So finally months later I'm getting around to Zelda-ing and have started this game.

I expect that much like BotW I'll face some severe choice paralysis so could I get some no spoilery recommendations of things to look out for, or places I should check out, or otherwise things that would make my life easier that otherwise aren't super obvious?

So far I've clear tutorial island, the bits following that, and have activated two towers and a bunch of shrines.
If you see a dark pit into the earth JUMP INTO THAT SHIT IMMEDIATELY because it's cool and awesome down there.

Real talk, The depths are interesting but it is hostile geography. Keep an eye out for bomb plants and muddle buds. And know when to YEET.

Been making steady progress and also not a lot as I just have kind of spent a lot of time doing just about everything but the main questline, but my playthrough of BotW went much the same way. So I guess the highlights:

-I did do the Rito region dungeon and I'm glad I did, the extra power that provided has been super useful.
-Got Autobuild and have explored maybe 20-25% of the Depths so far.
-Encountered two more Gloom Hands and ran like the wind from both. I expect these things drop unique materials and as such I may want to hunt them someday for them, but it is not this day!
-I've gotten an assortment of armor pieces, notably the entire Barbarian set, the Zonai legs, the Glider hat and chest, tunic of Twilight, cap of Wind (I can look like a mismatched Link!) and the Fierce Diety boots.
-Right now I have two full batteries and an extra 1/3rd, is it me or is the battery enhancement a REALLY annoying grind?
-While I was exploring the northeastern Depths I came across the Wind Temple boss just... flying around. So I killed it and got 100 crystallized charges and a jawbone which made for a nice weapon enhancement.
-I've met 3 of the 4 great faeries, and joined the local newspaper and so far have 9 stories from the stables complete. Considering the reward, I'm tempted to hunt out the remainder of those.

So far this game really feels like the natural evolution of the 'playground' feel that BotW eventually became, like the developers were watching videos of all the crazy stuff players were doing with that much more limited system and said to themselves "Screw it, let's just go all in on THAT." I definitely find myself missing infinite bombs, and instant ice platforms, but I'm not going to lie, Ultrahand and Autobuild are SUPER rad.

Batteries are kind of annoying in that you rarely need more than a couple of them, but then in some cases you want to have as many as possible

Those bosses chilling in the depth make it less of a grind since they drop enough for a full battery and respawn just like anyone else during a blood moon.

I thought the battery drop only happened the first time you beat em though? After that you just got their fusion material. Because otherwise that's totally busted.
 
If you explore the depths fully, you’ll be swimming in batteries. Which makes the game very easy and fun. Because then you can just make a wind cycle and fly to wherever you want to go, bringing the difficulty of most things down to trivial if you so desire

The wind cycle is cool and all but I dearly miss the master cycle.

Yeah, I empathize with that. But I'm tryna get all the shrines/light roots ASAP, I ain't got time for no funny business. To each their own I guess.

Ah see, that's the thing. This is pretty damn hard for some people! Like me! I get to the end of a game and my brain goes "done with that now, it has been Completed," and even if I love it, it's very difficult to keep playing it until the "I should replay that" feeling arises. To the extent that I put off final bosses in games I'm enjoying because I know I'll quit if I beat them.

I thought the depths were creepy and neat when I first found them, and I found quite a few darkroots and finished the yiga quest, but I didn't think what was down there was interesting enough to build up my battery too much. Oh well.

I am normally like you. When I beat the game, I had already logged 180+ hours into it, and also 100%'d the shrines and roots, so I had extra reasons to not pick it back up again.

Guess what I did right after beating the game? I replayed the ending at least 20 times

I'm sure it's a ymmv thing like always, but if you're anything like me, you'll find excuses to keep coming back even if you literally run out of things to do.
 
The ending is certainly a TON of fun. I do wish it threw in more stronger enemy variants though, I ran into it with all kinds of wild weapon setups hoping to see a few Lynels and other beefy stuff like hinoxes that would chew through durability.

And TotK is done. Well, as done as I'll be doing. The game doesn't give me an in-game time that I can find but my Switch profile page says I've put 115 or more hours into it. I finished all the regions, got every shrine, every lightroot, every unique piece of armor, and vastly, vastly over prepared for the final boss. I went in to the final showdown with like a dozen full recovery items, multiple attack up +3 dishes and a few gloom recovery as well for good measure and hardly needed a fraction of it. Just clowned on the final boss the whole time.

Absolutely stellar game. Definitely an improvement over BotW, though there's still some things about the classic formula I miss (the 'dungeons' here, while certainly better than the Divine Beasts, still only barely qualify as Zelda dungeons). However it does seem to be the ideal version of what BotW was trying to be. Don't really need another one like this, at least not for a couple console generations at least. But still, I'm glad they went back to this Hyrule and just decided to go ham on everything.

I'm still a bit unclear on how TotK further messes with the already messy Zelda timeline. And I know that obsessing over it is a fool's errand, but the ending is fresh in my mind and I'm just in the mood to be a big nerd and overthink things so overall story spoilers:
Ok so the main Zelda timeline splits into three branches after Ocarina, I think that's the case last I checked, and all of them converge at the end and are followed by Breath of the Wild. But then in Tears of the Kingdom Zelda travels back 10000 years to Hyrule's founding and while she's there Ganondorf is encountered and sealed away until re-emerging during the Calamity 100 years before BotW. So... how does this work? There's one flashback scene that really calls back to that one scene in Ocarina where Ganondorf is kneeling to the king but that flashback isn't a remake of the Ocarina story, but WHEN is it exactly? How did Ganondorf get sealed away immediately after Hyrule's founding to only re-emerge at the very END of the timeline?

Is it that after this particular Ganondorf was sealed away he still reincarnated during the events of all the other games, so technically there were two Ganondorfs on Hyrule at the same time (and technically two Zeldas I guess)? That would fit, but it's kind of silly.

Another posibility that makes sense is that the point Zelda traveled back to is still AFTER the branching timelines converged, so it's not that Rauru founded Hyrule, but re-founded it. Then Hyrule had a long 10000 years Ganon-free before his power finally started to leak out in the Calamity. Of course that's a long-ass time for the world to not really change a whole lot, but whatever.

However it's all supposed to shake out (and maybe we'll get official confirmation someday) I suppose we're not really supposed to think too hard about the goddamn Zelda timeline.

The only REAL lingering question I have is why did Link not once throughout the entire game cut his nails on his gross goat arm?
