Interestingly, it turns out that the same artist (Darrell K. Sweet) did another cover for the same book (James Blish's A Case of Conscience) twelve years later. The one @Büge posted is from 1975, and the one below is from 1987:

It's the context that makes this one weird: this is a Polish poster for Close Encounters of the Third Kind. To me, it couldn't be much more tonally different from the movie itself. In fact, it feels very Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
