What's your favourite fruit?

FelixSH

(He/Him)
I love fruits. And I love fruit juice. There is now a watermelon juice (it actually is 80% or so apple juice and only 15 % watermelon, plus a few other things), which is now my favourite thing and super delicious (especially cold).

But to answer my question: During summer, mangos and watermelons are so juicy and I love their taste. Clementines are also very refreshing, and therefore great during the heat.

Strangely, the two sorts that seem to be the most popular (strawberries and apples) are my least favourite. A shame, with all the different apple sorts that exist, but they are too hard and often sour for me. Wild strawberries are great, but I have rarely tasted big ones that are really tasty. They often taste like nearly nothing.

Anyway, what sorts of fruit do you like? How do you like them (juice, jam, on a cake)?

A fresh peach at the peak of ripeness is like nothing else. Few things compare to that first bite.

A juicy pear of perfect ripeness is one of my faves, but it's so hard to ensure you've got a perfect one that it's largely theoretical.

I love blackberries, as jam, or with cream, or in a smoothie, or as a flavor in all manner of dessert.

"Watermelon" juice is probably my favorite pink thing to drink. I like apple jelly.

As far as eating? Pears and Mangoes win if they are already peeled. Clementine or some other easy to peel seedless orange is good. Honeycrisp apple is always a good time.

Peaches, strawberries, and raspberries. The problem with strawberries is that, like most other produce, they are bred mainly for 1. Shelf Stability and 2. Attractiveness (size and color). At least, the ones you get at the grocery store are. There are a lot of really fantastic varieties out there, but the problem is you have to grow them yourself.

I've got strawberries planted in my front flowerbeds as "ground cover" between the flower bushes, and we wind up with so many berries every year that even with us, the neighbors, and the wildlife some of them STILL end up rotting unpicked. They're small/medium, red and flavorful all the way through, and so juicy that I've ruined shirts because I've forgotten to be careful.

Avocado. While it isn't sweet, it's loaded with healthy fats and nutrients and you can do so many things with it! After that, any kind of berry. Berries are amazing things.

Kinda hard to pick just one. I love red apples and watermelon for snacking, and blueberries are delicious in a salad or as a side for lunch. Believe it or not having a few blueberries in a dish next to a hamburger compliments it well.

Assuming ideal conditions: A mango.

On average: Whatever variety of orange is in season tends to be very reliable.

Asian pears are a superfruit fusion of the best part of pears and apples. As Kirin said, perfectly ripe pears exist only for a fleeting moment when all of the planets are briefly in alignment, and otherwise go immediately from underripe to overripe. Asian pears solve that problem by tasting like pears but otherwise giving them the physical properties of an apple.

After that, I love the taste of pomegranate, but can't be arsed to fuck with one. Stuff with pomegranate inside that's already done the work for me is aces, though!

I love a good sour Granny Smith. A nice green banana isn't bad either, just before it ripens. But, I think my favorite fruit is a perfectly ripe nectarine.

Blueberries / Bilberries are probably my favourite. I miss bilberries but wild blueberries are pretty darn close. Raspberries and strawberries from the back garden are also tough to match. Never been quite fond of apples outside of pies or compote though.

Have you ever tried a Northern Spy? In addition to having the most badass apple name, they're wonderfully tart. Just a bit more sour than Granny Smith.

I have not! I'll keep an eye for them. I did try the new 'Cosmic Crisp,' and I've got to say it was pretty disappointing. Especially considering the cost! If that's the future is Washington apples they're in real trouble.

The story of the apple though is fascinating! Found here: http://www.sporkful.com/a-new-apple-is-born/

I have blueberries in my freezer most of the time, except for the brief period between when I finish them and buy more. Frozen blueberries are perfect.

Northern Spies apparently date back to 1800.
There's a guy from up in the mountains who would show up to my local farmer's market during the right seasons with baskets of dozens of different varieties of heirloom apples, many of which were delightful and delicious. There were so many I can never remember which were best though. I need a dang apple rating app for these things.

Meanwhile speaking of freezing berries, whenever blackberries and the like are on sale because it's the edge of the season, or I just have more than I can eat before they get moldy, I toss 'em all in the freezer and then use them to make smoothies. Works great and I can leave out including any ice.

There is no fruit that satisfies me more than a fresh, local peach. Peach season in Ontario is almost over, and I'm buying them whenever I can.

Frozen berries have been a recent revelation for me. I never really purchased frozen fruit but started doing smoothies a few months ago when fresh fruit was hard to find due to COVID. Frozen berries are quite good!

Yeah, I also just buy pre-frozen bags for smoothies as well. Lately I've been getting some frozen mango chunks as well.

Hmm, probably strawberries (or just berries in general) if pressed to answer. Also a big fan of kiwis!

Pineapple! I love pineapple. So juicy and sweet. Oranges are always onhand as a go-to, especially clementines/mandarin/little easy-to-peel ones. None of that thick-skinned, need a knife shit. Mangoes and peaches get honorable mentions for deliciousness, and if you get the really sweet strawberries, mm. Mmm!

Pretty much all fruit is great, but I want to give a special shout-out to lychees, which I love and haven't been able to get this season due to COVID. I miss you, lychees.

Beyond that, I'm a big fan of a good crisp apple (Jazz apples are pretty close to ideal for me), Cara Cara oranges, nectarines/plums/most stone fruit. The theoretically perfect pear is indeed a thing of beauty, but I also like underripe ones.

I tried a lychee flavored thing once, but have not had the chance to try the actual fruit.

In my experience, about 95% of lychee-flavored things are pale shadows of the real fruit. If you ever get to have some, I highly recommend it.
