January 2024 New Games Thread

Violentvixen

(She/Her)
Thread concept:
The basic idea is to list new games that you are interested in, as well as games you are potentially curious about or want to give wider attention to. You can briefly describe them or ask other people to help fill you in. The hope is that regular threads like these can act as a collective filter/discovery mechanism to help people decide what is worth checking out.

"New games" means any new title that is being released or ported this month in any capacity (not "backlogs/what you are playing this month"). The angle here is sharing your anticipation and promoting game discovery (as opposed to sharing comments about a first playthrough in progress - that belongs elsewhere).
  • If you want a handy list that covers most of the major upcoming games of the month, here's a few text lists of upcoming games:
As a reminder the Steam Winter Sale goes through 10am Jan 4th.

Here are the subscription service lists for this month:

Gamepass
  • Close to the Sun (Cloud, Console, and PC) -Jan 3
  • Hell Let Loose (Cloud, PC, and Xbox Series X|S) – January 4
  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (Cloud, Console, and PC) – January 9
  • Figment (Cloud, Console, and PC) – January 9
  • Super Mega Baseball 4 (Cloud, Console, and PC) EA Play – January 11

  • Phantom Abyss Version 1.0 (Cloud, Console, and PC) - January 25
PS+ - Jan 2-Feb 5
  • A Plague Tale: Requiem
  • Evil West
  • Nobody Saves the World
Feel free to post other lists or list videos that you find useful.
If there is already a thread on TT about a game, please add a link to it.

Final request: If you are the first person to mention a game please provide (at minimum) a short sentence description. (If it is a very big AAA release though, then don't worry about it.) This is a good convention that makes the thread more useful as a discovery mechanism, and especially helps out anyone who doesn't follow the news as closely as you.

The Ace Attorney Apollo Justice Trilogy comes out Jan 25th. It's a bunch of games about people who are too young to be lawyers (not really I just wanted an excuse to link that comic). I haven't looked into it in depth but certainly looks like a nice remaster/repackage of these.

The game Eastward is getting a farming expansion. Eastward moved waaaay to slow for me and I didn't like the combat so I ended up quitting and watching a Let's Play of the rest of it. But I loved the art, so I could see changing this to be about farming working really well? I played Eastward on Gamepass so I doubt I'll pick this up but seemed worth highlighting. I'll post this in the Eastward thread too.

So probably continuing to work on my backlog and play Gamepass games for the month of January.

January's got a surprising amount of stuff coming my way. Not only is Apollo Justice Trilogy coming out, but Another Code Recollection, a lovely looking duo of games from unfortunately deceased developer CiNG.

I'll also be getting a deluxe versions of Gimmick!, Baldur's Gate 3 and possibly Ray'Z Arcade Chronology if all goes well, haha.

two big fighting game sequels hit this month: tekken 8 and under night in-birth ii: sys-celes. i haven't played tekken yet (there is a demo that i'll probably download when i'm in less danger of overrunning the monthly bandwidth usage limits) and i'm not enough of an aficionado to really remark on the mechanical changes from 7. there's apparently some thing where the CPU fighters will "learn" things that you do and implement them too, though, which seems pretty cool for the less competitive types...i might buy it, but i'll probably wait for a sale

despite the number uni2 isn't really a big overhaul of the game itself, though it's probably the largest changes to systems and characters since the console release. it does have a bunch of new practice features and online rollback though. i've played a lot of the fighting game betas with demi over the past few years and she's usually like "that was pretty fun, i liked that more than i thought i would" at the end. this is the only time she asked me two weeks later when the game was coming out though. i never got super into the series but i'm definitely about to give it another shot

I don't think I'll be buying any new releases unless they are multiplayer games, since I'm sitting on copies of Baldur's Gate 3 and Alan Wake II that I haven't started yet. It'll be a while before I'm done with those two!
