Digital Down-Low for 11/17/2023: Like the moon over / the day my genius and brawn /are lost on these fools

Octopus Prime

Mysterious Contraption
(He/Him)
I don't care how sharp its teeth are; a venus fly trap simply can not survive the weight of a full grown Italian man jumping on to it from any height.

Sneaking in to your house late at night and turning all your TVs to rubber hose cartoons like the Babadook this week is Karmazoo, a competitive/co-op platformer thats a bit of the more recent Mario Brothers's by way of Journey, since you're constantly online with other players but they're also completely nonymous and both helping and hindering you at every step of the way, because it's a game about Good Vibes as well as getting The Most Points to be the Winner.

Be an Animal, and use Animal Traits to accomplish tasks you couldn't hope to achieve as a mere human! That's how you platformer, baby!

NIRgGq2nky5IeOs4LOI1p8pkHpE=.gif

But maybe you WANT to platformer as a mere human, but one with super powers and all kinds of kickass fighting techniques with action missiles? Well, then how about Astral Ascent instead, because that's a Platformer, with the kind of "lite" that everyone loves; Rogue! This here looks to be much in the vein of Dead Cells, based on the trailer, but WAY more colourful, and with a *squidge* of Hades, at least in terms of how the story is told.

Traipse your little acrobatic butt around some big sprawling levels and then beat the CUSS AND MUSTARD out of a horde of m-m-m-m-MONSTERS. Then die, and do it again but you've leveled up a little bit because, as I implied, it's a roguelite platformer inspired by Dead Cells.

1-PGyB98j_lrpkM0ubHmzV_44hA=.gif

But what if you're completely on board with the premise of wandering through sprawling levels pulverizing monsters, but think that semi-randomized levels are for the birds? Last Faith is here for you, you contrarian fool! It's "An unholy alliance of metroidvania and soulslike", according to the eShop, and that's a line so good they use it twice in the description! You know, like Deaths Gambit or Blasphemous. Take a trenchcoat guy through a big ol' churchy place and hack the crap out of monsters and find new ways to explore that monster castle (that's the Metroidvania part) and also learn to somersault and parry (that's the Soulslike).

Probably got to do some corpse runs too, that's a Souls thing!

And the whole thing looks like the cover to one of the better class of metal albums.

184934.jpg

And if you want your Metroidvania to be a bit more bright and cheery and at least 70% more Mega Man Resembling, there's Yohane the Parhelion: Blaze in the Deepblue. And what is that, the eShop asks on your behalf? Why, Yohane the Parhelion is an official spinoff of "Love Live! Sunshine", that's what! And what's Love Live Sunshine? No friggin' idea, that is not in the purview of the eShop to tell you every damn thing, and you know my status on research; I'm not gonna!

But what I do know is that it's from Inti Creates, and it's a Troid, and all your abilities are represented by Anime Girls (and one dog) you rescue from monster-maze related dangers.

And speaking of games spun-off from a pedigree of which I am utterly unaware, we have Astlibra, which is apparently a rerelease of a game I had never heard of before. Well, if you ARE aware of it, and the prospect of a gussied up refined version of it has you exthrizzilated, then I have exciting news for your impending Nintendo Switch backlog!

image0.jpg

And a video game that isn't *technically* a rerelease, but you'd be forgiven for looking at a screenshot and assuming it was, we have Prison City, which was developed on the basis that, dammit, nobody has done anything with either the Power Blade or Shatterhand licenses in decades so why not do it ourselves! And so, here we have a combination of Power Blade and Shatterhand that looks convincingly close enough to a later era NES game that I go "Huh... good job, Taito, you knew how to make those Mapper chips sing"

Anyway, it's Escape from New York, except if Kurt Russel had a boomerang

271658.jpg

Next up is of course the BIG DAWG for the week, and possibly month; Super Mario RPG, which explains why they were weirdly reluctant to release it on NSO at any point over the last four or five years. It's Mario RPG, so... you know... a game that is in the upper most tier of SNES RPGs except now it no longer looks like a smeary mess on a modern television. And there's a heap of other tweaks too since why bother stopping at merely offering a visual overhaul. And are there timed hits? Buddy, you can Learn all about timed hits.

Mario RPG, shan't you?

343242.jpg

And finally, we have the latest spinoff of Persona 5, which is apparently the big money maker of the SMT franchise, with Persona 5 Tactica. the SRPG spinoff of Persona 5. I am still... only, like, ankle deep into P5 proper, and haven't touched Strikers, so I'm going to assume at least one of those is a pre-req for being able to play and understand anything in this game, but still!

Traipse around grids! Use abilities to outflank and outmanuever enemies! Build up social links! You know... SRPG stuff!

They ain't announced another Devil Survivor is coming any time soon, so I think this is about good as we can hope for on the SMT SRPG front for the foreseeable future.

55806.jpg

And that's all I know about for this morning; but there's a Direct scheduled for this afternoon so... umm... keep watching this space, I guess

It was originally a browser-based action RPG released piecemeal over more than a decade as the creator kept working on it. It usually comes lauded, if hyper-maximalist sidescrolling Ys clones are what you're looking for... but if its play systems and the like can be viewed as a supercharged and relentless version of that creative pedigree, that also applies to its intense misogyny. Pretty low on my list of priorities, regardless of the accolades; it's in fact so pervasive that the typical commentary around a game like this, where I expect these kinds of concerns to go ignored or dismissed, has regularly acknowledged what a deep font of sexism the game is.

Disappointed to not see Super Crazy Rhythm Castle mentioned, as I am still riding high on Final Fantasy Dance Party, and am anxious for Konami's latest rhythm offering that promises the ability to "shut down an eggplant DJ". I'm an old school DDR'er, so I am hoping we get a remotely similar ditties here.

Starting this starter blurb before Indie World, I am expecting to add more to this list with the Indie World today. Here we go.

Spirittea is one of dem simulation adventure games where you build relationships and do favors for spirits with the goal of restoring a bathhouse to its former glory!
VGrHeXi.jpeg

If you want multiplayer tank games, Tanks, But No Tanks is a top-down one and Adventure Tanks is a third person 3D one.
kdjhlFn.jpeg

Super Crazy Rhythm Castle is a Konami-published rhythm game developed by Second Impact games (which I note 'cuz its Xbox page doesn't credit the devs). Choose one of many various bizarre avatars and rhythm game your way to the goal!
JQnZPIn.jpeg

UFO Robot Grendizer: The Feast of the Wolves is a game adaptation of Go Nagai's 70s manga/anime where a super fighting robot punches lots of monsters!
fjTu2Qw.jpeg

Jagged Alliance 3 is a new entry in the RPG shootmans series where a ragtag group of mercs works together to save the president from a paramilitary force!
0mTgtFD.jpeg

Smoots Pinball is a compilation of pinball games based on some Funko POP!-looking thingies.
4tB2GPe.jpeg

Flashback 2 is another sequel to the classic cyberpunk platformer! I suspect this one will be better than that one nobody talks about or ports.
yZsMvwh.jpeg

Persona 5 Tactica takes the dissonance of trying to pair serious commentary on how fucked up Japanese society can be with horrible comedy anime tropes into the tactical RPG genre! Or maybe it just does that latter thing, I dunno.
7PkZtNX.jpeg

Please stop being creepy anime games.

Bluey the Videogame is the first game adaptation of the beloved children's cartoon series! Have Bluey and her family go on adventures together.
6b83fsG.jpeg

Naruto x Boruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections is a fighting game based on Naruto and however much of Boruto there was when this went into development! It boasts having over 130 fighters and covering the entire Naruto v Sasuke rivalry.
O07su10.jpeg

The Walking Dead: Destinies is a vidyagame adaptation of AMC's The Walking Dead adaptation where you can deviate from canon and I am expecting it to be horrible 'cuz we saw what just happened with King Kong when Game Mill was lording over that as a publisher.
QHo5tjv.jpeg

The Last Faith is a very Blasphemous-looking game that also does the Metroidvania-souls thingy.

...Certainly looks more like the thing it's knocking off than Not Cuphead did, at least going by screenshots.
YsbIpks.jpeg

Prison City is a retraux game that really nails that 80s NES cyberpunk action game aesthetic. If the world won't make Power Blade 3, make your own!
WY8QKli.jpeg

Super Mario RPG is a 3D remake of that beloved pre-rendered RPG with that puppet people want in Smash! If only the old man from that commercial was still around to see it...
K066Sp1.jpeg

Anyway, it's really cool to see old pre-rendered games get remade in for real 3D like this and I plan to get it when I can. At least after Star Ocean 2, probably.
gvhvTmO.jpeg

The Smurfs: Learn and Play is a digital children's activity book based on the beloved li'l blue person property! Minutes of fun to be had by all!
ESiWG85.jpeg

Oh and 'cuz I guess someone has to mention it, Hogwarts Legacy expands its reign of terror to Switch this week.

Ugh.

Yo yo yo it's your mollusk Squid Alpha here and we've got a HAWT Arcade Archive report for ya!

Taito isn't particularly well known for their fighting games, but one rises above all others in terms of notoriety: Dino Rex. Which happens to be this week's release! It's a fighting game where you control dinosaurs fighting to become the ultimate Dino Rex or something. It's a bit janky and weird, but sometimes that's what you want in a game: something off the beaten path. Something not hitting its full potential but still exists as a cool little experiment. And $8 is an ideal asking price for something like Dino Rex. It's not one of Taito's greats, or even goods; but it's among their UNIQUE.

Dino Rex is a masterpiece. The ultimate in aesthetic thrills.
Outside of my goofy parody character, I'm excited to try it out, honestly. I've heard so much about it but haven't had the chance to give it a proper go myself.

To be fair, any fighting game made in the early 90s has some amount of jank in it, no matter how good or popular it was.
