I don't care how sharp its teeth are; a venus fly trap simply can not survive the weight of a full grown Italian man jumping on to it from any height.
Sneaking in to your house late at night and turning all your TVs to rubber hose cartoons like the Babadook this week is Karmazoo, a competitive/co-op platformer thats a bit of the more recent Mario Brothers's by way of Journey, since you're constantly online with other players but they're also completely nonymous and both helping and hindering you at every step of the way, because it's a game about Good Vibes as well as getting The Most Points to be the Winner.
Be an Animal, and use Animal Traits to accomplish tasks you couldn't hope to achieve as a mere human! That's how you platformer, baby!
But maybe you WANT to platformer as a mere human, but one with super powers and all kinds of kickass fighting techniques with action missiles? Well, then how about Astral Ascent instead, because that's a Platformer, with the kind of "lite" that everyone loves; Rogue! This here looks to be much in the vein of Dead Cells, based on the trailer, but WAY more colourful, and with a *squidge* of Hades, at least in terms of how the story is told.
Traipse your little acrobatic butt around some big sprawling levels and then beat the CUSS AND MUSTARD out of a horde of m-m-m-m-MONSTERS. Then die, and do it again but you've leveled up a little bit because, as I implied, it's a roguelite platformer inspired by Dead Cells.
But what if you're completely on board with the premise of wandering through sprawling levels pulverizing monsters, but think that semi-randomized levels are for the birds? Last Faith is here for you, you contrarian fool! It's "An unholy alliance of metroidvania and soulslike", according to the eShop, and that's a line so good they use it twice in the description! You know, like Deaths Gambit or Blasphemous. Take a trenchcoat guy through a big ol' churchy place and hack the crap out of monsters and find new ways to explore that monster castle (that's the Metroidvania part) and also learn to somersault and parry (that's the Soulslike).
Probably got to do some corpse runs too, that's a Souls thing!
And the whole thing looks like the cover to one of the better class of metal albums.
And if you want your Metroidvania to be a bit more bright and cheery and at least 70% more Mega Man Resembling, there's Yohane the Parhelion: Blaze in the Deepblue. And what is that, the eShop asks on your behalf? Why, Yohane the Parhelion is an official spinoff of "Love Live! Sunshine", that's what! And what's Love Live Sunshine? No friggin' idea, that is not in the purview of the eShop to tell you every damn thing, and you know my status on research; I'm not gonna!
But what I do know is that it's from Inti Creates, and it's a Troid, and all your abilities are represented by Anime Girls (and one dog) you rescue from monster-maze related dangers.
And speaking of games spun-off from a pedigree of which I am utterly unaware, we have Astlibra, which is apparently a rerelease of a game I had never heard of before. Well, if you ARE aware of it, and the prospect of a gussied up refined version of it has you exthrizzilated, then I have exciting news for your impending Nintendo Switch backlog!
And a video game that isn't *technically* a rerelease, but you'd be forgiven for looking at a screenshot and assuming it was, we have Prison City, which was developed on the basis that, dammit, nobody has done anything with either the Power Blade or Shatterhand licenses in decades so why not do it ourselves! And so, here we have a combination of Power Blade and Shatterhand that looks convincingly close enough to a later era NES game that I go "Huh... good job, Taito, you knew how to make those Mapper chips sing"
Anyway, it's Escape from New York, except if Kurt Russel had a boomerang
Next up is of course the BIG DAWG for the week, and possibly month; Super Mario RPG, which explains why they were weirdly reluctant to release it on NSO at any point over the last four or five years. It's Mario RPG, so... you know... a game that is in the upper most tier of SNES RPGs except now it no longer looks like a smeary mess on a modern television. And there's a heap of other tweaks too since why bother stopping at merely offering a visual overhaul. And are there timed hits? Buddy, you can Learn all about timed hits.
Mario RPG, shan't you?
And finally, we have the latest spinoff of Persona 5, which is apparently the big money maker of the SMT franchise, with Persona 5 Tactica. the SRPG spinoff of Persona 5. I am still... only, like, ankle deep into P5 proper, and haven't touched Strikers, so I'm going to assume at least one of those is a pre-req for being able to play and understand anything in this game, but still!
Traipse around grids! Use abilities to outflank and outmanuever enemies! Build up social links! You know... SRPG stuff!
They ain't announced another Devil Survivor is coming any time soon, so I think this is about good as we can hope for on the SMT SRPG front for the foreseeable future.
And that's all I know about for this morning; but there's a Direct scheduled for this afternoon so... umm... keep watching this space, I guess
