Digital Down-Low for 06/25/2021: Some Filler, Mostly Killer

Octopus Prime

Mysterious Contraption
(He/Him)
Been a while since the last time a Digital Down-Low thread made me say "Oh H*ck, yeah!" as often as this one did.

SO let us commence, shall we, with a Hard Platformer, as they're all the rage again, and to that end, let's talk about a platformer where you can't jump; only Weird Up some Magnets to shoot off whereever you want; such as like in Super Magbot! Which is exactly that!

Next up is a game that would easily have earned the coveted title of "Thing that Looks Coolest" this week, except that it's a very competitive field this time; Ender Lilies! This here appears to be much in the same vein as Child of Light, except, instead of being Like Labyrinth, it's instead, like Dark Souls (or the like Dark SOuls of your choosing). Furthermore, it's also a troids-em-up, as your a little ethereal girl what can unkill people what be all dead-like and can use them as weapons in order to explore and pulverize your way through a haunted town.

Where else are you going to get service like that, but in A VIDEO GAME?!?!

Another platformer that's out this week, and on the exact opposite side of things tonally is the first name anyone thinks of when it comes to Sega mascot platformers (this is chronologically correct, we may proceed) Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX! No longer constrained to being mere a pack-in game for the Sega Master System, this one got a *right nice* visual upgrade! Or the ability to turn off that right nice visual upgrade to play with authentic SMS launch title graphics! But I guess that's not a *great* selling point since the original is also on the eShop at a fraction of the price.

ANYWAY, this here is a platformer, so you can expect a lot of hoppin' and boppin', and a lot more Rock-Paper-Scissors than is traditional for the genre.

Lego: Builders Journey is a neat lookin' 'un; looking something like Captain Toad Treasure Tracker and Monument Valley, except with everyone's favorite creation of Denmark; Lego! I'm sure there's a lot of other great things in Denmark, but few of them are germane to the discussion of a Lego video game.

I like the song Barbie Girl as much as the next person, but it's Lego: Builders Journey we're talking about!

Anyway; you've got to build a little path for a stack of Lego nubbins to maneuver around with, using other Lego bricks, artfully placed around a diorama.

Worms: Rumble is the *second* Team17 game this week! Wow! It's also the one more in their wheelhouse, since I'm pretty sure Worms is what keeps the lights on over there (there's lots of good stuff in their catalog, but Worms is the first thing I associate with them, at least). Anyway; this is a Worms game; it is as a Worms game should be. It's got polygons instead of sprites and is otherwise a game about little mad annalids using trajectory and windspeed to explode the frick out of one another with a variety of silly weapons. And presumably irrigating soil.

You know; Worm stuff.

And I'm genuinely flummoxed how to handle Legend of Mana not being the shoe-in for Game of the Week; it's definitely what I was most jazzed for BEFORE I looked at this weeks new releases. And I'm at a genuine loss at how to describe Legend of Mana to someone who isn't familiar with it; game does not play nicely with traditional genre conventions. It's an Action RPG (that kind of looks and plays like a beat-em-up) where you assemble a JRPG world out of the brick-a-brack you accumulate from dungeon crawling; and the specific way you go about laying that stuff out changes up everything you can possibly do; laying out unique questlines each time you play. Also, it already had some of the nicest spritework on the PS1, and now it looks EVEN GUSSIER.

The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet of Chaos: Chicken Edition, despite having *all that* of a title don't look too shabby. Seems to be a Dungeon and Dragonnier kind of RPG that, from the description, seems to lean in hard on the likes of Divinity: Original Sin, as there's a big focus on using enviromental items to bugger up the monsters what be hassling you. And it's the first English release of a long running French comedy series about RPGs! That's something the eShop taught me.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!

1270735.jpg
And speaking of the power of knowledge, infamous skeleton-pirate and degenerate gambler Mark Twain once called the game of golf "a nice walk spoiled". That's true; you can read all about it in your favorite school books. But he didn't say anything about how golf affects a nice RUN! And that brings us to Mario Golf: Super Rush, which, besides being a good game of Wacky mascot Golf, brings a new element to the table in that you have to RUN LIKE THE WIND to your ball each time you whack it towards that wonderful hole in the ground.

Now THAT'S what I call "Sports"!

And finally, the Switch also got a game starring... umm... geez...

Totally forgot the guys name.

Some guy who looks exactly like Tony Hawk, I guess.

It's called Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2, but I can't figure out where I saw the guy on the cover before...

I think he was on Entourage?

I know, research and all that, but I don't remember Alex Kidd in Miracle World as a SMS pack in.

Great work though, Octo, thanks.
