Saw that 512GB reservations are being process at a weekly rate of about 1:30 on the rtReserveTime, so I'm fully expecting the 5/2 estimation the reservation calculator gave me to be right on target at this point.

No emails for me today. The 512GB queue went from 16:00 after go-live to a reported 17:41. My time of 18:20's probably enough to make it in the next batch, or definitely the next one.

Just a warning for those about to get their Decks or already have one: don't do a SteamOS update from the Desktop mode. It may prompt you on that side, but you'll end up in a boot loop if you do. You can recover it with their recovery image so long as you have a USB-C hub/flash drive. I used Rufus to make the drive and then did a SteamOS reinstall, and everything still seems intact. I figured I'd have at least one big derp moment with this device, haha.

Jesus, what?! I haven't done an update via desktop mode, but I guess I never will. What a nightmare.

That's what I get for not reading the patch notes, haha. Hopefully they come up with a way that if you do update through that method, it kicks it over to Gaming mode to truly apply the needed updates.

Mine too! Shame it probably won’t arrive until after I leave for a work trip next week, but it’ll give me something to mess around with when I get back.

Rock on! More people to share our experiences with.

Speaking of experiences, apparently Lutris now works (most of the time). I managed to use it to install Zwei: The Ilvard Insurrection and Trails in the Sky SC, and both worked properly (or mostly so, intro video in Zwei was slow) compared to installing via Heroic. I also used it to get Origin on there and run Mass Effect: Andromeda, which seems to perform really well.

I'm not sure if this is the right thread for it think I think it's a game by game thing, but Wasteland 3 does not let you take cloud saves between platforms (i.e., Steam Deck to my Windows PC and vice versa). Which sucks because Wasteland 2 does just fine! So now it's Steam Deck only, which is annoying for when the TV is free! God dangit!

Finally! I'm glad more people are getting this thing around here. PSA: only update in gaming mode, not desktop mode!

Note, I saw that they are aware of the issue and working on a patch, but that does show you that testers are expecting people to be in game mode for the most part and only using desktop mode to get something configured then hopping back.

Haha, don't they know I'm a tinkerer? 🤪

But yes, that's my primary use case - get something set up correctly in desktop mode for use in game mode. But I figured it wouldn't prompt me for an update if it wasn't safe, but that'll show me. I'd very much recommend getting a USB-C hub with HDMI in the event that you want to hook up a flash drive or pipe out to a TV/monitor. Although the resolution stuff is still quite wonky on that front in game mode - hopefully they'll iron that out soon.

Kazin

(he/him)
It's my biggest complaint about the Deck at the moment, the resolution while docked issue. The only TV I'd want to hook the Deck up to is a 4K TV, and the Deck just doesn't play nice with that resolution, and there's no way to lower it to 1080, which is super dumb and I'm honestly surprised they haven't fixed it yet.

Sarge

Yeah, same here. I only hook into a 4K set. Although I could see a use case hooking to a 1080p monitor, but I don't think it handles that well, either. Haven't tried yet, though.

That reminds me, would you have a recommendation for a good Bluetooth keyboard and mouse? I'm tired of swapping my wireless Logitech dongle back and forth, and I figure Bluetooth makes more sense than a standard wireless.

Kazin

(he/him)
No recommendation for "good" ones, but I bought a cheapo Logitech bluetooth mouse and have an old Amazon Basics bluetooth keyboard which work very well with the Deck. The bluetooth mouse is what I've been using for all the CRPGs I've been playing. Once paired, the Deck will detect them a second or two after waking it from sleep.

So I booted up PCSX2 for the first time in a while, and it stopped booting any ISO I threw at it - turns out an update borked the emulator for Steam Deck. You can rollback the version by following these directions, pasted here for ease of access:
  1. Open Konsole and put a password with the command: passwd (When you set the password, what you type is not displayed, this is normal, for privacy).
  2. Command List: flatpak remote-info --log flathub net.pcsx2.PCSX2
  3. Install old working version (in this point, this ask for the first step password): sudo flatpak update --commit=84bdc9896bb9e5b9c47024d899fdec7bd1243d2724359b119f64970bbf96ee29 net.pcsx2.PCSX2

After doing this, I could boot up games fine. In the meantime, don't allow PCSX2 to update via the Discover app in Desktop mode.

So what resources are all you cool cats using to find all this stuff to run and fiddle with for the Steamdeck? My first thought would be the subreddit Kazin linked, but are there other kinds of "knowledge bases" around for this?

I finally got my e-mail today, about which I am very happy and excited. That said, check out this bullshit:

I sure don't recall anything ever mentioning a $120 import fee. You would think that would be factored into the price.

How long did it take other people to go from purchasing to shipping? Mine is still in the shipping soon status...

Holy... that's like a hundred bucks! Ridiculous!

My email came in on the Monday, and it was shipped out on the Wednesday, so it takes a couple days. I suppose it probably depends on where you live, though (I'm only like a state and a half away from where they're shipping these out in Illinois).

The PCSX2 thing should be fixed now. The last update I installed has mine able to boot again.

Also, the Steam Deck has absolutely made me into one of those people who religiously check the CAG twitter account and wishlist everything - I've spent like $150 on games on Steam since I got my Deck. I love this thing but I'm buying too much shit lol
