They learn to crave forgiveness, but the guilt that motivates the need is less a product of really understanding what they've done and feeling genuine remorse, and more a matter of feeling vaguely bad because society frowns on whatever it was they got up to. As if the sudden realization -- occurring past a point in life when it would do anybody any good (except, of course, for themselves) -- that "Oh, wow, I was a tremendous dickhead back then," the sudden rush of guilt that accompanies it, and the acknowledgement of that, is enough to somehow undo all the heinous shit they did.
