Violentvixen

(She/Her)
A thread for examining the new games of May! Share your personal picks, interesting curios, and not quite there possibles...

Did you discover some small game that not everyone knows about?
Share that and let us know what it is about!

Already know a thing or two that interests you?
Make a list of your interests and/or possibles!

Don't know what's so great about an upcoming game you keep hearing about?
Ask here!

Don't follow gaming news that closely and just want to passively see what BigGames™ people care about?
This is the place!

~

Thread concept:
The basic idea is to list new games that you are interested in, as well as games you are potentially curious about or want to give wider attention to. You can briefly describe them or ask other people to help fill you in. The hope is that regular threads like these can act as a collective filter/discovery mechanism to help people decide what is worth checking out.

"New games" means any new title that is being released or ported this month in any capacity (not "backlogs/what you are playing this month"). The angle here is sharing your anticipation and promoting game discovery (as opposed to sharing comments about a first playthrough in progress - that belongs elsewhere).
  • If you want a handy list that covers most of the major upcoming games of the month, here's a few text lists of upcoming games:
  • Feel free to post other lists or list videos that you find useful.
  • If there is already a thread on TT about a game, please add a link to it
  • Final request: If you are the first person to mention a game please provide (at minimum) a short sentence description. (If it is a very big AAA release though, then don't worry about it.) This is a good convention that makes the thread more useful as a discovery mechanism, and especially helps out anyone who doesn't follow the news as closely as you.

Been keeping an eye on Rogue Lords, which appears to be something of a Slay the Spire-y game but without the deck building, and with a playable cast made up of public domain monsters.

Like a reverse Monster Squad

This actually came out last month, but I only just heard about it: a new tactics game for 3DS named Fragrant Story. Apparently, as the title suggests, Ivalice inspired, and mostly the work of one person. It got a physical release, and I considered getting it but the international shipping costs more than the game. I don’t think it exists on international eshops so I might not be getting it.

I can only find one review, which mainly complains about the length: three stages, 30-60 minutes. If I had bought the physical copy I probably wouldn’t be happy with that, but apparently digitally it’s only a few dollars and a short fun experience to me is a good thing.

Here's a post about in the April thread which has a trailer if that helps

I'm looking forward to Vampire the Masquerade Swansong. I think the developers describe it as a narrative RPG. To me it looks like an adventure game where skill points in certain abilities allow you to progress through the game differently.

I'm not sure I will buy it on release for full price, but its one I'm keeping my eye on.

There is a distinct possibility that I stop playing Elden Ring and start catching up on other stuff during the span of this month, but I'd give it level odds right now. If that happens it'll be stuff from last— well, from two months ago. But Eiyuden is actually coming out?? This should be interesting to see.

It's not the full-blown Suikoden-style RPG. That one's called Eiyuden Chronicle, this one is a prequel with a subtitle Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising. And it's an side-scrolling action RPG with town management?

2021 was a big year for Cotton, against all expectations, as the 30th anniversary of the series prompted Success to basically reintroduce the entire catalogue (sorry, Rainbow) to modern players through various ports and the excellent Reboot! remake of the original. The celebrations effectively conclude with Cotton Fantasy: Superlative Night Dreams (previously Cotton Rock 'n' Roll), a brand new game that not only revives a series twenty or so years dormant, but does it with an authentic approach to the pedigree while serving up tons of longevity and diversity in play via a wide playable cast of miscreants drawn from the series, other Success sources and more besides. They've done more than good here.

Little Witch in the Woods hits early access this month, with a full release slated for sometime next year. It looks like a tremendously charming slow life pixel art game with light adventure game and itemcrafting elements interspersed with interactions with its cast of characters, who all look extraordinarily cute too. There isn't anything suspect in the presentation that I can discern at a glance, which I hope is indicative of the rest of it.

The list of composers consists of Kenichi Arakawa, Keisuke Hayase (aka HAGANE), Hiroyuki Kawada, Go Sato, Keishi Yonao, and TECHNOuchi, so it's quite a murderers' row. Arakawa and Kawada also worked on Reboot! in which each individual stage BGM was contributed by a different composer to great effect.

Octo is speaking my heart's truth, but my brain will be waiting for impressions, because it feels like a pretty big unknown quantity.

Unless I get a copy for free? I can't be arsed to go back and figure that out, so I'll find out when Kickstarter does or doesn't send me a code.

I'm also getting Eiyuden Chronicles Rising, but since I'm not going to be able to play it til I get a PS5 I blitzed it lol.

The Direct today didn't have any must-buys for me, but I'm definitely intrigued by Soundfall which is one of those "available today" announcements. I'm super-bad at rhythm games (including Crypt of the Necrodancer which this looks close to) but the fact that there's co-op is intriguing, as maybe I can survive with my spouse who is good at these things. I'll keep an eye on it.

I also am terrible at rhythm games but picked it up because the trailer looked that cool.

Luckily, a lack of rhythm doesn’t help, but it’s hardly debilitating; attacking in time to the beat gives you a damage boost and keeps you from needing to reload, but that’s about it; you can play it as regular twin stick shooter.

Great soundtrack too, unsurprisingly.

This is all good news! Going to have to take a closer look at it for sure.
