Random video game trivia that shocked you

You know City Connection, the cute little arcade game where you drive a jumping car around various world cities?

The "City" in the title actually refers to the fact that you're driving a Honda City.

Man I got super sick of Bob Mackey's recurring snide jab about this on Retronauts, no idea why this became the de facto mockable factoid

I did it in a video about SMB2 because I feel like it's the default thing obnoxious people who know very little about game history but feel like they know a lot bandy about as if it's some secret knowledge that only they, learned scholars who heard this trivia tidbit from someone else, could possibly know.

I thought it was because the Mario 2 they did make (released as The Lost Levels in the West as part of the All-Stars Collection) was considered to difficult for Western gamers? Or that was the story going round in the 00s when I heard it.

Yeah, Howard Philips basically said it was too hard, but it also looked too bad by 1988 standards. Like, it was a 1985 FDS game and the NES was much more capable by '88. (Even Doki Doki Panic is lacking in animation/effects that are in SMB2.)

I was very surprised to learn on Retronauts that both Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs worked at Atari for a bit, and that Wozniak developed Breakout, the extremely influential one player pong game.

I was told to put this into the game trivia thread, so here goes: Tiny Toon Adventures on NES reverse-engineered Super Mario Bros. 3 for almost all of the values used for its physics. So if you ever wondered why it feels a ton like that game, there's your answer!

The relevant thread (in French):

Also Xenogears started out as a rough draft for FF8 before Sakaguchi encourage the devs to splinter off into a new team with an original IP.
Didn't Chrono Cross also start out as a draft for FF8? I think I read/heard that at some point.

Hunh! That explains why Super Bros 6 feels so much like a Mario game despite being a romhack!

Anthony Head who was Giles in Buffy is brother to Murray Head, who did One Night in Bangkok. The song is about a game (Chess) and also had a music video. So this fits.

I was just informed today (thanks, Kishi) that Street Fighter 2 Championship Edition is called SF2 Dash in Japan, and that's what the apostrophe/brushstroke after the "II" was denoting, as apostrophes are called "dash" there? All these years I just thought it was there to look neat.

Ooo, I've got another oldie: That M. Bison, Balrog and Vega's names were shuffled around when Street Fighter was brought to the US.

I knew this one but it's wild to me that this never got the "Peach"/"Eggman" treatment where the original names are used.

Did they ever do an in-canon in joke on the confusion? The game is over 30 years old, that feels like it must have happened by now.

Yeah, likewise. It’s doubly weird to me because I feel like if they’d just called Boxer “Bison” and dropped the “M,” nobody would have made the Mike Tyson connection they were so worried about. Then again, I think “Vega” works better as a name for a Spanish character, so <shrug >

And as you highlighted there, neither name sets are used in tournament scenes to avoid confusion. So they're "Boxer," "Dictator," and "Claw."

I imagine in a world where trademarks rule, that has to have gotten under someone's skin at some point.

Also, funny that Vega/Balrog is "Claw" instead of, say, "Mask," since he can lose the claw during battle.

I thought the SMB “Bushes are re-colored Clouds” revelation was more insightful than the SMB2/DDP connection. Showed that game devs were resourceful back then, and just how well this specific instance hid in plain sight.

That's a pretty clever trick, thanks for pointing it out. 😮

The SMB thing with the clouds is because the game had no mapper and as a result the maximum size it could be was 40kb. Cartridge space was at a huge premium. Games with mappers had much more space for unique graphics, but SMB was designed to be the ultimate (unaugmented) NES game.
