Absolutely ridiculous videogame accomplishments thread

Yeah my Platinums were mostly the aforementioned Katamari titles and I think one or two early AssCreeds. I feel like there may have been a couple other games from that era but I don’t remember exactly.

I do also vaguely remember doing some crazy stuff in Ecclesia, but maybe not as much as other folks here.

I’m pretty sure I also cleared out most of the optional super boss stuff in FF XIII-2, got way into the battle system there, though I may have stopped playing before the last DLC things came out. Likewise I cleared about all the available content in XV at launch (including the weird death metal platforming challenge Pitioss dungeon and fishing the legendary fish) but I know I missed tons of later DLC in that one.

Among my favorite accomplishments in video gaming is my level 1 run of FFMQ. I didn't have a roadmap when I started, so I ran into some big surprises along the way, requiring some extreme tactics. Knowing how it ends, I appreciate a certain ominous post on the first page of the thread.

Oh man, I just remembered the way I beat Final Fantasy 7 as a kid (the PC port, because I didn't have a Playstation yet). So I had a fully leveled-up Knights of the Round linked to another fully leveled-up materia that gave you HP back based on damage dealt (and maybe another one that gave you MP back? I can't remember if this was possible) on one party member, and then the other party members all had Mime materia equipped. It was just an endless series of Knights of the Round negating pretty much every enemy attack. It took so long and I thought it was the coolest shit.

I also used this setup to beat Emerald and Ruby Weapons, in case it has to be said.

Did you end up beating Penance, @ThricebornPhoenix? My understanding is you need to basically complete the sphere grid to even have a shot at it (and I sure have never, and probably will never, try)

FelixSH

I think it's even worse, you have to replace some of the spheres, so that you get +4 instead of +1 in a stat. At least that's how I remember it, from reading on how to do it. Even started, but when I was absurdly strong, and still couldn't beat Dark Valefor, I gave up.

Speaking of FF, I wonder if anybody here has gotten enough adamant armor to cover the whole party in FF4. (Not me, that's for sure.)

Oh! I New Game+'ed Final Fantasy 4 DS continually and got all the stupid nonsense in that version. If memory serves, that takes three replays, and carefully managing who has what... what were they called.. "Augments", so they are properly juggled around the party when certain characters leave. And I got all the special tail/onion drops for everyone there. Your reward for accomplishing all of this is New Game+ being disabled, thus encouraging you to finally put the game down.

Edited to add: Accomplishing this task and cursing the RNG the whole time actually significantly impacted my philosophy on life and how much we bring our greatest frustrations upon ourselves.

And as I often have recounted here, I leared the Rock Monster/Yellow Devil's pattern in MM1 over the course of two months. When I finally beat him, I powered through the rest of Dr. Wily's stages, because I was determined not to have to do that again.

This thread reminds me that for all my talk about the series I still haven't gotten an S-rank on the final boss of Sonic Unleashed despite getting S-ranks on every other part of the game, including every DLC stage. I always forget because the first time you play it on a save you don't get a rank at all, only on replays.

By the way, if you've been wondering how to do the hotdog runs on Eggmanland, I made a video about it which I struggle to coherently narrate because of how fuckin fast you run through the stage in the process. While it still took me a little while to refresh my skills to the point I was able to do this, I genuinely think this is the easiest way to play through the stage. To S-rank the stage, you can do this same tutorial (and even take a death or two in the process!) and perform critical attacks (the QTE-based finishing moves) on the titans at the end of the stage.

I have never played Unleashed before, and wow, the regular Sonic parts look very fun, and the werehog parts look slow and boring, just like I'd heard. 3D Sonic is such a trip.

The really grindy werehog stuff, I think, is mostly isolated to Eggmanland because in that level the enemies spend so much time guarding, block progress very rarely, and have more health and defense than enemies in any of the other levels. Most of the rest of the game is actually pretty breezy, and I find myself regularly wishing they'd do something like that again, because it's been so long since we've had an alternate control mode that actually involves 3D space. It's just that Eggmanland is a pretty poor show of it.

Speaking of Platinums, the first (and one of the few) I ever got was Gravity Rush on Vita. It was an absolute pleasure, to do, too. I really need to play the sequel...
I hope you like the sequel; I found it really disappointing.

One of the only platinums I've gotten was Elden Ring, which is a pretty easy one as far as platinums go. Other than that...I don't really like challenge in games anyway (I have very short patience for difficulty) so I don't hunt them down.

Oh! I once got 30 splats in a Splatoon match. That's pretty intense.

I recruited a liquid metal slime in DQ 5 after trying for all of 5 battles. Not so much an accomplishment as blind luck but sure felt great.

Beating the optional final levels in Spelunky and Spelunky 2 are the actual accomplishments I’m most proud of. I think I was literally sweating as I finished those.

Speaking of - how many people have done 100% completion on Super Mario World? Has everyone done that or not?
Just regular Super Mario World? I've done that several times, including getting all the Yoshi coins on GBA...

muteKi

Geno Cidecity
I actually got myself a mod for SMW specifically to backport the SMA2 coin metrics to it. I can say with confidence that I have 100%ed Mario World.

I've also 100%ed Super Mario Advance 3: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. The new GBA levels are interesting, but a couple are overly long. I think I had 300 deaths counted up when I finished the last level.

I'm pretty sure everyone's done this -- I don't think 96 exits is a particularly tough feat to accomplish (and I'm not just saying that because I play kaizo now).

Back in the heyday of FF8, I did the insane playstyle where you Card everything so your characters never gain levels, until you've collected every GF and can get the four stat bonus skills, and then leveled all of my characters to level 100 (two at a time) so they ended up with +80 bonuses to all stats.

Twice.

No Penance or Dark Aeons in my version. :/ It was an endeavor with no greater purpose behind it.
Oh wow, was Penance not on the original PS2 version? I know the Dark Aeons weren't, but I guess I thought Penance was always there. Absolutely bonkers either way haha

Yeah, Penance is Int'l version or later only, so my FFX 100% didn't include him either. I think I also pretty much 100%-ed the original version of X-2 - got the secret costumes, did the bonus dungeon and all that... actually multiple times I think I blowing through my 2nd or 3rd NG+ by the time I put it down. Game gets real breezy when you start with bonus dungeon accessories that boost all your stats a ton.

And like tons of us I did get all exits in original SMW - also all stars in original M64, but I think those may be the *only* two Marios I've 100%ed. I beat Mario 2 and 3 plenty of times but I'm not sure I ever went straight through without skipping levels.

My dad took two years to finish FF9 because he was obsessed with getting EVERY Triple Triad card, which he did. By the time he got to the final boss, I think the party sneezed on it and it died.
In FF X, he did all the monster arena fights in the Calm Lands, the last one literally taking two days because of its insane amount of HP.
We both agreed the lightning dodging was bull.

FelixSH

(He/Him)
I always find it interesting what people think is the worst of the minigames you have to complete, for the ultimate weapons in FF X. Lightning dodging was easy for me (maybe because of the trick, where you can run against a wall, and it would still count as running, so lightning bolts would come down), but I had a really hard time with the butterflies and got really frustrated with chocobo racing. I got a time of 0.0, and then learned that you need to have less than that (or whatever the threshold is, I hit it directly). Also, I'm sure there are constellations where you simply can't get a negative time.

Kazin

Meanwhile I've beaten the chocobo racing multiple times and have never gotten through the interminably long lightning dodging minigame lmao

The only time I seriously tried to beat the lightning game, I got it on my second try. I remember it being more boring than difficult, but that was on a CRT screen without any lag. I tried it again later on Vita and couldn’t make any headway, for whatever reason.

But really, the only one I’ve NEVER gotten is Wakka’s, because fuck playing that much Blitzball.
