I think I mentioned earlier, but after learning the fight I actually enjoy fighting Father Owl way more than the usual fight. Dunno why. Maybe it's because he has a bird.

I got to NG+2. Beat the Demon, and Isshin again. Neither of them took a particularly long time. I defeated Genichiro in the opening fight for the first time. That felt good. And was once again amazed at how quickly you can rip through the game if you want. I got up to the approach to the gun fort, things were going fine. And then for some reason the Snake Eyes miniboss there gave me more trouble than she's worth. I should have just fucking skipped her since she's not mandatory. But I didn't, I tried to fight her. She hurt me real bad and cost me a ressurect and then when I tried to escape she unexpectedly shot me in the back and I lost 20,000 experience points.

That filled me with such an intense rage that I had to instantly turn the game off and I"m so salty I want to delete it and tell those last three trophies to fuck off. That was basically ALL the experience I got for defeating Genichiro at the castle. Gone, forever. And none of the little pissant enemies around are going to make up for it. Not even the minibosses. I'm absolutely livid because now it's punishing. You basically can't get decent XP from anything but bosses now, which makes dying to anything not a boss completely inexcusable, the punishment is by far too severe.

It really is a great game. I love it. But being a completionist trophy whore here is doing me no favors. The grind to get all skills is just too much. It takes way way way way too long to earn skill points after a while and I need 20(!!!) of them to get the last 3 skills on my list. You either have to push through NG cycles and deal with the stress of trying not to lose boss XP or grind for hours and hours and hours. Grinding is not cool. Bad game design. They should have made regular enemies worth way way more XP in NG+ so that you can unlock everything by the end of a second playthrough. Or not make so many skills cost so many points. You should be able to unlock them all naturally by the end of say, NG+ is what I'm saying.

I really gotta slow my roll with the complaining. Once I relaxed a bit and got back into the game I had a stupid amount of fun clanging everything and earning back my points, losing even more points, and then soldiering through and beating several bosses anyway.

I take it all back this is the best game ever.

Holy crap. There it is. The coolest I've ever been in a videogame.

Here's an update if anyone's still following. I've almost 100%-ed the game at this point. I just need to get the Return ending and a few more skill points.

I initially thought it was kind of bullshit that trying to get all the trophies involves chaining together 4 playthroughs of NG+ on account of the slow skill point gain, but I see now how it kind of works out. Playing on NG++etc gave me a lot of freedom to play around with the flow of the game. On this playthrough for example, for the hell of it, I decided to fight the Corrupted Monk before Genichiro. I didn't know is how this would affect the game later, when spirits start appearing in other areas. Those were almost always the fencer guys from the castle in my earlier run throughs but this time the ghosts were Mibu villagers! So I guess this means whatever boss you clear first ends up affecting what kinds of spirits spawn in your playthrough! That's pretty cool.

Another fun discovery is how getting the underwater breathing early like that trivializes the second snake encounter, because you can just swim under him.

It is a little weird though how utterly useless money and items become after the first playthrough. All those crafting materials dropping are worthless with all my stuff upgraded. It's not even worth the time to sell them. And I haven't been at risk of running out of spirit emblems for a good playthrough and a half now. I would almost have liked it if they made the spirit emblem cost continue to rise through NG+ runs so that money still feels like it has value.

Well I'm back up to the final boss for the Return ending, on NG+3, the last trophy to get. Throughout this entire playthrough I have ressurected a few times but only Capital D Died thrice in total. The first death was actually some bullshit where I timed my prosthetic badly against the snake in the cave and got insta-killed down a pit. Second death was against Owl. Beat him on my second try. And then I died once to the dragon. Which is like... I didn't realize that could happen.

Also, I seemed to discover during my Shura playthrough on NG+2 that getting through the game quickly enough with few deaths can sometimes make it impossible to ever cure dragonrot? Because I only died once or twice during that playthrough as well and long story short I ended up causing the old lady to die before getting a blood sample and before I died enough times for anyone else to get sick I sided with Owl and locked out interacting with Emma completely. It didn't really matter if I couldn't cure dragonrot by that point, but it's still interesting to realize you can lock yourself out like that.

I’m glad I get to experience the game vicariously through you because I can’t get past a very minor mini boss extremely early in the game and I suspect I never will because I find the game maddening in a way that no other From game can provoke

Does it count as "locking yourself out" if by doing that you lock yourself into the final battle and end of the game? I mean, it does, but it also locks you out of...everything.

100%-ed the game. Really enjoyed that last playthrough to get the Return ending actually. Skipped a couple bosses, didn't feel bad. Had a really really solid single try victory against Isshin with a hell of a clutch ending:

And like well, there we go.

Holy crap. There it is. The coolest I've ever been in a videogame.

Someone once remarked that the entire combat system is geared towards the feeling of momentum, of narrative, of the tide of battle turning in your favor until at last, you've got them! When you're "in the zone" there's nothing else like it

Genichiro was my first real click of a fight. I got stuck for hours on YELLING HORSE on my first attempt at the game, never even got to Lady Butterfly.

When I replayed and was starting to get it I beat GYOUBU but was almost caught off guard by how easy he was now that I internalized a few things. And then Lady Butterfly utterly stomped me my first couple attempts, and then when I came back to her much later I had beefed up so much from prayer beads that she was trivialized a bit.

Genichiro though. I had to settle in and learn that motherfucker to beat him. Felt great when I did tho. Ended up beating him in 2/3 of my NG+ runs at the beginning too.
