On the one hand, this is precisely what I am playing any RPG for, but it’s weird to have it laid out like that without any kind of pretext.

Duran/Charlotte/Angela is a pretty solid team, although I'm kind of scratching my head for how you'd build Duran in that case. Angela can basically do whatever, and Charlotte's likely to go Dark since you don't really need sabers with Angela, but then Duran's stepping on someone's toes no matter how he builds. Probably Paladin or Duelist? I dunno.

Probably Swordmaster for Weak Point All (And Fraction for Black Rabite) and to have a stronger point character. Angela and Dark Charlotte will spam attack spells pretty well as AI, so those two (And Hawkeye) are going to be the least incompetent companions. Which is nice!

That's actually the team I beat No Future with months ago and forgot to mention:
UchiWbJ.jpg

Archmage, Swordmaster, Necromancer IIRC. Healing ended up being largely unnecessary because there were only a handful of attacks in the entire game that didn't one-shot me, but Black Curse is always great and Dark Charlotte's summons are actually pretty good. Angela was great at nuking mobs, but she would run out of MP way before bosses died for most of the game, so she doesn't really work as primary damage for No Future.

It was neat to actually have to learn boss fights, and some of the ones that gave me the most trouble really surprised me. Dolan was scary again! Gorva was a nightmare!

It's a pain to set up though, since it's balanced around you transferring gear/chain abilities from prior runs. So two runs, one with your planned party for the gear and one with everyone else for chain abilities, before you can really play it. I just used Cheat Engine to skip the equipment run, but that luxury isn't available on consoles. It's technically possible to beat without transferring anything, but it's difficult enough even with the stuff that I wouldn't recommend most people try without.

I played like 75% of the game on Hard, until I got sick of spending all my time using items to revive and heal the batfuckingly horrible AI, so I cannot fathom playing it on something worse.

while my wifi has been out for the past week, i decided to actually sit down and finish this game. some thoughts:

i went all light classes with my reisz-duran-kevin squad, it was mostly fine. the only boss i really had trouble with was the fire benevedon, because i went right after the navarl events, with only kevin getting to class 3 and also i missed the cats selling gear upgrades on my way in. reisz felt like the weakest link on the team because duran and kevin would just melt enemies, while she was more crowd control and support.

for class 3 i just did whichever ones i had access to first, because the remake's system puts a lot more emphasis on player skill than the original so basically any class will be competent (in the player's hands, obvi the AI can be very.... special). but speaking of class changing, wow the class change menu is awkward.

the game felt surprisingly long despite finishing the main story in 17 hours and the post game in just over 20.

post game stuff: it wasn't very long and it basically boiled down to mirror matches, but i appreciated it giving the main characters their only little side quests. i had some trouble with duran's, but kevin's was really easy and reisz's was ultra chaotic.

anyway after i beat anise the first time, i decided to reset everyone's classes and see what the dark side had to offer. duran traded his holy saber and his heal light for elemental sabers, which is not a particularly good trade for that point in the game but i can see the utility when you're fighting the benevedons earlier in the game. however he did get an absolutely ridiculous skill that recovers his HP by 30% every time he slays an enemy, and that's amazing. kevin traded heal light and his cs boost spell for a spell that increases critical rate, and that's.... fine.

reisz's traded her stats up for stat downs, and that's not a great trade, but her final dark class adds 35% to an ally's CS gauge every time she uses a class strike, so that's nifty.

anyway then i started a new game + with angela-hawkeye-charlotte. i'm much less afraid of using this party because using special abilities no longer causes enemies to do unblockable full screen counter attacks (and also all the perks of a NG+). i'm enjoying the change of pace and i like the way they solved the issue of MP consumption. also angela is, like, funny. and replaying the early parts of the game made me realize the contextual dialogue between characters really drops off late in the game (there's a lot of actual exchanges early on, late in the game the characters mostly just general lines like "we've beaten three benevedons!" at each other), but on the other hand so do all the "go talk to these five specific NPC before you can progress" moments and for that i am grateful

Back on my bullshit... I've played through this twice over a week or so, and I'm on my third playthrough. I'm on a new system so I didn't have save data. Played through it with Kevin and the boys once and then Riesz and the girls after that, the last characters I'd never lead with. For Riesz's playthrough, I used with the triple exp and max cs skills just to see things through quickly. It gave me the opportunity to choose otherwise Not Good classes like the Vanadis for Riesz because it didn't matter. And she was the only person on my team with a level 3 area class attack! Certainly made the post-game dungeon which I will always do tolerable. Her summon is extremely useless and she would cast it literally every time I switched to someone else. I like the hat. Maybe I've used Vanadis before... I know I've repeated some classes here.

I started my third playthrough (Angela, Duran, Hawkeye) on expert mode to see what it was like. It sucks? It wasn't too bad with imported gear and chain abilities at first but the boss battles were a huge slog and I gave up on the second. (golems) Apparently, enemies have much higher magic defense on that mode. And it's apparently balanced around using the triple xp skill, which I didn't want to use. I initially started that save without resetting people's training points. (I kind of feel like they clutter things up... I'm fine keeping the plot-based chain abilities) I thought maybe I could use Angela's class specific chain abilities on other classes. No, those disappear if you reuse a character. Restarted because that would be the only circumstance under which I'd want all those random skills.

Anyway, I'm not using the rabite chain ability or the triple xp one on this playthrough, at least yet. I'm still completely baffled by the way Angela's skills trees are designed. She's still extremely overpowered without access to all of her spells, so I don't know why they're split up like this. It's just no fun at all. I want a mode where I can spend other people's talent points on Angela because I want to use all the spells but don't want to be completely overleveled... well, I'm using the triple xp skill during the post-game.

Regardless, I still love the hottest game of 2020, the 3D Trials of Mana remake...

I don’t remember what they were like in the original. Here, they just do some damage (not really a lot) and have some status effects, which do not work on bosses. Vanadis’s status effect also makes it so enemies give only one xp when they die, denying you satisfying talent points. Perfect for the triple xp run, though! You get to give Riesz a nice hat and enjoy seeing a wolf chariot occasionally.

They’re like the class skills in that you see an animation if you play them while you cast and you can’t switch to characters who are casting them. The characters are also immune to damage while they’re casting.

Anyway, I turned on the triple XP earlier than I intended because I wanna see all those spells…

I started this! I picked Riesz with Angela and Kevin. I have two of the spirits so far, and haven't gotten to any class upgrades (I am looking forward to these, mainly). The dumb AI has worked out so far that Angela is pretty good at hanging in there and avoiding stuff and Kevin is an idiot who gets himself killed constantly. Also enemies are now doing damage that actually threatens me and that's pretty rude.

Strictly apocryphal, but I have seen a lot of people start their Trials of Mana with Riesz with Angela and "random third". Riesz and Angela are also standouts in later materials where Square Enix needs to remember this game happened, and want to create a figure or crossover character or something. I've played this game with all characters, I know their deals, but is there something about Riesz and Angela that they've become the poster characters for this entry? In a game that starts you from zero as far as knowing "who" you are picking, they seem to be standouts.

They’re the sexy lookin’ one and the cool lookin’ one, and the most easily understood character arcs, and Reisz is perhaps the easiest to play character. So they get the prominence

I’d also guess “Valkyrie” and “Sorceress” just look like classes that are likely to get fun things to do even if you haven’t looked into the class change mechanics at all.

Angela and Riesz are sexy. Meanwhile, Duran is boring, Kevin is a little too unusual, and Charlotte...well. I'm surprised Hawk doesn't get more rep, though.

How long does it take before I start unlocking new classes, by the way? Just in general.

I feel like Duran was there to fill a quota of "hot-blooded jackass shonen hero" or something. Like here's five more interesting characters and then this sword boi who's hunting a guy cuz of pride/honor stoof and his hometown serves as a base of operations for other quests.

And I'm pretty sure Hawkeye is quite beloved? Maybe he doesn't show up in fanart as often as Riesz or Angela or Riesz, but Echoes had him in one of its opening missions.

After a lot of painful deliberation, I settled on Valkyrie (Light) for Riesz, Dark for Angela and Dark for Kevin. Already starting to wonder if I should have gone light for Kevin to get some healing magic, especially after the truly awful trap boss fight in Laurent castle. Angela seems to be doing fine, and Riesz, we'll see if buffs are useful enough to make much difference or if I should switch to debuffs (if those are useful enough to make much difference). But so far I haven't unlocked much in the way of difference-making moves or abilities so it's mainly just the stat boosts and new combo attacks making the difference (and the costume changes, of course).

Maybe I chose poorly. Riesz's buffs are not impressive, and my party members keep constantly dropping dead during boss fights, leading to having to spam items constantly. But maybe this is just the famed Terrible AI at work. If I can find items to reset my class I might try switching Riesz to dark and Kevin to light to get some healing.

Got my class upgrades to rank 3, and wow, they made a huge difference. Fighting the remaining Benevodons was a lot less frustrating than the first few were. I went Light-Dark (Starlancer) with Riesz for auras and buffs to the whole party; Dark-Dark (Magus) for Angela to make big kaboom (and her magic does hit really hard, especially when she hits weaknesses), and Dark-Light (Enlightened) for Kevin. Moon Saber to make attacks drain HP is huge when he puts it on the party, and his class strike just one-shots pretty much every enemy in any random fight.

Currently in what I assume is the final dungeon, going through the boss rush. It stands to reason there are 8 of these fights... Cripes.
