The Villainydome: The Greater of 67 Evils

Johnny Unusual

Your Like and Folsom Prison Blues are tied. First person to break it, breaks it. My suggestion is @Ixo might want to in favour of his but if no one does it'll be decided by a coin flip. Meanwhile, Robbie Rotten puts his opponent to sleep with a sugar apple.

Match 12

First, @Torzelbaum brings us the cosmic horror of The Thing That Should Not Be by Metallica. A song of Lovecraftian horrors, this is actually their second song about Cthulhu, the first being The Kult of Ktulu from Ride the Lightning. Against the mammoth beast? Wait for it… no, really Wait For It from Hamilton via @ThornGhost. This is a song by Aaron Burr (Leslie Odom Jr) as he sees his rival Hamilton gaining traction while he feels he is being left behind and decides to bide his time, waiting for the right opportunity to turn the tables and establish his place in history.

Match 13

@Becksworth brings us a song from a Madworld. Specifically it’s You Don’t Know Me, the theme to the characters Rin Rin and Elise by Bandy Leggz. One is a kung fu lady and one is a vampire lady and I don’t think they work in tandem but they nicely share the same song. Against it is @Daikaiju’s pick I’m the Bad Guy from Wander Over Yonder. Sung by Lord Dominator where she reveals that she’s a much bigger level evil than the show’s most prominent and more comical villain Lord Hater, Dominator show’s that there’s no greater purpose in her schemes than true joyful evil and to think otherwise is folly.

Wait for the Bad Guy
Bad Guy is also a razor sharp cut against male tropes that dominate many genres.

I'm not the damsel in distress.
I'm not your girlfriend or the frightened princess.
I'm not a little bird who needs your help to fly.
Nope...
I'm the bad guy.

Aaron Burr wins the duel and it's complete domination for Lord Dominator.

Match 14

We start with Poor, Unfortunate Souls from The Little Mermaid. @Issun ’s pick, it’s Ursula’s song as she tempts Ariel into taking a very bad deal as part of a bigger plan to take over the kingdom of Atlantica. Her evil is not thickly veiled by Ariel is desperate enough to let her get taken by Ursula’s plot and great singing voice. Against it is @Aurelia ’s choice of Wayward Daughter. I’ve been warned there’s a spoiler aspect to this, coming from the Final Fantasy XIV expansion Stormblood so if you don’t want to be spoiled, play the song and don’t watch the video to learn the villain is Tsukiyomi.

Wayward Daughter –???

Match 15

Then @Violentvixen stares into the Stars with Javert (Philip Quast) from Les Miserables. Javert is a relentless detective; smart and exacting. While in many ways he might reflect more heroic detectives, he is determined to make one criminal pay for escaping, a criminal who’s crime was stealing a loaf of bread. Javert is convinced of his rightness and Stars shows him planning to continue what he thinks is making his place in the cosmic order to set things right. Against it is a villain far less complicated but just as relentless, Godzilla by Blue Oyster Cult via @Bongo. While Stars is rousing and grand Godzilla is grimy, cheeky and fun. It’s a reference to the first movie but it’s as joyful as the sillier adventures the King of the Monsters has had since after he was reinvented as a hero.

This might be my favourite match because it is two bangers with such completely different sounds. Can’t wait to see how this shakes out.

Poor Unfortunate Souls was the first song that came to mind when the rules were laid out for this dome. As for the other match, the Russell Crowe/Geoffrey Rush film solidified my impression of visual media tackling the source material, so Les Mis has always felt off to me, and BOC is rockin', so I'll go with Godzilla.

Poor Unfortunate Stars

Javert is the classic example of how a lawful neutral character can be a great villain. I’m a person also inclined to love order for its own sake, so his story has been an important caution for me that that tendency needs watching to make sure it doesn’t end up hurting people. “Stars” does a beautiful job of showing both what appeals to Javert about this way of looking at the world and where it leads him to go wrong.

I've previously described Javert in the ways you have here, but never specifically used the phrase "lawful neutral". It's perfect.

Thank you! I like the D&D alignment system more than most people seem to, so much so that I sometimes worry that I’m shoehorning it in where it doesn’t belong. I’m glad that reference to it made someone else happy, too.

Ursula casts her spell over Talking Time while Godzilla remains the king of the monsters.
Oh, and I also forgot to announce from a while back that due to a coin flip, Your Like is moving on.

Match 16

We got a match up where the characters within the narrative aren’t EVIL but sure are antagonists to the lead… and both perhaps a little foolhardy. First is my pick… which, if you don’t want spoilers for the recent Barbie movie, where the central antagonist is Ken (Ryan Gosling). The song, I’m Just Ken, has Ken dealing with the insecurity, rejection and the way he defines himself by his relationship to Barbie that causes him to overthrow Barbieland with his patriarchy. Against it is @Thornghost’s Hamilton pick What’d I Miss, as Thomas Jefferson (Daveed Diggs) returns from a very long sojourn to France only to find young upstart Hamilton has been causing trouble while he’s been gone. Turns out being away from home means you might miss some of the big stuff, Jefferson. This doesn’t stop him, though, as he happily rides off to deal with the issue of Hamilton.

I’m Just ???? - ????

What’d I Miss – Thomas Jefferson

Match 17

@Exposition Owl let’s us know Everybody’s Got the Right (Reprise) from Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins. Sung by various historical assassins, it calls back the previous song where a mysterious Proprietor gives “Everybody’s Got the Right” as a sales pitch targeting the insecure and disenfranchised and now everyone is proudly echoing his awful message presented as a hopeful, joyful tune. Meanwhile, @Daikaiju went with one of two villain songs by Spinel from Steven Universe: The Movie, where mysterious villain Spinel (Sarah Stiles) gets her memory back and explains the tragedy and cruel betrayal that spawned her toxicity that built up over literal millennia. Drift Away is a much sadder song than our usual villain fare and is definitely one of the songs that stuck with me from the movie.
