I don't think that's going to be a regional difference, it's too subtle, so very possibly a gender difference.

I love the idea of there being things we don't know in a game about pokémon research. It's giving me really good vibes so far.

The quest they showed in the video seemed to be “Wurmple can evolve,” so who knows!

I love the idea of a game where you’re just researching basic properties of Pokémon. Though that’s less exciting with old Pokémon, so I hope there’s at least a small batch of new ones that we haven’t seen.

Also, Game Freak, you’d better make Arceus catchable in this, and transferable to Home. I would love it if the hook of the Legends series is to fold mythicals into the realm of catchable Pokémon.

Game Freak, y’can’t set up a premise of “long ago, people were learning to catch Pokémon“ and the have NPCs with bow ties (invented in the early 1600s) n such. Can you imagine people domesticating dogs within the span of 400 years give or take?

Well this Pokémon game looks to be taking a few notes from Monster Hunter, a game which is similarly set in the far past with not-so-far-past type features.

Not about to ask questions about why Pokémon had bowties and fancy research facilities so long ago when it already has a fish that turns into an octopus and a clam that can become one of two different eels.

The fish -> octopus thing does make perfect sense when you realise it's a gun that becomes a tank. Much clearer in the leaked sprites.

I'm guessing this is set after the "People marrying Pokémon" phase of history. Anyway, this isn't in any way meant to be the first case of people catching pokémon, it's the first incursion into old Sinnoh, and as far as I can tell it's set late 19th century. I like that they're using apricorns as promised.

In Pokémon Conquest people speak of the idea of keeping Pokémon in balls as a strange and shocking custom, so the practice back at least as far as that game's time period. Though it's unclear if that game is supposed to take place in the Pokémon equivalent of the 1500s or if that region is just strangely behind the rest of the world.

Oh I know, but it's still a fish turning into an octopus. When stuff like that can happen, I can buy bowties existing in a time before they did in our world.
I love the idea of people looking at a giant fucking bear trying to kill them and saying "I bet I could marry that thing."

Finally played through Pokemon Let's Go Eevee, after being on a Pokemon kick lately what with messing around with Crystal Clear (which I'm trying to savor - at 8 gyms beaten currently, took a break before the Elite Four). It's... alright! I don't play Pokemon Go at all, but I had a good time with Let's Go. Eevee is cute, and being able to avoid wild battles if I wanted to was nice, even if the catching minigame is super, super shallow. Some of the gameplay remixes are weird (the tower in Lavender Town has to be mostly completed before you can go in the hideout underneath the Game Corner, which doesn't have any playable games, weirdly), but interesting enough. Gary/Blue being present is weird, since... all this stuff happened in Red and Blue, and he acts like it's the first time? Does Ash/Red exist in this game? Maybe there's more of that stuff in the postgame, which I'll poke around in over the weekend, probably.

Pokémon's omitted the Game Corner from the series altogether in new games since Gen 5* 'cuz of the whole gambling thing. Gen 1's likely only survived in some capacity in Let's GO 'cuz Team Rocket used it as their base and for running some of their criminal operations.

That said, since it was rebranded as an arcade in Let's GO...Would it have killed Game Freak to put a few playable mini games of some sort in there? It doesn't have to be stuff where you pay money to win shit, it could be stuff like the Surfing Pikachu thing or that game from Pokémon Stadium where four Lickitungs fight over who will rake up the highest sushi bill.

I would welcome more non-battling side activities in newer Pokémon games. Even if I never become the champion of contests or a Pokéathalon master it's still nice that they were things you could do outside of endless cockfighting.

* Well, worldwide starting in Gen 5. South Korea shut down the Game Corner at the start of Gen 4, Europe did so in Platinum, and everywhere but Japan replaced it with Voltorb Flip in Heart Gold and Soul Silver.

I guess I never noticed they haven't been in the games in a long while, but having the Game Corner be in Let's Go and being told "we're all out of coins" weirdly pointed it out to me. Honestly I don't miss it all that much, but it's weird that like Dragon Quest always has gambling in it and Pokemon doesn't, given DQ is still very much for kids, in Japan at the very least. Oh well!

What is and isn't passable under a CERO A rating is different than what's allowed under a ESRB E or PEGI 7. Dragon Quest games generally tend to get a E10 to T or a PEGI 12, ratings where gambling is considered more passable (PEGI 12 is also the rating the EU VC versions of the Gen 1 & 2 games got).

The odd spinoff aside (i.e. Pokken Pokémon Unite), The Pokémon Company generally wants the lowest rating they can get to ensure the best sales for their games.

Also Pokémon had a big reputation for getting kids into gambling in the nineties and they probably didn't want to encourage the comparison.
Games that encourage or teach gambling are now an automatic PEGI 18.

Welp.

Likely means we're unlikely to see any more official rereleases of the first four generations' mainline games* anytime soon (PEGI 12 was doable but the same rating all the murder sims are at is not), but given that the likes of gacha games are encouraging a whole new generation of gambling addicts I sure as hell get why Europe wants to crack down on this shit.

* Wonder how Voltorb Flip would be classified under this. While you're not technically spending money on coins, or betting the coins you already have to earn more coins, you are still trying to win coins in a game of chance.

Still waiting to see if we also get Zarude in GO for the international movie release; we already got shiny Celebi in an event for the JP release earlier, and it's confirmed there will be another crossover event.

I caught a lot of gigantamax-capable (well, on evolution) milcery. If anyone wants any contact me here or discord. I have several of each of the evolution items available as well, if anyone has a specific preference there. Most above level 50. Don't really care about trading for them, but would prefer to receive exclusives from Shield and/or other gigantamaxables.

Also sign-ups for a short battle competition for the weekend of the 11th happening. Play 3 battles win or lose and you get a (Galarian) Zapdos, shiny. There was one last month that I forgot to mention that gave out a Galarian Articuno. Month after will be a Moltres.

It really sucks that I can't get Darkrai in Brilliant Diamond because I chose to play it this late. Mystery Gifts should be available indefinitely imo

Anyway, I'm really enjoying playing BD at the moment. Beat the Elite Four two days ago (wow, that was quite difficult for PvE, so many of those Pokemon were holding berries that lower damage from moves they're weak to), and am working on catching em all now. I always enjoy the endgame "go catch a bunch of legendaries" tradition these games have - it was fun in Scarlet, too. I don't even mind the underground minigame, though I wish you could change the music as it gets pretty repetitive pretty quick. Does anyone know what the purpose of the legendary Pokemon statues is? Like I can't put a Regice statue in my secret base and catch another Regice... right?

The FOMO push has always been one of the things I've disliked most about Pokémon and it's annoying that so many other games nowadays are pulling this shit too.

I hate the artificially mandated scarcity of digital goods so, so much.

Agreed. I even bought friggin Shining Pearl at launch - at least let me claim the thing! Urgh.
