Wasting Away in The Blue Hole - Dave the Diver

Oh Falselogic! there aren't any fun, compelling, inventive games anymore! It's all shoot this or dungeon that! Everything is always grey or brown!

Wrong. You are wrong. What you need is Dave the Diver. Why is that? Well, where to start? Let's marry a random generated seascape where you must manage air resources, weight limits, and harvesting of resources with the management of a sushi bar that is dependent upon those resources. But, if that gets too rote for you than let's add in the development of new tools to allow you to better harvest resources and explore more of the seascape. Oh, you've got that covered now as well? Fine! Now you manage fish farm. Perfect? Well, there is more as you've now got a rice paddy, crop fields, and a seaweed farm to manage as well.

You can also upgrade your weapons with attributes to making capturing prey easier, because yes, fresh fish matter! Oh, and there's a bit of a collect them all aspect to all those fish and sharks and squids you'll find. Oh, this perfect loop of kitting out, harvesting, planning, and then executing the perfect dinner night is getting a little dull? Good thing these are interspersed with gameplay innovations, one-offs, and boss fights. So far, I've done a a couple of stealth missions, there was a boat race, as well as chase sequence.

Every time there is the hint that things might be getting too rote the designers introduce another little twist, another mechanic, or an expansion on an existing one. When the gameplay gets a bit repetitive they mix it up with a mission that involves something else or plays completely differently. The end result is that when I sit down to play this game the hours just disappear.

Oh and then there are all the over the top animeish cutscenes. Can't forget those! Please play this game! I do not think you will regret it.

I've heard a little about this game, and I don't understand any of it. Intriguing.

It's a chill and charming game where you spend 2/3 of your time diving and exploring and 1/3 of your time in a restaurant sim. While you're diving, you explore, catch fish, collect resources and do quests to advance the story. In the restaurant, it's a plate-spinning game where you're serving tea, carrying dishes back and forth, cleaning up messes and trying to make sure no one waits too long to be served. It's nothing special on paper, but it's very well executed and generally super charming. There's a pretty decent amount of variety in what I've seen underwater so far, and the restaurant sim is ramping up in complexity as I start to hire staff and deal with VIPs who have special requests. It's very laid back and pretty easy to play in short chunks, which I appreciate a lot. I'm about 5-6 hours in and definitely recommend it if you're the kind of person who gets excited when they catch a high-quality fish or manage to upgrade their maximum diving depth with better equipment.

A Switch port is apparently planned for later this year, so keep those fingers crossed! I bet this game is great on Steam Deck, anyway.

I feel like this thread is both good but also very misleading: It's The Blue Hole. (The first few hours use the full title in so many weird places and ways that it feels like a weird localization artifact).

Fixed.

Also, I've made it to the third VIP visit and it introduced an entire new minigame! I had to do food prep for Sancho. How many more layers does this game have?

Though I worry that in order to get the Diamond Level on the Instagram app a-like I'm going to have to do so so many dives to collect the same ingredients over and over and over again to get enough to upgrade the meal to have a high enough rating...

And I just opened up a franchise. Which is a second restaurant. The money is nice but stocking both shops with fish is quite the burden.

I also think there is some sort of DLC in the works. At my fish farm there are still two pens that I can't open up. My guess is their for additional content some time down the road.
