.

I remember this puzzle giving me some trouble.

The game is being deliberately obtuse about the item you need and there is so much filler scenery, its hard to know what to examine closer. I seem to remember that the game gives you a hint about the existence of the key. Maybe if you have the right item with you when you walk into the room... I don't remember, but I did solve this one back in the day. Granted, I also made the game unwinnable with the same item we need...

Time to try to get that key. First, though, let's get a better look at some of the other tools in the tool room.

>u
Reactor Control

Floyd bounds into the room. "Floyd here now!" he cries.

You notice that you feel a bit weak and slightly flushed, but you're not sure why.

This is a plot point later. I'll explain more when it comes up further.

>w
Mech Corridor

>s
Mech Corridor South

>sw
Tool Room
Sitting on the floor below the lowest shelf is a large glass flask.
On an upper shelf is a metal bar, curved into a U-shape.
There is a pair of wide-nosed pliers here.

>examine bar
I see nothing special about the curved metal bar.

>examine pliers
I see nothing special about the pair of wide-nosed pliers.

About what I expected. Now to actually try and get the key.

>ne
Mech Corridor South

Floyd bounds into the room. "Floyd here now!" he cries.

>n
Mech Corridor

Floyd bounds into the room. "Floyd here now!" he cries.

>n
Mech Corridor North

Floyd bounds into the room. "Floyd here now!" he cries.

>n
Corridor Junction
There is a cardboard box here.
The cardboard box contains:
A cracked seventeen-centimeter fromitz board
A good ninety-ohm bedistor
A K-series megafuse
A B-series megafuse

Floyd bounds into the room. "Floyd here now!" he cries.

>n
Admin Corridor South

Floyd bounds into the room. "Floyd here now!" he cries.

>examine crack
Lying at the bottom of the narrow crack, partly covered by layers of dust, is a shiny steel key!
Floyd absent-mindedly oils one of his joints.

>floyd, get key
Floyd whines, "Enough talking! Let's play Hider-and-Seeker."

Well, darn.

I typed "examine crack" again because I wasn't sure if you could interact with the key before knowing it was there.

Now to try using the pliers to get it out, although I'm not sure about how I would parse that. After going to the Tool Room, dropping off the laser, getting the pliers, and returning...

>get key with pliers
These are heavy-duty pliers, too large to reach into this narrow crack.
Floyd rubs his head affectionately against your shoulder.

Looks like we'll need something else. But what? I'll leave that for you to find out.

Ok so the crack that the key is in must be fairly small, or at least smaller than wide nosed pliers. Of all the inventory items we have, which we've been told we have seen the item that will solve the puzzle, almost all of them can be easily ignored. Flasks, canteens, megafuses, etc. We already tried floyd and the pliers.

That leaves...

Now to give it a try. I have a feeling that this'll be a guess-the-verb situation, though. :P

>get key with bar
With a spray of dust and a loud clank, a piece of metal leaps from the crevice and affixes itself to the magnet. It is a steel key! With a tug, you remove the key from the magnet.

Or not. I guess I just have a habit of underestimating Infocom's parser, though.

And yes, the bar is a magnet. I don't see why the game felt the need to obfuscate it, though. I mean, don't the other elements give enough of a sense that it's set in the 114th century without the protagonist apparently being too advanced to know what a horseshoe magnet is?

Anyway, where could this key go? Hint: Look at past posts for where a normal key might be useful.

The padlock springs open.
Floyd asks if you want to play Hucka-Bucka-Beanstalk.

Oh, no. The key slips from your arms while taking the padlock and both tumble to the ground.

I love the lack of enthusiasm here, especially because that's exactly how I feel - I certainly don't need the padlock, and I won't be needing the key now that I've got the door open. Anyway, let's see what lies within.

>open door
Opened.
Floyd cranes his neck to see what you are doing.

Storage West
This is a small room obviously intended as a storage area.
On a small shelf is a large, unopened tin can. It has a plain white label which reads "Spam and Egz."
A heavy-duty extendable ladder is leaning against the rear wall.

Well, I'm sure that at least one of these items will be useful, but I'll leave it to you to figure out what to do next.

Bad news: That was our last blob of goo. Good news: Now we can clear out a bit more inventory space by dropping the survival kit.

Since it is an extendable ladder...

You can't extend the ladder in this tiny space!

Guess we'll have to find somewhere else to do that. But where? And where might a ladder be useful, anyway?

There is a part of the complex that had a broken ceiling.

Go there, then extend the ladder.

The hallway, in fact the entire building, has been rent apart here, presumably by seismic upheaval. You can see the sky through the severed roof above, and the ground is thick with rubble. To the north is a gaping rift, at least eight meters across and thirty meters deep. A wide doorway, labelled "Sistumz Moniturz," leads west.
Well isn't that convenient.
Put the ladder across the rift and go north!

Sounds good to me.

The ladder swings out across the rift and comes to rest on the far edge, spanning the precipice.

Floyd bounds into the room. "Floyd here now!" he cries.

>n
You slowly make your way across the swaying ladder. You can see sharp, pointy rocks at the bottom of the rift, far below...

Admin Corridor North
The corridor ends here. Portals lead west, north, and east. Signs above these portals read, respectively, "Administraativ Awfisiz," "Tranzportaashun Suplii," and "Plan Ruum." To the south is a wide rift, spanned by a metal ladder, separating this area from the rest of the building.

And it looks like we've got a decision to make. Where to, the administrative office, the transportation supply, or the plan room?

All of them!

If that's cheating, then let's start with Administration.

It's not cheating to say "all," but it's good to have a starting point.

>w
Small Office
You have entered a small office of some sort. A small desk faces the main doorway which lies to the east. Another exit leads west.

Not much here, just a desk and another exit. Let's check out the other exits from this room before doing anything here.

>e
Admin Corridor North

Floyd bounds into the room. "Floyd here now!" he cries.

>n
It is pitch black. You might be eaten by a grue.
There is light to the south.

Better get out of here, then!

>s
Admin Corridor North
There is a multiple purpose robot here.
Floyd rubs his head affectionately against your shoulder.

>e
Plan Room
This is a small room whose far wall is covered with many small cubbyholes, all empty. The left wall is covered with an enormous map, labelled "Kalamontee Kompleks", showing two installations connected by a long hallway. Near the upper part of this map is a red arrow saying "Yuu ar heer." The right wall is covered with a similar map, labelled "Lawanda Kompleks", showing two installations, one apparently buried deep underground.
Floyd follows you.

At least we have a name for this place now, but what to do next time?

Obviously. But the other two suggestions will be easy to do on the way, so let's do them. First, checking out the map and cubbyholes.

>examine map
I don't know the word "map."

>examine cubbyholes
The cubbyholes look like the kind that are used to hold maps or blueprints. They are all empty now.

>search cubbyholes
You find nothing unusual.

About what I expected, although I am a bit surprised that the game doesn't know "map." Now, to the small office.

>search desk
The desk has a drawer which is currently closed.

As every adventurer knows, a drawer that's "currently" closed is an obvious invitation to open it.

>open drawer
Opening the small desk reveals a kitchen access card, and a upper elevator access card.

Floyd says "Floyd going exploring. See you later." He glides out of the room.

A kitchen access card...wasn't that mentioned somewhere before? That should come in handy, what with the fact that we've run out of food. And the elevator access card might be useful, too. So let's take them!

>get kitchen card, upper elevator card
kitchen access card: Taken.
upper elevator access card: Taken.

And now, to see what lies to the west.

>w
Large Office
This is a large, plush office. The far wall is one large picture window, scratched but unbroken, offering a view of this installation and the ocean beyond. In front of the window is a wide wooden desk. The only exit is east.

Floyd bounds into the room. "Floyd here now!" he cries.

Pretty dull, but I have a feeling you'll want me to search this desk. Or do you want me to try out one or both of my shiny new access cards? Or even all of the above? Until next time.

Go to the mess hall (lower case L on the map)
use the kitchen access card on the card slot at the south door, then proceed south and hopefully we'll find some more food.

Today's suggestions were to try out the new access cards. Now, while the mess hall one would seem to be higher priority, the elevator one isn't too far out of the way, so let's try that one first.

>e
Elevator Lobby

>press blue button
You hear a faint whirring noise from behind the blue door.

Floyd bounds into the room. "Floyd here now!" he cries.

>z
Time passes...

>z
Time passes...

The door at the north end of the room slides open.
Floyd notices a mouse scurrying by and tries to hide behind you.

>n
Upper Elevator
You have entered a tiny room with a sliding door to the south which is open. A control panel contains an Up button, a Down button, and a narrow slot.
Floyd follows you.

Well...it's an elevator. Not much to do here, so let's get to the mess hall.

>s
Elevator Lobby

Floyd bounds into the room. "Floyd here now!" he cries.

>w
Corridor Junction
There is a towel here.
There is an oil can here.
There is a curved metal bar here.
There is a pair of wide-nosed pliers here.
There is a cardboard box here.
The cardboard box contains:
A cracked seventeen-centimeter fromitz board
A good ninety-ohm bedistor
A K-series megafuse
A B-series megafuse

>w
You walk down the long, featureless hallway for a long time. Finally, you see some doorways ahead...

Dorm Corridor

>w
Mess Corridor
There is a padlock here.
There is a key here.

Floyd bounds into the room. "Floyd here now!" he cries.

>s
Mess Hall

Floyd bounds into the room. "Floyd here now!" he cries.

>put kitchen card in slot
The slot is shallow, so you can't put anything in it. It may be possible to slide something through the slot, though.

At least they tell you the right verb here after you make a wrong guess. :P

>s
Kitchen
This is the food production and dispensary area for the dining hall to the north. Of particular interest is a machine near the door. You should probably examine it more closely.
Floyd follows you.

Well, if you say so, Mr. Narrator.

>examine machine
This wall-mounted unit contains an octagonal niche beneath a spout. Above the spout is a button. The machine is labelled "Hii Prooteen Likwid Dispensur."

"Octagonal"...hmmm, wasn't there something octagonal that might just be useful here? And should we go up or down from the elevator?

Mmm...fill up the canteen with high protein liquid! Hopefully it won't be made of space celery.

Also, wasn't there another desk to search, back in the Large Office?

Our first priority should be restocking on food or food-like substance, so let's do that. Fortunately, the canteen is just across the hall, so...

>n
Mess Hall

The kitchen door slides quietly closed.
Floyd follows you.

>n
Mess Corridor
There is a padlock here.
There is a key here.
Floyd follows you.

>n
Storage West
On a small shelf is a large, unopened tin can. It has a plain white label which reads "Spam and Egz."
There is a canteen here.
There is a survival kit here.
Floyd follows you.

>get canteen
Taken.

>s
Mess Corridor
There is a padlock here.
There is a key here.
Floyd follows you.

>s
Mess Hall
Floyd follows you.

>slide kitchen card through slot
The kitchen door quietly slides open.

>s
Kitchen
Floyd follows you.

>put canteen in niche
The canteen fits snugly into the octagonal niche, its mouth resting just below the spout of the machine.

>push button
A thick, brown liquid spills over the closed canteen, dribbles down the side of the machine, and forms a puddle on the floor which quickly dries up.

Whoops.

>open canteen
Opened.

>push button
The canteen fills almost to the brim with a brown liquid.

>get canteen
Taken.
Floyd chants the death scene from "Carmen".

This machine will be our food source for the remainder of the game, so we'll be coming back here pretty frequently. Now to check out the desk in the large office.

>n
Mess Hall

The kitchen door slides quietly closed.
Floyd bounces into the room. "Hey, wait for Floyd!" he yells, smiling broadly.

>n
Mess Corridor
There is a padlock here.
There is a key here.

>e
Dorm Corridor

Floyd bounds into the room. "Floyd here now!" he cries.

>e

There is a cardboard box here.
The cardboard box contains:
A cracked seventeen-centimeter fromitz board
A good ninety-ohm bedistor
A K-series megafuse
A B-series megafuse

A growl from your stomach warns that you're getting pretty hungry and thirsty.

Although we have a renewable food source now, I'm not sure if each trip to the machine grants multiple "meals," so I'll hold off on drinking for now.

Anyway, on to the large office.

>n

>n

Which, of course, means...

>open drawer
Opening the large desk reveals a shuttle access card.

Yoink!

>get shuttle card
Taken.

Floyd rushes into the room and barrels into you. "Oops, sorry," he says. "Floyd not looking at where he was going to."

And now to try out the upper elevator!

>e
Elevator Lobby

Floyd bounds into the room. "Floyd here now!" he cries.

(snip wrestling with parser because I forgot that the blue door was already open and that it was at the north end of the lobby)

>n
Upper Elevator
Floyd follows you.

Since down was the first direction suggested, let's go that way first.

>press down button
Nothing happens.
Floyd whistles tunelessly.

Guess this elevator is already at the bottom of the shaft, so maybe we can go...

>press up button
The elevator door slides shut. After a moment, you feel a sensation of vertical movement.

And now, to wait.

>z
Time passes...
Floyd chants the death scene from "Carmen".

>z
Time passes...

The elevator door slides open.
Floyd produces a crayon from one of his compartments and scrawls his name on the wall.

What could lie on this floor?

>s
Tower Core
This is a small, circular room. A sliding door leads north, and a spiral staircase heads upwards. Other exits lie to the northeast and southwest.
Floyd follows you.

Looks like another decision point. Where to from here?
