The name was changed for the NES games because there was a tabletop RPG from that era that was named DragonQuest. After the Donkey Kong name kerfuffle I'm guessing Nintendo wanted to avoid any other issues like that.In Japan, the game we know as Dragon Warrior was called Dragon Quest
