I'm in the hype quadrant of the sonic cycle and I will never leave

Rolling around at the speed of sound, in a giant, open-world setting does sound pretty fun to me.

We've had Sonic Galaxy and that sadly didn't go as well as it could've done. Here's hoping Sonic of the Wild is rather better.

Ian Flynn getting the writing gig is definitely cool.

They seem like pretty mismatched concepts to me. The 3D Sonic games have always been at their best when focused on short set-piece levels as a test of performance and reflexes. Their biggest problem has always been scope creep and trying to branch out past that.

I’d love to be wrong, though, and it would be fun to have a Sonic game try to branch out and succeed. They’ve just never managed to do that correctly before, and the trailer is cribbing so thoroughly from BOTW that it just feels like they’re trying to shove Sonic into industry trends.

I really need to see more of the actual gameplay part of the game. Like, I know this has big pretty fields and forests but so do a whole bunch of countless other open world games and indie things.

I want to see what Sonic can do in them to mix things up, not just that they are there.

I mainly wanted to quote that goofy song, I never thought for more than a second about "running through endless fields and woods would be neat". You are probably right, when I think about it a bit more, I can only imagine it as a sort of walking simulator, where you run through endless fields that have not much happening in them. Maybe you could use the momentum to climb towers and stuff?

Dunno, I can imagine that there is a really cool game in there. Not having played any 3D Sonic, aside from the two Adventures, I can't even speak about how well the others are made (but I guess their bad reputation isn't without cause). In the end, it's more Sonic, and I like Sonic, so I'm curious to learn more. And if you are right, we have a new, weird dumpster fire to look at. If nothing else, it should be interesting.

I'm intrigued whether they can pull this off. Going fast seems to be at odds with exploring a large open world - if you need to stop to wonder at some small detail, doesn't that kill all the momentum? Are you going to be screeching to a halt all the time? Are there going to be highways in Fantasy Island?

Thinking on it, the best case scenario is probably a pretty hub world with shrines that act as short platforming challenges.

I don't expect it to be good, but I do agree that the idea of running around Hyrule really fast sounds like fun.

I mean, honestly, if it's like the Sonic version of Forza Horizon with more items and jumping, then I think it works.

Honestly, seeing the Zelda level in that game did more to make me want to play it than anything else.

Everything else in the game discouraged this line of thoughr

This looks fun to me? I mean, it feels a bit like an early 3D game, with levels that are a bit too empty, but I really like something about what I see here.
This is from Sonic Lost World, not Sonic Frontiers. It's a Nintendo-exclusive Zelda level. RT-55J is goofing.

Oh, I know. Well, I knew that it's not from Frontiers, but I assumed it was some weird mod from a fan, or something. Nice to know that it's from the actual game.

The one thing I kept thinking while watching that trailer is “they totally got Yoko Shimomura to do the soundtrack for this, huh?”

So previews have been a lot more positive than the initial reveals, with most articles expressing cautious optimism about the project. They also confirm that the initial reveal used an older, shittier build because lol Sonic Team

Yeah, I'm feeling more optimistic about it. Not like, hyped, but more like "I think this will grow on me once I start messing around with it."

SO THIS GAME IS WEIRD.

The breath of the wild analogy isn't quite apt, I would say it's more of a Mario Odyssey vibe. Big huge areas to run around in with loads of doodads to pick up, figuring out how you're gonna get there is 90% of the fun.

And it is fun! Like, 2 hours in I'm definitely having a good time.

I'm playing it on the switch, and it's very obvious that this game would be PRETTIER on other consoles or on a beefy PC, but what's here is FUKIN PRETTY even on this meager system, and I'm having a good time.

Sonic's voice sounds all wrong. I think they wanted to make him sound slightly more mature but it just feels off. IDK.

Big huge stupid post when I've played far enough to make one.

OKAY I'VE DUMPED A BUNCH MORE HOURS INTO IT.

Sonic's voice still feels wrong and dumb.

Sonic's writing has always been wildly inconsistent, but I gotta say I was not prepared for Amy Rose, to bring up the horror of consciousness without sensation.
