The All-New TT: Television Time Mini Reviews

I'm liking Rings of Power S2 as well. It is a little too spread out, maybe. You've got 4 or 5 ongoing plotlines and while they related to each other in the broadest way, there is very little crossover between most of them. But I like all of the stories. I've got enough Tolkien knowledge to know the shape of things, but not enough to know if/when they are getting details wrong.

I've been watching The Bear and it's really good. Deserves all the hype imo. What really sets it apart as a dramedy is how emotionally intelligent the characters are written. Like they apologize to each other and own up to their behavior? It's crazy how rare that is in TV shows.

I enjoyed Tokyo Vice season 1 well enough, it kept me interested with its twists and turns and a bit of the "foreigner in Japan" nostalgia, but for some reason I've stalled out halfway through season 2. It got more...televisiony. Like the plotting and characterization is a bit more forced and cliched all-around. I want to go back and finish it but I'm not sure when I'll actually be in the mood.

Alan Partridge looks actively attractive with a beard and I can't help finding this disconcerting.

...oh this is the TV thread, isn't it.
Not sure we even have a radio thread?

We got through the two seasons of Resident Alien that are on Netflix and enjoyed it enough that we immediately plunked down twenty bucks for season three (since I don't think I have any already-subscribed way to get new SyFy shows). It's definitely scratching that itch of a show where a bunch of horribly flawed people (and, uh, not-people) ultimately end up being wholesome and supportive. And ofc Alan Tudyk is great.

It makes me really hungry as well. Everything looks really good. Well, except for the pizza.

Over the weekend I started a horror series on MGM+ called, puzzlingly, From. That's it. That's the whole title. Apparently it shares some creative DNA with LOST, which I never watched, and is beginning its third season. The premise: There is a secluded town in rural America that traps anyone who wanders into it (if you try to leave, the road just loops back around to the entrance.) After sundown, creatures that appear human emerge from the forest and stalk the town, horrifically murdering anyone caught outdoors. The "residents" (prisoners, really) of the town, some of whom have been there for years, have formed their own insular society, and we follow the POV of a so far seemingly-normal family who take a wrong turn and become the new neighbors.

The characters are varied and interesting enough, and while I don't know any of the actors some of them are quite good. Brief but effective moments of shocking gore are used to emphasize the threat, and there have been some good jumpscares on top of the overarching sense of dread. The LOST connection, from reputation, makes me a little wary of the series eventually disappearing up its own ass, but three episodes in I'm having a good time. I'll keep y'all updated.

Yeah we watched From (the first two season) recently and it was solid stuff. Most of the actors are people I don't know, but Harold Perrineau is pretty famous. I'm not so worried about the LOST connection without Abrams or Lindelof involved; some of the producers are the same, but apart from Perrineau there aren't many other connections, and the creative team is different.

LOST itself was pretty good for most of its run, too. It had the "can't stick the landing" Abrams problem, mostly.

Oh okay, he was in the the Matrix sequels, so it turns out I do know him after all. He's definitely one of the standouts here in terms of acting and screen presence; the woman who plays Donna is also really good. I'm excited to watch more!

After a swift rebuke of Mob, I'm back to another strange anime: Kaguya. I watch it dubbed (like all shows), but I really love the dubbed narrator- he gives so much flair and pomp to the show. I like the comedic elements a lot, but the overly dramatic elements at the end of the first season lost me. And I really couldn't care for Ishigami or Hayasaka at all.

Even still, I'm really interested for what the second season has in show. It's far better than Komi, but still worse than Saiki, at least in terms of writing. It ridiculously outstrips both in terms of animation and music.

So somehow the first time I heard of the fact the Prime is doing some kind of video game anthology animated series is when LBD posted someone's tweet looking the Mega Man design they're going with. I though, huh, if Mega Man is in it, it must be using a bunch of iconic characters and properties, let's see which it's.....

...... huh. I guess that's a Warhammer space marine over on the right and probably Kratos a couple in from there, but unless that's somewhat off-model Gordan Freeman next to Megs I got absolutely nothin' on the entire rest of the lineup. Buncha generic action and fantasy characters as far as my knowledge goes. I'm sure this is leftovers after taking out of consideration all the IPs owned by other big media conglomerates that are Prime competitors, but even so, weird collection.

I bet most of them were deals with companies who were willing to put up some funding for their game to be there.

I'm kinda curious what a Spelunky episode would be honestly, that could be fun. My worry is that to make it "adult" it becomes super gory or something.
