I might be setting myself up for disappointment here but if Hester doesn't actually get to kick her, then I will be genuinely upset.

For our american pals who might be confused by today's strip: in Europe, "football" is what you guys call "soccer". The sport known in America is "football" is known here as "rugby with helmets" or "that thing that happens once a year at 3AM that no one watches but we're told it has cool ads".

I don't know how our nomenclature got so screwed up over here. Like... football... the one you play mostly with your feet... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I mean soccer was an english term until they needed something to be smug about americans over, though as PB suggests it's weird US football isn't called rugby due to the fairly obvious similarities

You know what they call rugby in Australia, right? It's also football

Football is called football because it's played on foot, as opposed to those sports that are played on horseback. Look, it was an important distinction once.
So American football is football.
And soccer is football, or Association Football if you want to take off the extra syllable and put all the other ones back.
Also rugby is football.

All footballs are good.

(Handball is a bit weird though.)

Concerning quotation marks back there on that marquee...

I appreciate that you took the time to draw in the grease soak on the bag.
