This is a thread for those games what feature strategical robot combat in griddle based fashion;

To wit the first officially localized game in fifteen-ish years is coming out in October:

Octopus Prime

Mysterious Contraption

I’m hoping that confirmation of a Steam release of SRT30 means that a Switch release isn’t impossible.

Luckily, the Switch games all contain surprisingly excellent English localizations and the console itself is region free, so even if it doesn’t, it’s not exactly inaccessible.

Oh man, Magic Knight Rayearth!

Though I can tell I'm falling a bit out of touch with new mecha shows, there's a few I don't recognize at all like Knights & Magic and Majestic Prince.

I posted over in the positivity thread about the concert that accompanied Sunday's livestream about this game, and here's (most of) the concert itself, only missing Aniki's performance of Bokura no Mazinger Z which started the event off.

As regards the SRW30 trailer itself, it is a little underwhelming and doesn't really feel like a big anniversary celebration (apart from that poor fucking Huckebein with the big dumb XXX visor)... But that this is getting a global release probably had a hand in restricting what series could be in the game given licensing issues. If it comes to Switch or PS4 I'll definitely get it regardless.

Anyway, I've been playing through SRWV lately and I'm enjoying myself, even if the roster is a little less tailor-made to tickle the pleasure center of my brain than T's was. My endgame crew is probably going to be 90% Gundams by volume, and an Eva or two. The setting's got a bit more flavor, though, and gives me a bit of a Battlestar Galactica vibe. I'm digging it more than I thought I would.

Oh snap. Both of those shows are a good time. Majestic Prince in particular rules. It's such a great throwback show. If you didn't have such a backlog with less and less time these days, I'd recommend you watch both.

Oh dang, I suppose the Macross settlement is probably too recent for them to slip those into a global SRW already, boo.

Yeah, this has probably been in development for several years if it's releasing in October.

I dunno, I'm buying on PC/Steam so I haven't paid attention to the other avenues at all.

I guess I'll have to get this on Steam as well, despite not really liking to play games on my PC that much. Apparently accessing DLC on southeast Asian storefronts is a big hassle, and one of the preorder bonus units (the SRX) is too important to me to risk not being able to get it.

Dracula

Plastic Vampire
(He/His)
Oh man, the SRX is a preorder unit? RUDE!

I'm still making my way through T, which I like a lot. SRW is one of those series that I super duper love, but I tend not to finish the games. I've still got a backlog of four or five older ones that I need to finish someday.

Yeah, the series reference/history OG units have been preorder bonuses since the PS3 games I think.

I made a SEA PSN account ages ago for that stuff, but that's been lost to the sands of time I think.

I had a great time with T, but yeah, these games can require a big time commitment. At a certain point the stages become so protracted that I only really have the attention span for one per evening, and when you have 50+ stages per game, well...

Meanwhile I'm still making my way through V, and the overall plot has become absolute spaghetti that I'm not even bothering to try to keep track of anymore. There are at least three dimensions involved so far with a ton of historical overlap between them, and you meet certain people outside of their home dimension, and then you're not sure what dimension you're in anymore, and there just comes a point where I'm not willing to expend any more brain cells trying to keep it all straight. I'm still tracking the individual characters' stories, but I can't be bothered to remember who comes from what dimension. Ultimately it doesn't really matter -- the plot in these games is for the most part just a backdrop against which to joyfully smash model kits together like a seven year old, and I'm having fun.

SRW30 is out! Anyone play it yet? I have not, partly because I still have one stage left to go in SRWV and I don't want to contract a case of Super Robot Burnout. But also because I'm waiting for the DLC to come out before I play so I can get the full experience.

DLC 1 (November 2021)
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack: Beltochika's Children
Voltes V
Sakura Wars
Super Robot Wars OG (RyuKoOh & KoRyuOh)

Trailer:

DLC 2 (December 2021)
Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans
Ultraman
Super Robot Wars OG (Alt Eisen Riese & Rein Weissritter)

Started in on SRW30 the other night and so far I'm loving it. The AOS System, which lets you upgrade numerous facilities of the main ship to produce different effects, allows you to really tailor things to your playstyle. It's usually my first stop after a mission. The original characters seem colorful and interesting, and with its various side and repeatable missions this may be the meatiest SRW to date. My one complaint is that the protagonist's Spirit skills are determined by birthday and blood type, and I went with the default, not realizing that it would lock me out of getting Focus (called Zero In in some previous games), my bread and butter Spirit. Oh well, I'm sure I'll manage.

I recruited the SRX Team right before bed last night, and I was grinning ear to ear at hearing their familiar music and voice acting. Interestingly[1], they appear to be from the Alpha timeline rather than OG, as Aya mentions that they're affiliated with Londo Bell back home. That's unexpected! I wonder if the other OG units will have similar hints as to where they're from; I'll be very surprised if Kyosuke and Excellen turn out to be from Impact.

As far as I can tell the SRX never receives any additional attacks, so I don't know if it's the most viable unit. That didn't stop me from dumping most of my savings into upgrading it and Ryuusei, though.

[1] This is not actually interesting.

I'm now running into the problem where I have too many units I like and not enough deployment slots to use them all. All things considered, it's not a bad problem to have. In previous SRW games I've had to round out my team in the endgame with one or two "uh... I guess you can come too" units that I didn't care about, but here it's going to be a battle for the spotlight.

Update on this, now that I've collected most of the OG units: Masaki, Kusuha and Bullet are all also from Alpha, as they recognize each other and the SRX Team. (This is not a case of mistaking parallel versions for their counterparts, as the game already covered that with various people thinking they recognize Usso and Amuro but actually only being familiar with the versions of them from their home world.) I haven't gotten Excellen yet, but she and Kyosuke would indeed appear to be from either Compact or Impact (as they mention the Einst), and Gilliam is from the classic timeline (he thinks the enemy units look like Guests). It's possible but unlikely that either K&E or Gilliam are actually from OG, but not both, as they don't interact with each other. I guess they're only pulling characters from "finished" timelines so as not to mess with the ongoing OG canon.

EDIT: I forgot Gilliam references the A.E.U.G. from his home world, so he's definitely from Classic, not OG. And Kyosuke would have said something about the Alpha characters looking familiar, so there's definitely no OG crossover happening here.

What’s the best way to get a copy of SRW30 for the Switch right now? It’s not available on Amazon.ca and I’d rather not use Play Asia

Apparently I can order things through Amazon.com even though I live in Canada.

You did one thing right, Bezos.

And as proof of that I am playing Super Robot Wars 30 right now!

My usual main character naming practices have given me the perfect SRW/mecha anime protagonist name; Sharko Crabbus

Super Robot Wars W has a fan translation now, for the Go-Lion Tekkaman Blade die-hards among this world (also it's just a fun one).

At last, our time in the sun has come. There are dozens of us. Dozens!!

I've also long been curious about experiencing the Valzacard's famed utter brokenness firsthand, so maybe this'll be my next stop after SRW30, instead of completing the VXT trilogy.

TekkaBlade is... honestly nearly as broken just because it has a bazillion units who all get stat bonuses for being proximate to each other and get crazy strong low cost group attacks so you'll be well served.

They just streamed a short video on SRW30's final content updates, coming extremely soon:

For those who don't feel like watching:

- New difficulty mode
- New Area and Onboard missions
- New attacks for SRX (yay!) and Huckebein 30th
- Armored Trooper VOTOMS (featuring a new Scopedog design by Kunio Ookawara)
- Choujuu Kishin Dancougar (featuring a new Ultimate Dancougar design by Masami Obari)
- Majestic Prince: Genetic Awakening
- Getter Robo Devolution: The Last 3 Minutes of the Universe
- Shinkalion The Movie
- Super Robot Wars OG: Daizengar and Aussenseiter

Free update (April 20, 2022):
- Extra story chapter (six missions)
- Everyone can now get the SRX and Psybuster which were previously preorder bonuses only
- Super Robot Wars OG: Irmgart/Grungust, Van Ein

I'm down! A little less exciting for me than the previous DLC packs, but I gotta have my boys Zengar and Elzam. Real men ride each other. And more Getter is never a bad thing.
