on February 19:

This is a good series of licensed video games. You won't get much out of them if you've never watched the source material, but they've got powerful Paper Mario vibes. Mobile-exclusive "Steven Universe: Attach the Light" was a pretty simplistic dungeon crawler with timed hits, but its sequel, "Save the Light," which is on PC and all major consoles, was a drastic expansion with a full party system, fusion mechanic, environmental puzzles, etc., so I've been wanting to play the third one for some time. Sadly, it was a timed exclusive on Apple Arcade. Does anybody even have Apple Arcade?

No and there's a handful of games I would be playing right away if they weren't locked behind what feels like _another_ subscription. I'd rather wait em out.

I had Apple Arcade and held onto it specifically in order to play this game. It’s good! It’s more in line with the first game, which is wise, as while the second game is my favorite of the three, it’s more ambitious than this developer can really handle.

UtL’s story is the most interesting from a fan perspective, as it shows a canon glimpse of the period between the end of the first series and the movie. It shows a side of the post-show universe that Future barely touched on, mainly that villains still exist and will always exist. More specifically, the dissolution of the Diamond Authority leads to splinter empires still dedicated to conquering worlds and exploiting Gems.

I am extremely happy that this game won’t disappear into an Apple Arcade-shaped void. I imagine piracy will be the only way to play it in the far future, but at least it will still exist.

Beyond the existence of the service itself, Apple seems to require the publishers to do all their own marketing.

Do you need to have played the first two to get into this one? I love Steven Universe but the other games were gated off from me.

The first one has a very simple storyline which the second one summarizes very efficiently during its setup; there's this gem weapon called the Prism which creates holographic drone armies which turns out to be a sentient being whom Steven convinces that it doesn't have to create holographic drone armies if it doesn't want to, and they become friends, which is pretty on brand. I don't know how much the third one refers to the second one, because I haven't played it, but I would expect something similar.

There is a weapon which does not want to be a weapon and Gems which force it to be a weapon anyway. One of those Gems is named Hessionite, who was bad but is not bad anymore. You can probably guess why.

That’s kind of the extent of it. I think you’d be fine to jump in here.

EDIT: Also make sure you finish the original show first.

"Attack the Light" takes place early in season 1. "Save the Light" takes place where Octo said. "Unleash the Light" takes place during the timeskip between the series proper and the epilogue Steven Universe Future.
