It's the last New Games Thread of the year, mainly out of a combination of new releases drying up around the holidays and also because I'm typically too busy to make new threads for the next couple of weeks. So whether you celebrate Squishmas, Candlenights, Festivus, Sumarian Solstice Festival, Just Specifically the Fifth Day of Hannukah, or one of those other trendy Holidays that the kids are all excited about, here's some new video games. Ho Ho Ho.

First up is the game I'm most excited for this month, and one of the things I'm most eager to tear the wrapper off of come Squishmas mornin' Collection of SaGa! A collection of the three Final Fantasy Legends' games! Assemble a team of... guys who have nothing better to do than climb up a tower and try to chop up God with a Chainsaw! After that, move on to Final Fantasy Legend 2, where a group of friends chop up... the central figures of several other religions with chainsaws. And, having used chainsaws to rewrite several bibles, hop into the third one and start taking down some Cthulhus with, you guessed it; Chainsaws.

I don't know how Santa feels about repeated chainsaw-themed deicide, but I don't *think* it earns you too many spots on the Nice List.

Now nothing makes people think of the coldest night of the year than the lonely life of a cow-poke, and also Bruce Willis saying "Yippee-kay-yay, Mother cusser, and so, we have Boot Hill Heroes, which is a JRPG set in Yeehaw times where you use your shootin' irons to plug some yella-bellies full of lead.

Space Invaders Forever is... perhaps the most eclectic collection of Space Invaders games there could be. For one thing, Regular Space Invaders is not included. But we do have an HD remaster of the just exceptional Space Invaders Extreme for the DS, and the implausible Taito retrospective that is Arkanoid vs. Space Invaders (which I believe has been slightly remixed to not be so demanding of IAPs as it was on mobile devices) and Space Invaders Gigamax 4SE, which is a multiplayer SI that I believe was originally designed to be projected onto the side of entire buildings.

I am extremely down with it, but this is a weird collection.

Synthetik Ultimate is a twin-stick shooter that is also a Roguelite, which I understand is a hard sell for most people, but this one is supposedly very good. Furthermore, it also looks a bit like Neon Chrome, a game which I am happy to go to bat for. However, it also looks like it was designed with mouse control in mind, and I don't know how well twin sticks works in that context; I'm assuming "poorly". Like a lightgun game without the lightgun.

NINTCHDBPICT000455813229.jpg

And speaking of "Games that look like other games that I also like, but imagine probably aren't as good" we have the most recent entry in the Mercenaries series; Mercenaries Blaze: Dawn of the Twin Dragons, which I would describe as "Tactics Ogre, but made on a budget". And since it's a Circle Ent game, I'm assuming that budget is roughly half of what you assumed when I said that. It looks... identical to every other Mercenaries game I've played (which was... two of them) and the most distinctive thing I can say about it is "One of the characters looks like Android 18"

nintchdbpict000286891158.jpg

Unto the End looks like a side-scrolling Dark Souls, so I will assume it is precisely that until I am proven wrong! And if I am proven wrong, well... I'll probably forget about that and assume it's a 2D side-scrolling Dark Souls until the day I die. Or until I forget this game existed at all... in... like... 3 days.

Rounding off this weeks new releases, we have an update to Nintendo Online! Possible the flippin' *wildest* collection yet. And need I remind you that four paragraphs ago I talked about a game compilation that included one designed to be projected on the side of a building. In any case, we've got The Ignition Factor, (the Legend of Zelda, except with hostage rescue, and if the only monsters were fire) Tuff e Nuff (fighting game with a truly perfect title), Donkey Kong Country 3 (nothing fancy here, just a third DOnkey Kong Country where they were kind of running out of steam), and Super Valis 4 (Castlevania, with armored bikini ladies). and on the NES, Nightshade (legit fascinating beat-em-up/point and click hybrid about a burgeoning superhero, and fromt eh same developers as the SNES Shadowrun)

1608041259971842704926402979652.jpg

And moving on to some of next weeks stuff, we've got Override: Super Mech League 2, a sequel to the excellent fighting game that I would describe as being like a melee-focused Virtual On. This one looks to be in the "More of the Same, Please" mold, and that means I am already interested. It also has Ultraman in it, if that swings your interest any more than "Giant Robot Fighting Game" didn't do the job on its own.

160804235362817514605783460351.jpg

And finally, we've got not one, but FOUR entries of the Bit.Trip series; Core/Void/Runner/Fate and Flux! I don't know if there's any difference between them, they didn't really light my fire any, but there's a WHOLE WHACK of them, and they've got Mario Himself doing the narration. I think!

And that's everything I know about! But there's also a Direct scheduled for, like, 4 hours from now, so I expect we'll set a new record for how quickly these threads can be made out of date. MERRY EVERYTHING!

Arkanoid vs. Space Invaders (which I believe has been slightly remixed to not be so demanding of IAPs as it was on mobile devices)

They actually removed it from mobile years ago and then put it back like a year after that without any mobile game rot. It's just a really good Arkanoid game, that you can play. It's still on the Play store! It's six dollars! This collection is also good, automatically, for including it, but it's thirty dollars.

Just gonna quote @Jeanie re: Super Valis IV:

Just a heads up on Super Valis 4:
Super Valis IV is to Valis IV (PC Engine) as Dracula X is to Rondo of Blood.

It might not be terrible if you have nothing to compare it to, but it's, ah, not representative of the source material.

Man, I forgot all about that SaGa collection. I'm buying the shit out of that! Can't wait for my SO to call my beloved childhood games ugly!

(She does... not appreciate retro visuals.)

I, on the other hand, am hoping the retro visuals help keep my attention. Like almost every game in the series besides Saga Frontier 1, I bounced pretty hard off the DS Saga 2 remake after going through the hassle of applying a translation patch, but I loves me those old sprites.

I want to like these games, I really do!

WE AIN'T DONE TODAY!

First up, we've got Turrican! And not just any Turrican, but Turrican Flashback, a collection of Turrican, Turrican 2 and... two... other Turrican games. The eShop page doesn't specify which ones Turrican show up in here, and which Turrican't. In any case, if you love Contra, and wish, more than anything, that Contra had huge, sprawling levels to get lost in, then here's a STINKLOAD of precisely that for you to Rage against the Machine with!

Kishi informed me, as I was typing this, that it's the Turricans both Mega and Super

victorian-christmas-cards-8.jpg

Now, if that degree of Astronaut Inflicting Murder is too overt and you want something more subtle, then Among Us also got a surprise release today! You may remember that as being the game that took over Animal Crossings spot as The Game Everyone Is Playing; as you're a cute widdle space-feller who has to do jobs on a spaceship... but one of your astro-buddies is actually a stinkin' murder-man, and you have to use deductive reasoning/paranoia to figure out which one is which.

2-FrogMurder.jpg

Also up is Grindstone, in case you want just as much murder as the previous game, but think Outer Space is played out, and Magic is where it's at! This'uns a match-em-up puzzle-rpg where you've got to draw a path for a viking to rampage his way through, and then use Loot to make your barbarian man better at CHOPPIN SUCKERS. It's from Capybara games, and I don't think I've ever disliked anything those guys put out and I've heard lots of good things about this!

rshy.jpg

And finally there's Calico, which is about building up a cat cafe for critter-peeps to enjoy. This one is... further afield from the kind of video game I enjoy, so I paid less attention to it during the Direct stream, but nobody has ever accused me of over-researching these threads.

I hope she at least appreciates the music. I love Gameboy tunes, and the FFL games have great music.

It hasn't come up, but I suspect she would not, no.

Otherwise, though, you're preaching to the choir. I effort-posted about FFL tunes back when we had a top 50 list about game music.

Trivia Time: A Final Fantasy Legend was the first RPG I ever beat. I have no idea which one it was.

Are those Christmas cards real or retro-themed fakes? (Also, some of those are horrifying.)

Also, it seems that just as surprisingly as it appeared, Turrican Flashback disappeared from the eShops eShelves. But, to be fair, it’s called Turrican and not Turriwill

I think it’s the really banal messages that really sells it.

You’d expect some context for a man being terrified awake by a screaming coconut, but the only context you get is that this is what happens on a Merry Christmas

Which leads me to assume I’ve never actually had a good one

Happy salutations and many achievements TT'ers! Octopus Beta here to let you know that Friday, December 18th 2020 will go down in infamy as the day Vs. Tennis was released on Arcade Archives. Based on the NES/Famicom not Vs. Tennis, this one features some gender parity as women were added as playable characters! They also compete against men on equal grounds! How progr... Oh. I've just been uploaded with some new information...yes. Uh huh. There's a lot of upskirts of these women players. Huh. Well, that sort of undermines any excitement of equity doesn't it?

I'll never understand Taito's stinginess with OG Space Invaders.

It's Christmastime, Taito. C'mon, don't be a Scrooge.

I do like the dapper mandragora and the hoodlum kittens ones.
The mandragora was one of the ones I found most horrifying.

Middle hoodlum kitten looks like it's about to go all De Niro as Capone in The Untouchables on the kitten on the right.

I think it’s the really banal messages that really sells it.

That's the Christmas Coconut - it has the very important job of making sure people don't oversleep and miss Christmas. It fulfills its duty by screaming at heavy sleepers until they wake up and start enjoying Christmas. I'm sure you have probably never ever overslept on Christmas morning so you have never been woken up by the screams of the Christmas Coconut.

Far and away the most baffling is the frog who has murdered and robbed another frog with the note of “A Merry Christmas To You”.

The rest I can comprehend on a level of whimsy, as separated by a couple centuries of historical context. Deadly Frog Assault, however...

I got nothin

The skating frogs like, cut themselves open and there's blood all over the ice and I am so confused as to how that's a moral for Christmas.

So many white people today talk about white heritage like they're more culturally similar to white people from 100 years ago than with black and brown people today and I just want to show these to them.

I doubt it'd cure their horrible racism, but it'd be good for a laugh.

How do you feel about wandering through a vampire lords haunted castle? Pleased, no doubt. This is only natural, you're only human. And so, it's my happy duty to report that Touhou Luna Nights was also released this week! It is, from the words of others, an exceptional chunk of Exploration Platformer based on the Touhou series, but is also divorced enough from the Touhou series that absolutely no prior knowledge of it is needed to enjoy the game, which is good, since I don't know a Touhou from a Toe-Hold.

I heard a rumor that a certain someone dressed all in red was coming this week, and he's going to bring presents to the nice and punishments to the naughty, and he's going to travel all around the world to do it in a single night to do it.

His name is Jimmy Lee

And he is going to unleash a trillion newtons of blunt-force Justice directly through the sternum of everyone who looks at him funny, up to and including a robot skeleton who talks like Skeletor.

Double Dragon Neon is out on Switch now, in other words

MYAH-HUMBUG.jpg

And speaking of arcade games, which... umm... Double Dragon Neon is not, if you want to get pedantic about it. But you know what is? Gradius III, that's what! I'm more familiar with the SNES port of the game, which was unintentionally toned down greatly in terms of difficulty owing to it being a port with lots of slowdown. This time it doesn't have that and, I believe, a bunch of levels that weren't in the SNES port! And it's otherwise Gradius, so that means shooting cores, collecting Multiple Options and exploding a big brain.
