It was better, but still not enough to keep my interest. And I seem to remember a boss that was just unnecessarily boobtacular or something? I just remember it being the breaking point for my tolerance of how the game portrays women and I was still bored a third to half of my playtime so moved on.

So I've done a playthrough of this both in Creation Mode and a New Game + run of Vengeance Mode. I adore the gameplay of SMTV, from the exploration to the battles to the demon summoning. The story is bland but fine (if anything, the two endings I've seen so far have been underwhelmingly short, though - chaos ending in Creation and whatever the ending is called where you side with Yoko in Vengeance Mode). I'm 100% behind everyone who hates Masayuki Doi's new demon designs though now. Every female demon has to be just a sexy woman. Even if they've got like their head cut in half and a new demon head has sprouted out of their neck while their old head hangs grossly off to the sides, they've still got a fuckin bikini on. The Qadistu demons in particular were pretty bad about this.

I had a good time with SMTV and am probably going to play through Creation mode at least one more time to get a different ending (and because a NG+ playthrough is fast when you carry over all your levels and stuff), but I really hope for SMTVI they get a new artist. I know they won't but SMTV has fully put me off Doi at this point.
