Merry Hell! A daily webcomic about fear and friendship (NSFW, sometimes)

Wolf

They learn to crave forgiveness, but the guilt that motivates the need is less a product of really understanding what they've done and feeling genuine remorse, and more a matter of feeling vaguely bad because society frowns on whatever it was they got up to. As if the sudden realization -- occurring past a point in life when it would do anybody any good (except, of course, for themselves) -- that "Oh, wow, I was a tremendous dickhead back then," the sudden rush of guilt that accompanies it, and the acknowledgement of that, is enough to somehow undo all the heinous shit they did.

Why, yes, I find these comics very cathartic at the moment. Why do you ask?

I appreciate that. I hope these comics aren't upsetting anyone, I wanted them to be... well, not realistic, but not super obvious, easy solution stuff.

Also, holy shit, is that a guest comic by the author of IT HURTS? That's rad.

Reading It Hurts!! is what got me to start Merry Hell. I haven't recommended it specifically on here because the early use of slurs (which is addressed and put a stop to, notably) makes it a tricky sell. But it is brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.

(The similarity between Ally and Merry is a giant coincidence, too)

I appreciate that although characters' actions and reactions are comically exaggerated, the root of their interactions is very natural, believable, and relatable. I don't tend to say much because a lot of the time I don't have anything very specific to say, but I am enjoying these comics. Please, keep at it.

This is turning out exactly as I'd hoped. Friend-tervention and all. ❤️

My thoughts about Bella were completely confirmed, too. A few moments after she started her confession and the flood of tears started, I thought "this is more about self indulgence than actual 'reformation'." and she went back to her real self a comic or two after that.

Yeah, this is very true to life, in my experience. Glad Merry didn't fall for it.

Oddly enough, this isn't how my experiences went. Both of the people who bullied me as a kid contacted me through very indirect channels, apologized, and respected my wishes for distance after the fact. I'll assume that I'm just a lucky outlier for it and be happy about it.

I never had any of my bullies reach out to apologize. In fact, a couple years after I graduated and was working as a cart pusher at Target, a couple of them spotted and accosted me in the parking lot of my job. My much more confrontational co-worker who was outside with me at the time kept them busy until the security guard came out and chased them off shortly after. I was grateful but also had an expression not unlike Merry's here. Absolute dredges, they were.

I figure the Japanese version would be an awful stretch. What's the Scottish one?

It is more UK-wide than it is strictly Scottish by my understanding

This calls back to a somewhat ill-advised pre-nu-TT storyline so apologies if it seems out of nowhere

To me it came across that these folks know each other well enough that oversharing is their default.

So did Jasumati show up pre-sunrise, or did she crash on the couch overnight?

Also, c'mon Dan. Let Merry be your wingman.

You can see Daniel has removed his glasses in preparation to become all that.

Yeah, I noticed that, too. Though I wasn't sure if he was trying to look cuter or if he is nearsighted and trying to lessen the effect of Merry's 50-yard "go for it, ya stud" stare.
