They kind of fill the Guardian role in this game where you have a horrible enemy that pursues you and makes your life hell that later on you can turn around and clown on, but I will say they don't quite fill that role as well or as satisfyingly as the guardians did.

Also, using my patented method, I found that if you just turned and ran the fuck away, they would eventually pop and drop some loot (and no followup enemy!)

Finished this today. I have to say up front that all of my critical judgment goes right out the window when I’m playing any Zelda game—I am a fanboy about this series, plain and simple. There’s a reason my handle is “Exposition Owl” and not just “Lore Dump.” With that said, I loved this game. So very much. When the game was setting up the final stage of the final battle, and Ganondorf tore the stone out of his forehead and started talking about “giving up his body and mind” in order to win, my first thought was “No, he can’t be doing what I think he’s doing.” And then he did exactly what I thought he was going. The whole Demon Dragon setpiece was an incredible capstone to the game.

My one slightly awkward experience came out of my own choices: I was determined to finish every possible side quest before entering the endgame, but I thought the trigger for the endgame was earlier than it was, so I ended up meeting Mineru and her construct before the main quest sequence that tells you to look for her. I loved the whole “getting the Master Sword” sequence even as I experienced it, but it seemed like it would have been even cooler if I had visited Dragon’s Head Island for the first time after clearing up the thunderstorm rather than before.
Anyway. I can’t wait to play whatever DLC Nintendo might be planning for TotK. In the meantime, on to Pikmin 4!

Right now, I’m like seven hearts and one temple in, so I’m very much still in the SHIT SHIT FUCK DON’T LET IT GET ME stage of my first playthrough. I DID discover they can be frozen, though, which helps with the not letting them get me. I look forward to putting on my big boy pants with these things.

oh god, the first time i saw the gloom hands i was just ambiently walking through Hyrule and i damn near soiled myself with fear while running as fast as i could and climbing up a pillar. the hands reached for me but i was juuuuust out of reach, and it was fucking terrifying. Once i figured out how to fight them it became way easier, but even now, when the sky starts changing and their music comes on i still have a momentary panic flashback to that first encounter. real powerful organic story moment there =)

Gloom Hands are damn terrifying. My first enemy encounter on the surface was an Evermeer. Once you know how to deal with them it's no big deal, but it was damn unsettling to be attacked by a freaking tree.

I never seemed to have an axe onhand so those damn trees annoyed me (I also ran away from them most of the time). I had to use fire arrows, which was reliable but slow.

Evermeans are one of the reasons why I always have some kinda crafted axe onhand. Don't Starve taught me not to underestimate the potential dangers of killer foliage.

Anyway, if you don't wanna just glue a flat stone to a stick, you can make really good axes from the higher tier boss bokoblin horns.

A strong sword works, too! I think what really matters is to use a weapon that does slashing damage rather than bludgeoning damage.

Get out of reach of tree. Lob fire seed at it by hand. Wait 10 seconds. Repeat once. Probably laugh throughout the whole thing.

I cleaned up that one village overrun by "pirates". I have a hard time believing a bunch of bokoblins could make complex structures like giant boats, but that's a dumb nitpick. I liked that whole side quest. I just wish more games - including this one - had more meaningful city building minigames. Rebuilding that town was completely trivial. It would be fun if you had more complicated systems along the lines of a city manager where you had to collect more than 15 wood to make a whole town. Maybe plan out expansions, customize the streets/buildings, manage city finances, etc. I know that isn't what this game was ever wanting or trying to do, but I just like that stuff a lot in games and wish there was more of it. So any time I see something like this, it always leaves me craving more and feeling disappointed.

I'm now extremely deep into this game.

It took me FOREVER to realize that the map of the underword is kind of an inverted version of hyrule. All the valleys there are mountains, rivers are now impassable walls ect.

I've never been much about fashion but the gloom armor is fucking sick.

You could say it's a literal dark world.

I SEE WHATCHU DID THERE, NINTY

Im also working my way through. Finally beat the last of the four big temples. I’ve almost done every shrine. Finished what I needed in order to grab the master sword. I could probably rush the ending but I still have to finish exploring the depths, then do a side quest roundup.

I’ve never played a game of this nature (big, long, open world) quite this way before, where I only play a few hours at a time over a long period of time. I find myself not getting as much open world fatigue, but I’m still rather impatient. I really wanna move onto other games already lol.

I'm three temples in myself! I'm really enjoying how you can actively help the people of each region get things back in order after clearing out their respective phenomena, like helping rebuild the bridge to Rito Village (even if it's just "get me 30 pieces of wood"), things like that.

And I only learned this through a loading screen tip, but evidently the gloom hand things are officially labeled as Gloom Spawn.

Welp. I’ve done just about everything in this game besides get a handful of remaining outfits, an assortment of side quests, and beaten ganondorf. My time with TotK is drawing to a close.

I have a few thoughts about this game’s story, but I’ll wait until I finish it until I divulge them.

Cleared at 160 hours.

Loved the ending.

As soon as Gannondorf was defeated and pulled out the stone, I knew exactly what was going to happen with the two dragons, but I still loved it. The idea of poor Zelda turning into a dragon is just so good on its own, with plenty of pathos, the game didn't need another plot twist after that.

So finally months later I'm getting around to Zelda-ing and have started this game.

I expect that much like BotW I'll face some severe choice paralysis so could I get some no spoilery recommendations of things to look out for, or places I should check out, or otherwise things that would make my life easier that otherwise aren't super obvious?

So far I've clear tutorial island, the bits following that, and have activated two towers and a bunch of shrines.

Seriously though, do Robbie's quests as soon as possible.

Yes, absolutely. And he'll give you something at a fairly early quest, keep working with him (and maybe Purah, I forget) to get a specific capability that is better to unlock earlier in the game. I can definitely be more specific but don't want to give more spoilers.

So after I unlocked my second tower I was paragliding down to my horse (appreciate that the game gave me my horses from my BotW save, nice touch there) and I saw one of those glowing rabbit things, so I followed it into its cave so I could destroy the bubble frog and get the crystal which seems to be a new collectable.

Inside the cave I see a shrine, and I think "Neat'. Then I see some gloom on the ground and I think "Oh I wonder if there's a chasm to the Depths in here?"

Then I see them and then I am dead.

After I reload I make a beeline for the shrine to complete it, then I noped right out of there.

To alleviate choice paralysis: head northwest first and generally prioritize the main quest.

The first is always the worst. Caves more so, because you don't get the atmospheric warnings you would in the open.

Your next project, let us know when the switch flips in your head.

In the meantime, get to high ground and keep some bombs handy.

I stumbled upon that one cave myself without having encountered the hands before and was like "ahahaaaa not dealing with nightmare hands" and managed to scramble out of the danger zone to the shrine.

The one feather in my cap regarding ToTK is that I never died to those things. That may have been sheer stubbornness on my part.

"I refuse!"
bomb arrows
"To lose!"
Scarf food, climb something
