Interesting. I actually thought the exploration bits were more engaging than the combat.

I'm extrapolating a bit here, but it certainly seems like his experience with Midnight Suns caused Jake Solomon to swear off the genre. Something didn't go right in development, I think.

I'm pretty sure several things didn't go right during development, and also that the sales of the game were disappointing, since it was being discounted by 50% in the recent Steam sale. Also, not going to lie, but I'm pretty bummed this will be the last Jake Solomon/Firaxis game that we get. I was really hoping to get one more XCOM game from him, but from the statement he made when he left, it sounds like he won't be working on tactics games in the future.

Yeah, it's disappointing. I'd be surprised to learn Firaxis hasn't made significant progress on XCOM 3 at this point, and if we get an XCOM 3 that only has 50% Jake involvement, I won't complain.

There's a thought that originally they meant it to be a live service game, which might explain some of the mechanics. Like all the character skins, the colors, the various unlocks for Hunter and such. I am SERIOUSLY annoyed that it forced Hunter into a specific costume for the final mission.

The story isn't the worst thing, I enjoyed it enough, I figured very early on how some of the ending would go, so I planned for it as well as I could. It was very much built for comic book fans, having many, MANY references most people will never get. Individual storylines were fun to explore, but none were super deep, and the Hunter's story was okay, and how it ended was kind of cliche (the power of FRIENDSHIP!).

I did enjoy the combat gameplay. It was very much like playing a puzzle game, trying to figure out the best combination of characters, cards, moves and whatnot in order to roll a fight. Pull it off and the entire thing is quite satisfying. Screw up, and most of the time you can claw your way back. Unless you're playing the post game fights, then you're boned. God those were so much harder than they should be.

I also was annoyed by the "New Game+" mode, which left all the characters unlocked, and stats in place, but removed all the CARDS. You'd have to completely rebuild every character's deck. I wanted to try out an alternative build, but couldn't because I'd have to reclaim all the cards for it, and I ain't got time for that shit.

I haven't been back to the game since I finished it. I think I'll wait for Storm and then go in and finish up the DLC storylines in one go. After that, I'll probably be done. I still find it worth the money, it was fun enough.

I picked this up cheap ($30 for the game and all the season pass stuff) in the Black Friday sales, and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. The rhythm is a little weird with the day/mission/night division for each in-game day, but I'm getting used to it. The social stuff is fine, like Fire Emblem I do it for whatever rewards I may get. I can sorta take it or leave it, but at least it's getting me stuff.

I really like the gameplay so far though. The combination of positioning and Slay the Spire-style information (who's being attacked by whom, etc.) and card play meaning each hero may or may not do something in every round is very novel and pretty dang fun, even if I don't feel like I have the best handle on it (especially the light/dark thing for the Hunter, where I'm not sure what I'll actually get by accomplishing on one or the other), but I'm getting there. I like how a lot of cards aren't direct damage dealers either; it rewards setting things up for a later move.
