Returnal, or what if scary Metroid Prime but roguelite bullet-hell third-person shooter

I would like to take this time to thank myself for complaining about it on the internet, which spurred them to action

So I'm playing this now. Glad I waited until after a suspend feature was added because yeesh, I'd been pissed if I spent $70 on this and had to play a full run in one sitting.

I played this mostly over the holidays and was surprised by just how much I enjoyed it. I mean, it's a roguelike-like, so obviously there were also times when I got super mad at it after dying to something stupid. But the gameplay, controls and story were all superb IMO. Weirdly, playing this game on the DualSense for extended sessions actually hurt my hands in a way that most games don't. Might have been because I was really tense at times, or else it was the variety of force feedback in the triggers, but either way I was feeling it after the final session that I played.

Bumping this because Housemarque's followup to this game,  Saros, came out yesterday, and it's real cool.

I still haven't had much time to play it (I've found the door to the first boss, but no access to it yet), but I can already tell it's gonna be just as satisfying to play as Returnal. I also think they've provided a few new gameplay wrinkles to make it easier in general -- there's now a Shield button, for example, which can absorb the basic type of bullets -- so hopefully more people can ease into the difficulty.

I have Saros waiting on the shelf after I finish Pragmata on Lunatic difficulty. Looking forward to it. (Both things, as it were, because Pragmata has some teeth in Lunatic.)

I plan to play Saros eventually, when I have time to play video games again. Seems like it's getting mostly positive attention so far!

Yeah, I read an interview where one of the devs said that they did this specifically because they were bummed that more people didn't get to experience all of Returnal. I'll be curious to see how it plays out in practice.

Yeah wow, I've only done like 4 runs and I've already unlocked an extra Death Defiance (Hades terminology, not what it's called here), but it turns out I didn't even need it to beat the first boss on my second try. So I got the shortcut to the 2nd Biome unlocked now.

The controller haptics in this game are off the charts, but it also plenty of accessibility options to turn that stuff down if you want to.
