Zeus shield aspect, especially with Zeus on special, is so good. Haha lightning disc go brrrrrrrrrrr
Favorite aspect, doing shield runs until the hammer upgrade that won't show up for that one pops (only weapon porophisy I'm missing) right now :(

I "beat" the game, which had a surprisingly sweet, happy "ending" - except there's still stuff developing? Which is cool. The tongue-in-cheek "security consultant" thing is cute, I guess, but it works as well as anything for continuing the runs. I do like how Hades seems noticeably nicer to me now.

In addition to building up blood for more aspect goodness, I'm trying to deepen my relationships and talk to people and it's getting slightly frustrating because it seems like I keep getting railroaded into plot-related convos right now and they don't seem to be counting. And then sometimes I just don't get to talk to the person I'm trying to talk to, because they're in a two-person convo with someone else, or something or other. Bleh.

Shit I need a lot of fuckin diamonds to get all this music.

I now have one clear per weapon - except for bow, which I have 5 of (highest is...4 heat right now?). Three of those are aspect of Chiron runs, the most recent one with the aspect maxed out. What's even more nasty than that nasty nasty aspect is getting the naaaaaaasty hammer with +4 arrows on your special, jesus christ. So nasty. Life bars just melt.

I had another Zeus-on-Zeus run where my shield started with an epic lightning on special from room 1. I thought that was absurdly good (to be clear, it absolutely was) until I got the "extra homing arrow" boon from Artemis that launched an arrow on every single tick of the shield go brrrrrr and ahahahahahahahahahaha.

I'm doing an extra-shield-toss aspect run right now to test it out. With 3 shields it's... not as noticeably great as I'd have liked it, but I guess it's cool enough. 5 shields would probably be pretty good, I guess, but brrrrrrrrrrrrr is just so great.

I did a Guan Yu run and thank god I made it out (even if I didn't win) so I never have to do that again.

Think I'm closing in on my 20th clear. Just unlocked Erebus gates but only with the Chiron bow have I gone to 5 heat yet. I'm still working on 2-heat clears for all my other weapons.

I just forged my first bond, but I think there's another conversation I need to have after that? I have three companion summons now, but I'm not entirely sure how they work... Like, the uses are so limited that I want to hang on to them for critical junctures, but also half the time I try to use them it feels like I'm not allowed? And they're only X/run, and you can't use one and switch to another, right? Bah.

I have the secret aspects for the sword, spear, shield and fists so far. I like the sword a lot and hate the spear, so of course I took the hammer for less max health + healing on the sword. (Putting it on wide-swinging normal attacks is way better than having to charge up a slow-moving shot, anyway, and all the extra defensive stuff and extra health is a big deal too.) Haven't unlocked the shield or fists yet, but I'm not sure they're really my style, but I gotta try 'em anyway eventually!

Some companions can’t be used in certain circumstances ever (you can’t summon Thanatos in a room with Thanatos) and initially you can’t use some when fighting Hades - but he’ll let you do it eventually.

I've beaten Hades with the spear, fists, gun, and now shield. I like "man, the shield is ALMOST something I like but something's missing..." Then I unlocked Chaos Shield. FORGET IT, this shit is insane. I had the multiple Doom stack boon, and Doom was upgraded multiple times, and my basic attack did Weak, and the Bull Rush counts as a basic attack, and I got the Duo boon that makes Weak enemies continously take Doom damage...you do the math. I could've made it even easier by taking the quick charge option too but I chose 400% to armor instead (itself a really good buff) since I hadn't taken it before.

Also, it hasn't made a huge difference, but I think I've had the Zeus Cast in all but one of my clears. Lucky charm Cast? Scientists seem to think so

I haven't started doing any heat runs yet because I wanna beat it once with everything first, so last up are bow and sword (bow is the next dark thirst option so I guess bow). The only downside is that I kinda hate both of them...I've had decent runs with both but they're just not what I want. We'll see how it goes I guess.

Edit: I got to Hades with the bow and it was like...alright? Then I died a bunch because I don't like it and made mistakes. Blehuughhhh.

Also when you put every possible thing on on the Heat gauge it says "Great! You made the Heat Gauge cry, are you happy?!?!" This game...

Late-game mechanics under the spoiler
I did a run with the Beowulf shield. I don't know why it didn't feel as good as the other shields, because it was just a slower and more powerful version except for the cast-loading, though the 10% damage didn't feel great either. I beat Hades but it was by the skin of my teeth (no, seriously, 11 hp left on my last death chance). The cast-loading was interesting but I'm not sure it was...good? I had Aphrodite on it, so I got 3 bursts of 100 each when I landed a charge on someone, which was pretty OK. But that run I also had Zeus on my thrown shield, with double bolt AND bolt splitting, so each hit from range was like 200 average anyway. I don't know if I had a great build for the aspect, and I'm not saying I won't touch it again (like Guan Yu, fuck Guan Yu), but I think I'll probably stick with my aspect of zeus going brrrrrrrrrr.

Excalibur continues to be the most fun and interesting sword, although having to stay mobile on bosses makes it a lot harder to use effectively. I did a run where I took the hammer for -60% health and 2 healing on each hit with a regular attack, and that was actually a lot of fun. (oops I mentioned that above.)

But the big star of the night is that I'm in the middle of a run with the rail's aspect of Lucifer, and daaaang. I don't know if it's good, per se, at least any better than the other rails, but it's fun. I put Demeter on the attack and now I really need the "burst at 10 chill" boon, and Aphrodite is on the special which is a lot of fun to just scatter around the field before blowing up. I took a fated boon for "tracking system" on special because I needed the cheevo, but either of the lucifer-specific hammers I could have chosen instead looked a lot of fun (if not just better, esp with the smaller area on hellfire bomb). OMG LASERS PEW PEW. My wonder is if Zeus triggers on each hit of the laser - I have no reason to think it doesn't - which would make possibly the best rail boon even more bester. But since the damage itself ramps up, a regular % boost might actually outperform it... this requires further inquiry. laser gun inquiry.

Also Meg is my girlfriend now. It mentions this on her keepsake and companion, even showing her little chibi portrait, but does it have any effect on those? Or is it just for flavor?

Note to Paul: you can go right up to 5/10/15 Heat to unlock gates and successive wins will give you bounties for lower heats you have not gotten yet. The main thing is it has to be a win, fail at the last boss and you just get darkness for the first three on your next Escape Attempt at that heat.

I hear tell this game is fun. I bought it a few weeks ago and am going to finally start it Friday or this weekend. Any advice for someone who hasn’t had a good track record with rogue-styled games?

Mm, the only thing I can think of to start you off is to focus on things that unlock permanent upgrades. Darkness (purple teardrop-shaped gems) is for upgrading talents, keys are for unlocking weapons, and nectar (orange bottles) can be given away to get you accessory items, all of which are permanent boosts and make your progressive runs easier. (Gemstones, the green-looking ones, are also permanent currency but are mostly for cosmetic stuff, though they can also be traded for keys before long.)

Also, once you unlock more weapons, whichever one is glowing purple gets you +20% darkness, which can be good when you still need more and more to get those talents.

Boons (colored spheres with symbols), hearts, pomegranates and obols (coins with exclamation points) are only good for the run you're on - they're definitely extremely important on each run, of course, but if you only get them you'll be starting every run from the same point instead of gradually increasing your baseline. A lot of rooms don't give you a choice, but when you have one, it's something to think about.

When you're able to trade items at the "shop," don't be afraid to take the special deals - you'll always be able to eventually get more of the items you're trading, especially if you're not at a point where you can use the item in question yet. (Titan blood is the item I'd probably hang on to the hardest and/or buy with other items the most frequently.)

If you want a specific hint too, in my opinion, the first character you give a nectar to should be Cerberus.

Huh, I've never really used the latter one that often. Is it particularly awesome? I didn't know how quickly it meant by "quickly," I guess.

Lately I've been mostly changing out whatever Olympian's keepsake I need to get a certain build going, at least at the start, and then using a lot of the second-to-last one for those sweet level-ups. Maybe switching to collar or even tooth if the run has been particularly hairy.

The fact that you get permanent upgrades greatly increases he chances that I will complete Hades. Thanks for the tips.

There's a little timer that shows up under it that tells you how fast you need to beat the room. It's not much at first, but level that thing up and clear enough rooms fast enough and you can get something like a 20% evasion rate, plus anything from boons.

I've traded it out for the pom my last several runs, but it was my mainstay from second or third clear to tenth, once I was comfortable enough not to feel like I needed the tooth anymore.

Lambent Plume is definitely one of the best keepsakes. I'd put it, Pierced Butterfly and the Pom at the top tier

Hmm I'll have to try lambent plume. I have been hard-lining Medusa's keepsake, the name of which escapes me, but it's the one that gives urns a chance to drop food. At max rank it roughly equates to finding food every other encounter, which over the course of a whole run is like 300 health restored or something. Extremely useful for a bumbliing dumb dumb like me who can't stop taking damage from trivial things like lava.

That feel when your run is subpar because you're aiming for a very specific setup to check off a couple more duo boons, but you also picked the pact to cancel out one choice from each boon, and you see both of the duos you want pop up crossed out

and then you die on the last boss because of your shitty build and have to run the same heat over again

feels bad, man

keepsake stuff

I do like the harpy-feather duster (Dusa's keepsake), and used it a lot early on, but I've been prioritizing other stuff lately. I mainly put top priority on what helps me with boss fights right now.

I end up using "guarantee this Olympian" a lot, at least one section per run (usually first), especially since I've been running a lot of specific builds to check specific boons off prophecy lists (All regulars complete, just working on duos and legendaries now). But even without that, I also like to ensure I get good boons on my main skills that complement my weapons. Not like when I was running the multiple-shield-throw aegis aspect and put Doom on it... Ugh.

-I tried the butterfly once but found that I cleared a distressingly low number of rooms without taking damage...
-When I run rail or bow, which is Not Uncommon, I like to use Distant Memory, though I'm not entirely sure how distant is distant. But I have hit the last boss for over a thousand with a charged shot from the 4th bow aspect and the explosive arrow hammer. So there's that.
-Pom blossom is good, especially if I put it on early and keep it there.
-If I've lost a couple Death Defies before reaching the last level, I'll throw the tooth on just to be safe.
-The collar is never a bad choice, esp. if I haven't gotten above 300 health by the last level.
-I'm still messing around with the broken spear head, trying to figure out how good it is. If it helps save me from the last boss's beams—which have killed me thanks to unambiguous bugs twice now—it might be worth it.

I'll definitely try the Hermes feather though. Especially if I'm using the time-limit heat pact so I'm rushing through rooms already, that could be a really good complement...

Broken speartip+ that boon (from Hermes I think) that lets you recover health by dashing right after being hit seems like it might have some potential

karzac

If you focus on it and have a decent build, it's not too tough to get the Plume bonus to 30% by the final boss.

The trinket considers "distant" to be something around "if they were a flame wheel, don't get exploded".
There's a daedalus upgrade for the bow with similar wording, but its "distant" is "approximately the last three pixels of your range".

I am rather terrible at this game. Dozens of runs already and still no clears, always feel like I’m doing barely any damage to the last couple of bosses. Keep hoping I’m going to stumble on to some combination of boons that will break the game wide open Binding of Isaac style but hasn’t happened yet. I suppose I could, you know, actually read through the boons list and make a decent plan.

jpfriction

(He, Him)
Um... Are you spending your darkness at the mirror?
Yup. Everything I have accessed to is maxed out. I think I need 30 keys to unlock the next two but not sure if there is anything gamebreaking past that. I have all the tools, am just bad at the combat/impatient.

One thing I did for too long was go for like Centaur Hearts instead of Boons if I had a choice, because I think I needed more survivability. Always go for boons. Money is also more boons.

This is something I probably do too much, I should focus more on damage reduction/evasion than HP.

These fights are also very learnable, no reason for me to be getting hit as often as I do but aforementioned impatience.

That said, I find so many of the early boon choices to be so lackluster that I never know how to start. 30 damage lightning if I time a dodge right, whoopdee doo.

karzac

(he/him)
Focus on trying to find a good Attack or Special boon early, depending on your weapon, and build around that.

Kalir

Do you require aid.

A lot of Zeus' boons are weak on their own and get much stronger the more you invest in Zeus. Lightning Reflexes is nice if you're already playing for Ruthless Reflex, but you're totally fine with not wanting to go for it.
