September 2023 New Games Thread

Violentvixen

(She/Her)
Thread concept:
The basic idea is to list new games that you are interested in, as well as games you are potentially curious about or want to give wider attention to. You can briefly describe them or ask other people to help fill you in. The hope is that regular threads like these can act as a collective filter/discovery mechanism to help people decide what is worth checking out.

"New games" means any new title that is being released or ported this month in any capacity (not "backlogs/what you are playing this month"). The angle here is sharing your anticipation and promoting game discovery (as opposed to sharing comments about a first playthrough in progress - that belongs elsewhere).
  • If you want a handy list that covers most of the major upcoming games of the month, here's a few text lists of upcoming games:
Here are the subscription service lists for this month:

Games with Gold
  • Is no more! It'll be called Gamepass core starting September 14th with a set library of games.
Gamepass
  • Gris – September 5 (Console, PC, Cloud)
  • Starfield – September 6 (Console, PC, Cloud) (there's an early access thing starting Sep 1st but I think you need to preorder something)
  • Lies of P – September 19 (Console, PC)
  • Party Animals – September 20 (Console, PC)
  • Payday 3 – September 21 (Console, PC, Cloud)
  • Cocoon – September 29 (Console, PC)
PS+
  • Sea of Stars
  • Saint's Row
  • More TBD
Feel free to post other lists or list videos that you find useful.
If there is already a thread on TT about a game, please add a link to it.

Final request: If you are the first person to mention a game please provide (at minimum) a short sentence description. (If it is a very big AAA release though, then don't worry about it.) This is a good convention that makes the thread more useful as a discovery mechanism, and especially helps out anyone who doesn't follow the news as closely as you.

Gris is fantastic, beautiful and everyone who has Gamepass should play it. I think it was under 5 hours too which is nice.

Mineko's Night Market comes to Switch on the 26th. It's not a day one for me as I want to see reviews but looks cute and fun. It's a shop owner/dungeon crawler game (do those have a genre name?) but with a lot of town building and interaction stuff too.

I still haven't played Sonic Frontiers but have heard good things. And sounds like there's a big free update on the 28th that adds a lot of content. Trailer for the update is here and the Sonic Frontiers thread is here.

Ou is an interesting looking sidescroller and you also throw post-it notes that things? Honestly I just thought it looked cool and have wishlisted it, I know nothing about it. The trailer says a 2021 release but comes out on Steam and Switch September 1st, although Switch might be Japan only.

Girl Genius Adventures in Castle Heterodyne comes out on Steam on the 5th. I liked the comic but it moves so slow I tend to just log in every six months or so to see what's going on. But I like the characters and this has a demo.

Overall I'm probably not actually buying anything this month but several neat things to watch.

OU is on track for a release on August 31 on the US eShop. I even did an Animal Crossing for it.
OU is an adventure game where a kid with no shoes and an opossum on fire explore a surreal world.

As for the Starfield thing, I believe the early release is for those who bought the Premium Edition or said upgrade to that. Will give it a try once it hits Game Pass proper on the 5th.

Just glancing at the eShop list today reveals a fair few things that make me go "Oooooh boooooy"

30XX is the sequel to 20XX, a Roguelite Mega Man game; this one looks much nicer, but I heard it's also less fun. But also less obnoxiously full of death-holes. So... I think I'm fine with that compromise.

Gloomhaven is a digital recreation of one of those board games that's so complicated to play that it basically sits untouched in everyones closet forever. But when it's made of Video instead of Cardboard it's a h*ck of a good time.

Cursecrackers came out in most territories last weekk, but it's the middle of September in Canada before it's out and it looks like a mash-up of Shantae and Wario Land and that's everything I needed to hear

Mortal Kombat One is the next Mortal Kombat, which is another full series reboot, and that series has been getting progressively better and better since 2008 or so.

Nayuta: Endless Trails looks a lot like the older style of Ys games and... I like those,.

Both Starfield and Lies of P on Game Pass might make September 2023 the first time since I signed up where Game Pass really pays off. It's always been a good total value but not being parted with ~$150 this month is appreciated.

Baldur's Gate 3 launches on PS5 in September, 9/2 for folks who preordered the deluxe edition and 9/5 for everyone else. I'm excited to see dungeons and/or dragons!

I was also just reminded that Cocoon is coming out at the end of the month (9/29), which is a game that's intrigued me since it was revealed earlier this year. It's from the lead designer of Limbo and Inside, but what they've shown off so far gives me much stronger Tunic vibes. You play as some kinda bug person, solving puzzles and maybe fighting other bugs in a series of individual worlds, only each world is completely contained in an orb which you can jump outside of and carry around. It looks really slick in practice, as evidenced from this recent trailer:

Void Stranger was just released on PC today -- it's a sokoban style puzzle game from the people behind ZeroRanger. I don't know much about it yet, but if it's anything like ZeroRanger, expect it to be more than meets the eye.

I guess Trip World DX is now a September release, and Sunsoft is publishing the digital version here, so that, I suppose.

I scrolled down too fast and read Starfield as "Garfield" and was all "what's this now??".
But oh no, it was only Starfield.

Aging Hipster Dragon Dad
Hey Gunbrella is coming out this month.

I also got my eye on Thunder Ray, which looks like a potentially good Punch Out-like.

It actually came out on August 31, but I didn't learn about it until today, so it's September to me: Golden Idol Mysteries: The Lemurian Vampire is the second expansion to The Case of the Golden Idol.

I built a new PC and the CPU came with a free code for Starfield! Except that everything I've heard around that game so far has been that it's super boring! Oh well, I'll probably give it a try anyway, since it'll be right there.

If you're looking for a retro indie RPG by some cool leftist/queer/intersectional/thoughtful creators, and either don't mind or affirmatively want a bit of sexy, Witch Hunter Izana is super rad. Steam/Itch.io (Windows/Steamdeck, Mac version coming soon)

I've been talking myself into picking up Mortal Kombat One which comes out next week-ish if you preorder the bullshit deluxe edition. I probably won't do that since it's $40 more and I don't think I care for the first set of DLC characters.

I hadn't heard of ZeroRanger nor this game before, but Void Stranger showed up in my New & Trending list on Steam, and I was intrigued by the hints dropped about the game's mysterious nature. Five hours in and through the first, how do I say this... yeah, let's just say that there's definitely a meta structure in the game's design that extends its desire to be played beyond being just a grid-based puzzle game.
