Digital Down-Low for 03/25/2021: Lizard Couture

Octopus Prime

Mysterious Contraption
(He/Him)
I did do one piece of research in this thread. See if you can guess what it is!

Vaporum: Lockdown is how I choose to lead things this week, and it might be the game I was most excited to see; it's the sequel to the original Vaporum, which came out to limited enthusiasm a few years ago; and is best described as Bioshock as a first-person dungeon crawler. This one is set a few years before the original, and you're one of the scientists working in the underwater tower of Arx Vaporum when the whole thing went to pot. I really enjoyed what I played of the first one, which made combat more of a deadly logic puzzle since every enemy greatly outgunned you.

You might think that Arkham Horror: Mothers Embrace is a recreation of a board game, since it's got the same name as a popular board game based on everyones favorite horrible racist who was scared of fish. And you'd be WRONG, since it's actually a TRPG that uses Arkham Horror as a backdrop. In your FACE, presumptions! Assemble a team of investigators who wind up needing to stop a bunch of octo-cultists from freely worshipping how they choose to, since that would kind of cause a monster-apocalypse, and those are generally discouraged in polite society.

Bladed Fury is a Ninja Guide-em-up starring a sword-lady in Old Timey China, who'se got nothing better to do than chop up some friggin' monsters and evade projectiles and the like. I was going to be kind of dismissive of it at first, but the trailer looked really slick; games got a real Vanillaware-y energy, just with reduced Horny in the character designs.

Reduced doesn't mean "absent", but compared to everything in Vanillawares catalog, it's pretty slight,

Black Legend is another SRPG set in a monstered-up fishman town, but in this case, it's Bloodborne inspired. Or at least Bloodborne by way of XCOM. Assemble a team of knights who don't like devil-worshipping alchemists (or "nerds") and proceed to chase them out of town via thrown bottles and poleaxes.

Kaze and the Wild Masks is another platformer! This one is more Donkey Kong Country-y than Ninja Gaiden-y. You might have thought it would be more like SOnic the Hedgehog, since it stars a critter known for moving fast, but you'd have been played for a CHUMP if that were the case. Take a rabbit and have 'em platformer through a bunch of levels bounding into and off off rocket platforms and somersaulting through BAD GUYS of various stripes. Sometimes you turn into other animals for other challenges.

Not enough 'zards in the trailer though, so that's a mark against it.

But if you base your video game playing entirely on 'zard density, then GOOD NEWS, because now we've got Monster Hunter: Rise to talk about! I don't know enough about this series in general to talk much about it, but I know a lot of people ARE big into the series and are all a dander at the excitement of tracking down dragosaurs and crocogators and turning their butts into stylish pants.

This one has ninjas! I don't know if that's new for the series or not, but it's something!

Balan Wonderland is the latest from Sonics poppa, Jules the Hedgehog Yuji Naka. EXCEPT this time he's trying to invoke NiGHTS into Dreams instead of everyones favorite fast-dog. I was really excited for it at first, then the demo came out and all my enthusiasm turned to ash immediately! Presumably they've done a lot of course-correcting based on everyone hating the demo, but that was only a couple of months ago, so I'll reserve judgements. The character design is top-notch though, I'll say that.

Take one of several Anime Tweens out for a fun time exploring a weird dream-world at the urging of a weird Willy Wonka-y clown ghost, and put them in monster-jammies to explore stuff more.

I guess that's everything!

OKAY BYE, I'LL MISS YOU!

XOXO

Cleaning up the aliasing issues on Switch and being less stingy with the power-up points would be a good start towards improving Balan Wonderland, but I suspect nothing will fix how boring the "Watch Balan's smirky ass fly around and break rocks while you press a button when the stock art syncs up with him or mash when lots of 'em show up" mini games are.

I wanted to play as the smirky ghost man, not do some lousy Quick Time Events. =/

Octopus Prime

Mysterious Contraption
(He/Him)
I guess there is still more stuff!

Firstly, we have this weeks arcade release; Swimmer, which, to my untrained eyes, looks a lot like Midways Toobin'. Except you go up a river instead of down it, and you can't huck cans at pedestrians for bonus points.

S'got at least one really big crab, though. Not every game has one of those.

Also up and... probably third most enticing of everything in this weeks round-up is Tales from the Borderlands, the highly regarded Telltale adventure game that takes place shortly after Borderlands 2. I've heard it cited as being arguably the best of Telltales output, and possibly the most enjoyable Borderlands game (presuming that exciting FPS action isn't your bag).

It's probably the one that that stinkapple had his grubby little mitts on the least, if nothing else.
