RIP Kentaro Miura

Tragic, unfortunate, and sadly not completely unexpected. He'd been dealing with his health for a long time, and that industry just has a habit of completely chewing up and spitting out talent. Such a shame.

Hated his work at its exploitative worst, loved it at its aspirational best--whatever the nuances, his work was always full of feeling. A singular talent I'm sad to see go so young in the midst of his life's work.

This is a bummer. I have a bunch of Berserk volumes I haven't actually read yet. I should do that.

Fuck. Berserk was always one of those long-running manga that I had a vague idea I might try to marathon through someday in the future when it was wrapped up. ☹️

The new hardcover deluxe editions of Berserk are really good, if you want physical stuff. Each book has 3 of the smaller volumes, with larger page size, and a ribbon bookmark. Amazon has them fluctuate in price, but I tend to pick them up when they get under $35 a volume ($50 MSRP). There should be 13 or 14 books once they're done, if someone doesn't pick up the torch.

I've still never read beyond somewhere in the teens of the volumes, but I bought most of those on the first Dark Horse run in the 00's. The 90's anime series got to me just based on the ending alone, and then I played the Dreamcast game, which I remember having fun with but being a bit lost in the story because I hadn't read the manga yet. I'm going to find where I stopped in my last read and keep it going today.

Very sad. I've only ever seen the '97 adaptation and had been waiting for the series to end or otherwise stop before reading the original comic. I am excited to finally give it a go now, but I wish this wasn't the reason why.

Also, reading reactions on social media, I saw that apparently Satoshi Kon (?!) made an AMV for that '97 show. Kind of wild.

I started reading Berserk today, due to the outpouring of respect and tribute on my socials.

It is the most metal thing I have ever seen.

Very. And it's such a foundational thing that there's like this complicated web of things we just would never have had if it weren't for Berserk. Like, we absolutely would have never had the Dark Souls franchise without this comic, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

I first came into Berserk through the 1997 anime. When I finally reread it, I was surprised how ambitious and gorgeous it is. It definitely has some exploity and problematic stuff that is an understandable turn off but The Golden Age is such a great arc, giving complexity to the characters. And the part where Griffith (spoiler for somewhere... I dunno, maybe around chapter 200? Around then when the amazing art expo happens) transforms the fundamental nature of the world was some of the most astonishing art I've ever seen.

I will say, one thing I wasn't expecting after the relatively grounded Golden Age (the big-ass origin arc) was more conventional fantasy tropes, like conical hat witches and enchanted weapons.

It could have easily been Fist of the North Star But Fantasy, as it feels like it was at the end of a wave of Fist imitators when it came out but unlike a lot of them, it was far more ambitious.

Yeah, I can't help but wonder if all his idolmaster breaks were actually recovery breaks from his illness.

There's a real transition point from the early initial Black Knight stuff into the Golden Age arc where it feels like Miura made the decision to step back from the full edgelord stuff and just instead decided to go full European dark fantasy instead.

All the Berserk Deluxe Editions are now out of stock on Amazon, but they are letting people buy more. I'm only missing issue 6, because it was still too close to MSRP for me. Most of them jumped back up to $5 off list, but there's a couple still cheap.
