Four out of five doctors recommend their patients choose "video" when it comes to playing games.
Dandy Ace is the latest game that looked at Hades' runaway success and said "I wanna do that too!". In this case, it at least went for a different theming, as you're a close-up magician tasked with escaping a haunted carnival, and from the description, it's looking just as much to Transistor for inspiration as Hades.
Speaking of games that look like other games, so does Connectank. But, in this case, it looks like something vastly less popular that I know a lot of people here have been hankerin' for someone to revisit for a while! Specifically, it looks a lot like Rocket Slime. A lot like Rocket Slime. Rummage through the artillery bits of a giant tank, ferrying materials from place to place in order to assemble and fire shells and quickly enough to fight off GIANT ENCROACHING TANK MENACES.
Unmetal offers up quite an emotional roller coaster; as it looks very much to be in the spirit of OG Metal Gear (or at least Metal Gear 2), with lots of environmental puzzles and sneaky CQC and the like. But it's also a game that brags about having a twisted sense of humor. And it's From the makers of Unepic; a game whose attempts at humor were so bad that I think it counts as verbal harassment.
Steel Assault feels less... emotionally challenging, as it's a straight up 16-bit side scrollin' pew-pew game, looks very much to be in the Gunstar Heroes vein, just with a heavier focus on melee combat. Gonna wait for some impressions, but It's definitely going into my wishlist.
And why STOP mentioning games that deliberately invoke other games? Because Darius HD is also out and HEY GUESS WHAT, it too is one of those! It's specifically a port of G-Darius that looks even gussier thanks to the masters of the remaster at M2 (you can also de-master it, if you prefer. No judgements). Like most shmups, Darius isn't a series I know much about, but unlike most others, I DO kind of want to; and I understand G-Darius to be one of the better games in the series. And you might as well make it as gussy as possible if that were the case, eh?
That's right; the answer is yes!
Fly through space and explode an evil sea-critter or two.
Mystik Belle I HAVE played a little bit of, so I can offer more than vague guesses! But my vague guesses were still pretty accurate! This here looks like a spooky Metroidvania, but with the crucial difference that it's actually a lot closer to a Fantastic Dizzy game! LOOKS LIKE A TROID, PLAYS LIKE AN EGG!
Platform your dang way around a Ghoul School looking for ingredients for a Witches Brew after you get framed for wrecking the previous Witches Brew; then use random tchotchkes to solve environmental puzzles and then PLATFORM FURTHER!
CLEAR YOUR NAME AND INCINERATE A SPOOKY GHOST OR TWO!
Also up is Centipede Recharged a neon-and-techno infused remake of Centipede. Not... really a lot else to say here; y'gotta big bug made of a bunch of tiny bugs that are all linked hinder-to-mouth and you gotta disassemble 'em.
Deaths Gambit is another troid'em-up. But this one is all dark and gritty, like Blasphemous. Or like Chakan the Forever Man (if that was a troid). Be a guy what ain't dead enough and smush up BAD BOYS in order to make the Grim Reaper reconsider never killing you. It, too, looks pretty spiffy and now resides in my Wishlist.
Astria Ascending is another game out this week I was very excited for (but this one's on Gamepass, so that's financially convenient); it's a dang ol' RPG that's giving me some powerful Valkyrie Profile vibes, but that could just be from the general premise and the look of the combat screens; you got a bunch of demi-gods assigned to protecting a world what sees fit to have you replaced. It looks real spiffy!
Melty Blood: Type Lumina is a fight-em-up about animes smackin' the jeepers out of one another! I'm lead to understand that Melty Blood in general is a highly regarded, if less popular, fighting game series, and I know nothing about it beyond that. I *think* it's related to FATE? But that could just be similar character designs throwing me off, and I will NOT be made a fool of and cite that as true!
Unsighted is also coming out on Gamepass this week and ALSO looks really dang spiffy; it's an ARPG where you're a robo-lady tasked with finding the Space Goo you need to keep your ro-buddies from turning into KILLBOTS. And it's a kind oPC could turn into a kill-bot, including you yourself! You don't want to be a KILLBOT, do you?
Of course not; so play Unsighted today and get yourself chock full of anti-murder goo! It looks a lot like Crosscode!
Darksiders III is another game I've played before! This is because it was ported to other consoles years ago and is only now coming to Switch! Where the first Darksiders was basically Zelda, filtered through God of War, and Darksiders 2 was Prince of Persia/Legacy of Kain by way of Diablo, this one is Dark Souls, except Devil May Cry. Take the most violent member of the Four Horsemens out on the Post Apocalyptic town as she is tasked with murdering the hell out of all seven deadly sins in order to clear her dumb-ass brothers name for the crime of accidentally ending the world ahead of schedule.
Next up, we have not one, not two, but what I infer to be THREE Sega Saturn ports (or "Saturn Tribute" means something else) Magical Night Dreams Cotton 2, Magical Night Dreams Cotton Boomerang and Guardian Force. The first two are shmup-em-ups about witches shootin' punkins and the like, and I understand them to be very popular with fans of such things, and Guardian Force I was initially DEEPLY excited by when I I saw the words "Saturn Tribute", but I was thinking of Guardian Heroes. This ain't that. This is... I think something closer to Tempest? The description and screenshots aren't clear, so this is my assumption.
You know the level of research I do in general, and this is a robust week, cut me some slack.
And that's about everything that made me sit up and pay attention this week.
MAYBE MY OPINIONS WILL CHANGE ON THURSDAY?!?!
