Video games
So, Agents of Mayhem. Worth the $3 it’s on sale for on the XBox store?

Good christ, yes. Yes. It's one of the nicest games I've ever played. You've got this full team of effortlessly diverse characters who all treat each other with unerring respect even when they're bantering back and forth, and an absolute metric how-did-they-even-manage-this shit-ton of character interactions depending on which three Agents are in your squad, some of which are specific to a mission and a loadout. There's so much character in the game that you basically can't possibly see all of it.

Is the game actually any good? No, not really. It's okay. But by god, it felt to me (admittedly a cishet white dude) like a joyously inclusive thing. That's worth $3.

So is it an earnest take on G.I. Joe, or profanity laden Saint’s Row parody of G.I. Joe? I’m getting mixed signals looking at trailers and cutscenes online. I never played Saint’s Row IV and that is also on sale at a similar deep discount, so I may be better off with that.

The cusses come from a place of love and respect.

But if you haven’t played SR4 yet, by all means, have your dessert before your vegetables

In the spirit of great timeliness, I just bought a PS3. Please tell me what you think of Contra: Shattered Soldier and Neo Contra. (Also any other recs for good PS Classic gems)
It also sounds like you should try and get Hard Corps: Uprising if you haven't.

Aleryn

Gravity is overrated.
Has any one played Mana Spark? It's $2.79 right now for the Switch and I'm curious if it's a good overhead action roguelike.

Reverie sweet as edition has a terrible name but is on sale for a few bucks on the eshop and I vaguely recall someone saying it’s a decent zelda em up. Anyone play it?

I played the original version on the Vita some years ago. It was the very definition of fine. Nothing bad, nothing outstanding, nothing too memorable, nothing janky or irritating enough to make me put it down before I finished it. I wouldn’t recommend it but nor would I recommend against if the interest is there. If that’s any help. Which it probably isn’t. Not sure what the rerelease added.

I much preferred Blossom Tales in the indie Zelda-like sphere. More varied, more joyful, charming framing device, slightly nicer presentation (taste, of course), female MC. Slightly too many repetitions of certain puzzle types if you aim for 100% though.

Blossom tales was great, yeah. That is helpful, thanks. I've got rogue heroes to plug away at if I have a zelda itch, just wanted to make sure I wasn't sleeping on a gem.

My way, soon
So this track:

showed up in a thunderdome a decade ago and I was impressed then, but also I've heard the Ar Tonelico games are skeevy AF. But then the series came up in a video I was watching so I decided to listen to this again, and now I'm wondering: just how bad are the games really? Because this makes me want to play them, but also there's only so much creep factor I'm willing to stomach.

I can only speak to the first game, and it's been nearly 15 years since I played it, so my memories are a bit hazy.

First of all, yes, amazing music (if choral is your jam) , I continued listening to the soundtrack well after playing the game.

I recall the main plot and characterization in it being mostly "OK", tropey and full of anime, but OK. I remember most of the characters designs being "fine" but there were at least one or two that will be a matter of personnel comfort level. Nothing as bad as say... some of the Disgaea designs from what I remember.

The main problematic bit is you have to... I think the term was "dive"... into the subconsciousness of several of the female party members (at least with their consent from what I recall). From what I remember, these were basically visual novel sequences with minimal gameplay, some sequences were brief, others were long.

Each "dive" was a distinct sequence, addressing a different aspect of the character. The subject matter could range from silly to uh... not great, and the not great stuff wasn't handled well from what I recall... like personal trauma. I don't recall any of it being *exceptionally* skeevy, but I do recall some "oof" moments.

This dive system was mandatory to a degree, as you had to do at least a few to progress the main story, and completing them unlocks additional abilities for the character in question. You don't have to complete all of them from what I recall, but I do think not doing any but the required ones would probably make any playthrough significantly more difficult as you'd also be limiting your options in combat.

Though it was published by NIS America, the first game was localized by Atlus actually, so it has a quality script and voice acting, and from what I recall was bug-free.

From the second game on, they were localized and published by NIS America, which definitely caused a dip in quality, including introducing game breaking bugs in the second game that results in a hard crash during one of the boss fights. Having not played it myself, best I can remember from reviews at the time was it happens in a fight with an optional super boss, so you might not encounter it, but it involved the enemy casting a certain attack after a fixed number of turns and this attack triggered the crash. So the only way to beat the boss was to be so over leveled you could finish it before the attack happened.

I think not to long after release some fans made a patch to at least prevent the boss crash, but there was also recentish fan effort to relocalize the whole game since the original release was so bad.

The Messenger is on sale on PSN, and it always looked like a neat game, but I remember there being some talk about the devs having to patch out something transphobic pretty soon after it released -- I don't reeeaaaallly want to Google it, if I buy this game am I supporting assholes?

It had a "did you just assume my gender" joke that was removed.

There's a "who knows how this got in there???" type of semi-apology in the replies, if you want to see how they responded.

There's also a minor Jordan Peterson easter egg that was left in.

I won't make a prescriptive judgement for you, but that's what was in the game and how they reacted.

I also don’t know who he is, but can see from context clues that I’m better off just letting my imagination paint a picture
