Mogri's guess is close enough for jazz and I'm out of good clues. It's Ravenloft: Stone Prophet!
Explanations below:
1. Turn around and get cooked
If you're the type of person who, say, played Metroid and decided to always turn around and go that way in games, doing so at the starting spot will murder you dead. Do what the zombie told you!
2. I was told there would be dragons...
Like most old DnD games, it's a low-level campaign with nary a dragon to be found (lots of snakes though).
3. Where are the Thundercats when you need them?
The only characters I can think of who fight mummies like, all the time.
4. Nonstandard body types
Recruitable characters include a Wemic (lion centaur) and a desert troll.
5. Less spooky than the first one
This is the second Ravenloft game. The first took place in... you know... Ravenloft. It was dark and misty and full of Draculae and wargs.
6. Hope you brought a cleric!
For real. There are no recruitable clerics in the game, and you will die of thirst without Create Water.
7. The sooner we get this wrapped up, the sooner we can go home
You're trapped in another world and need to break a mummy's curse to escape back to generic DnD land.
8. The gold(box)en age is over, but we keep trying
This and its peers (Strahd's possession and the Forgotten Realms-set Menzoberranzan) came several years after the beloved "gold box" games and before the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale renaissance.
9. A blob with four faces
The best-looking and least-archaic of the DnD blobbers I played like mad 25 years ago. Maximum party size is, of course, four.
10. No dragons *and* no corvids? Textbook false advertising
This is a desperation clue because everyone was guessing much better games. But for real, where all the ravens in the loft?
Anyway. I hope people check this game out! It almost holds up in modern times. Highly recommend using the hintbook (included in the GoG release) if anyone tries it out. It came with similar games and the Dark Sun games back in the day, too. Love weird old DnD settings.
You're up, Mogri!
