Talking about romhacks!

That's great, some stuff to check out there! I'll mention the SA1 romhacks - people are adding SA1 (or FastROM) support to SNES games. The SA1 was a coprocessor that hugely improved the SNES's capabilities, meaning slowdown in the modded games (which include Axelay, Contra III, Gradius and Race Drivin') is much better or entirely gone.

In the case of games like Race Drivin' the effect is downright transformational. 4 FPS is now 30 FPS!

did i do all of that?

I really enjoyed Pokemon Perfect Crystal (2020), but that's basically just Crystal tweaked to have all 251 Pokemon catchable in it, among a few other tweaks. Not sure if that's what you're looking for, or a completely new game, the latter of which I'm kinda interested in, too, because yeah... All the ones I've glanced at have had just dumb bullshit in it.

Can anyone recommend a good Pokémon ROMhack? I hear Crystal Clear is the gold standard, but so many of them just have their own moronic edgelord story injected in and I don't like that.
Pokemon Gold and SIlver 97 Reforged is great. I haven't got far enough in Pokemon Prism to talk about the story, but it's a technical marvel with abilities and the physical/ special split on the GBC. Pokemon Delta Emerald is Emerald but brought more up to modern standards (so up to Generation VII pokemon, Mega evolution).

Vitor's SA-1 hacks are so good. After Gradius III and Contra III came out, I did a video about them (shout-outs to @MCBanjoMike for helping capture the Contra footage) and show side-by-side just what a difference they make.

Radical Red is Fire Red with gen 8 mons and mechanics. It's a difficulty hack, but the difficulty is in the level cap and competitive competition, not in having to grind your way to victory. There's also a bunch of rebalancing, to the point where I haven't found anything truly useless. (Ledian was a key contributor for at least one battle!)

The plot is mostly unchanged, although gym order is fixed as an artifact of the level gating, and there are a couple of Team Rocket recurring characters that weren't in the original. It's pretty unobtrusive as hacks go.

It also has a built-in randomizer, if you're into that.

Hot off the presses! The Resident Evil TRUE Director's Cut.

RetroRGB said:
  • The original uncut FMVs from the Japanese version, alongside the full-color opening scene from the French and German Director’s Cut release.
  • Replacing the orchestrated (and controversial) BGM with the one present in both the original release and the first Director’s Cut print.
  • Use the Mansion’s Bathroom from the 01/31/1996 Beta version, which allows you to grab an extra Clip after unplugging the water in Jill’s scenario.
  • Planned features include memo backgrounds that were present in the Japanese releases, the text in the Mansion’s right stairwell, and more.

I know that the composer is something of a dishonest hack but 😞

The Director's Cut version of the music is unintentionally hilarious so keep it out of my deadly serious videogame about zombies and giant spiders plz

I'm not sure if that's better, per se, but at least it's not a choir of MIDI trombones.

What's Shenmue?
FF1: DoS - Vancian Magic System restores the spell charge system to the GBA version of Final Fantasy I. This may be somewhat niche, what with Origins and all, but if you otherwise prefer Dawn of Souls (as I do), then this is quite nice.

The theory I like on the basement theme is that it was intended to be played with a different instrument:

When you remember the composer (stated composer, etc etc, everybody knows the story) faked his deafness as a Beethoven bit this is especially funny. He must have known they fucked it up putting it into the game, right? And he couldn't say anything without unraveling his whole scam?

It's certainly more in line with the rest of the series that way, but I have to say I like the Metroid 2-y ness of the unfixed version too much to acknowledge this

That's hugely better and does make some sense, particularly with its origin being as it is.

The original is still better, but at least the farty abomination gave us an incredible story

I haven't dug into this too much, but today I came across a hack for Secret of Mana called "Secret of Mana Turbo." It looks like it started out with this specific focus:

The primary gameplay change for which it's titled "Turbo" is the complete removal of the game's stamina system for attacks (and running).

Core "Turbo" Features:
- Removes stamina (attacking / running / blocking)
- Streamlines weapon charging UI
- Removes weapon charging klaxon
- Stairs don't prevent running (but still slow you)

but now has turned into a pretty giant hack compilation project with tons of customization options. Apparently the best source of documentation for this is inside the .exe patcher program itself, which is why I haven't looked at it yet since I'm not on a Windows machine right now.

That's an interesting idea, but the Open-World randomizer for Secret of Mana that's in progress is even more intriguing.
