Absolutely ridiculous videogame accomplishments thread

We've all done some absolutely ridiculous stuff while playing videogames, right? For me, of late, it's been shiny hunting in various Pokemon games, and I wanted somewhere to post them. This is not a Pokemon thread though! Please post whatever you may have done that would be impressive, if even only to losers like myself. Can be from any game ever! Especially if you have pictures.

For me, I've been playing Pokemon Crystal lately, wanting to hunt some shinies there to move up to Pokemon Home on Switch before they close down the 3DS Pokemon apps, so first, my full odds shiny Celebi:

JZ5hWQy.png

Hunted it on cartridge, but beat the Elite Four on my 3DS Virtual Console so it would unlock the Celebi event (fun fact: they fully translated the Celebi event back when Gold/Silver/Crystal were first released, so it's on the cart, but they never released a way to unlock it until the 3DS Virtual Console release!) and then transferred my save back to the cart so I could hunt on my Analogue Pocket, because the 3DS emulation is so blurry and ugly.

After that, I wanted to try to get some shiny starters with that sweet Gameboy icon up into Home, so I moved the shiny Gyarados you get for free over to gen 1, taught it Mimic, had it Mimic a wild Ditto's Transform, then when that Ditto used Transform twice, it became a shiny Ditto, that I then moved up to gen 2 to begin breeding, since breeding shinies in gen 2 is weird, and having one parent be shiny gives you 1/64 odds for offspring themselves to be shiny. Thus:

As you can see, I've been using the Transfer Pak and a downloaded 100% save for Pokemon Stadium 2 to grind eggs at 3x speed, which makes things go much faster, thankfully, as the bike moves painfully slow in gen 2 and there's no abilities or anything that speeds up hatching eggs. As is though, I estimate these three shinies took me about 7 hours to get (and I actually got two Cyndaquils, somehow, which is wild). Also, Purple Charizard <3

Anyway, please tell/show me/us some ridiculous stuff you've gotten up to! Also feel free to tell me to go touch grass. I certainly at least need to get back on the treadmill, sheesh.

I got all of the rare monster drops in Dragon Quest (née Warrior) 3. Doing that mostly broke me of that habit except for when I did the same thing in SotN.

Kazin

(he/him)
@Torzelbaum Ooh, do you mean those monster coins on the GBC release, or on NES? Either way, nice. And doesn't SotN have some absolutely insanely low drop rates for some items? Granted, that's a much more entertaining game to grind in, I suppose...

I mean on NES (in case me referring to it as Warrior didn't tip you off).

There are some pretty low drop rates in SotN but I did that in Luck Mode which helps a lot.

Well, it was still called Dragon Warrior III on GBC haha. I've never played the alternate modes in SotN. I should really replay that game one of these days.

I never played the GBC version. So I guess it must have came out before Enix were able to use the original name in the US.

So you've never played in Richter mode? Have you at least played with a clear save and gotten the Duplicator?

Luck Mode can be challenging if you don't use the trick to keep Alucard's starting gear.

I got every medal in Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition.

I've legitimately unlocked the final machine in F-Zero Maximum Velocity, the Jet Vermilion, by beating every cup with every other vehicle on master mode.

Twice.

(And I'll do it again.)

Nope to both! I've only beaten SotN once, believe it or not lol. I came to it later, after all the GBA and several of the DS games (I couldn't find a copy for a while, and I even got the PS3 pretty late so I couldn't download it).

I am absolutely terrible at the higher difficulties in that game, though I do enjoy it. Now, what hardware was it on? Original un-backlit GBA?

My memory is slightly hazy, but I know I did it once on the 3DS when it was an ambassador title. Previously, I did it on our old cart, either on the GBA SP or the OG DS.

@Kazin That's some nice shiny huntin'! I didn't even know about some of those methods. I'm still up in theory for doing some shiny trades in Home one of these days - if you wanna toss in some extra random GB-marked things I sure wouldn't say no!

As for ridiculous accomplishments, let's see...

I collected every single possible object in I think at least the first three Katamari games, maybe more.

I beat every dang thing in the Arena in FFX, which gets pretty ridiculous.

I got the Tournesol in FFXII, which is just a thing in the game you can get but the method is pretty stupidly grindy and obtuse.

And in SotN I think I got up to the max map percentage you could get to with glitches known about at the time I was playing. I think it was 300-ish%. (Just looked up and more glitches have been found since then bringing the max up to like 450%!)

I don't have many of those! lol My shiny wants at this point are, er, obscure. Legendaries, mainly, that I don't already have shiny. I don't know if you'd be willing to trade those.

Yeah, all that stuff is pretty ridiculous. Every possible object in Katamari? Did you use a guide? Is there even a guide for that? And yeah, the arena in FFX is pretty ridiculous as well, props for that, I gave up fairly quickly in the HD collection lol. I don't even know about the map percentage glitches in SotN. Are there like, glitchy areas you can get to? Like some minus world stuff or something?

Not exactly. There's a couple ways to glitch into normally inaccessible parts of the regular map and into a small area under the trap door at the castle gate (for the PS version). I've never used any of the techniques so 220.6 has always been my max percentage.

Yeah, there are movement glitches which get you a few normally inaccessible screens using stuff like the wolf and mist in very particular ways, but then there's things you can do by spamming items (via the item duplicator) that move Alucard like one pixel at a time and use that with particular timing to get inside walls, or through walls, and pick up all kinds of extra screens around the outside edges of the castle.

And of course there's guides for all the Katamari objects. ;) This was even back when GameFAQs was still active enough that you didn't have to resort to videos for everything! I probably got like 98% of them myself but there are definitely a few really obscure ones in each game that I had to look up locations for, and a few that are just challenging either because you have to get huge in a short time to be able to pick them up somewhere, or they're in weird stages like the end-when-you-hit-anything-cow-like one. And I remember one case where a unique item is for some reason (might not even be intentional, I dunno) just plain lost under the water (in a land-based stage so you can't see it at all) so that's either a guide or sheer luck.

i unlocked all the mini-games in Mega Man Zero 3 on real hardware, which requires at least 7 clears, two of which are required full 100 pt runs with only the saber and buster respectively. It is fucking stupid.

I also got all the medals in Mega Man ZX Advent, which are similarly stupid.

I don't know about the medals, not having played ZX Advent, but I do know how insane it is to unlock the minigames in MMZ 3. I did it once with a lot of savestate abuse (at least one of them, the one with Shadow - was that his name? the ninja guardian), couldn't imagine doing it "fair".

I beat Farewell in Celeste (though not the final strawberry in there, and also not the golden one). I also got a few golden strawberries (which means beating a level without dying) and got that special strawberry in the first level without dashing. Which isn't that bad in the end, certainly not on the level of the stuff others have posted here (at least the stuff I understand).

Not sure if this one counts, since it was kind of unintentional: When playing the original X-Wing, I was unaware of certain key commands, specifically the one that instantly transfers energy stored in your weapons to your shields, without having to wait for the regular slow shield recharge. This basically meant that I played through a majority of X-Wing in a kind of "hard mode" without realizing it (and X-Wing is a famously hard game anyway!). It was only when I reached the Death Star, and kept dying over and over, and couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong, that I purely by accident pressed the key for energy transfer, and realized my mistake/achievment.

It's been quite a few years, now, but I have some wild Nethack achievements! I've ascended eight times, including no-polymorph, vegetarian, and--definitely the top ridiculous one--no wishes, which also turned out to feature no magic resistance. Which really shows the spirit of a wishless run, having to get by with what you can find, no guarantee you can patch every hole in your kit.

At time of writing, I've beaten 173 kaizo Super Mario World romhacks. I'll probably break 200 before the end of the year!

Back when Rebirth was the only version of The Binding of Isaac available (not counting the OG Flash version), I had 100% of the unlocks. This involves doing a lot of grueling runs with a character who dies in a single hit*. I also got the vast majority of those unlocks again when Repentance was released a few years ago, and some more that require you to do even more ridiculous shit with an even weaker* version of that character (for those in the know: beating Delirium, amongst other bosses, with Tainted Lost).

I know I have some more, but I can't think of them at the moment.

*Eventually you unlock the ability to take one extra hit, which resets when you enter a new room.
**Back to dying in a single hit.

ah yeah, I had full clears on Flash & Rebirth Isaac, noooot so much the subsequent borderline-game-ruining DLCs (the last one, Repentance, made things a lot better, but not to the point that the bug bit me again)

One hundred and seventy three kaizos, @lincolnic?! Are you like a world record holder or something? Those things are ridiculous.

I've never played Binding of Isaac, but I had a buddy who just went through getting 100% on it, and it sounds like he did all or at least most of what you both did, as I didn't know what the hell he was talking about eventually lol.

Absolutely not. There are plenty of people who've been playing longer than me and have cleared several hundred hacks -- at least one guy I know of has cleared over 1000.

Yeah, I wasn't able to play any of the Rebirth DLC until Repentance came out, and honestly I didn't like a lot of the changes/additions. It just drastically changed the feel of the game. (Obviously I still liked the base game enough to do a bunch of Tainted Lost clears, but still.)

I beat all the bosses from past games in Dragon Quest IX at level 99. They start at level 1 and go up 1 each time you beat them, so that takes at least 99 fights for each of them (there are 13), but in practice it takes more because they get really hard at higher levels.

I also did this without using any stat-boosting seeds (because I had choice paralysis about who to use them on for a while and then forgot about them) or any of the "alchemiracle" ultimate weapons (bad luck, though I did have the failed alchemiracle versions of some of them, which are almost as strong).

So you fought those bosses 1,287 times? Jesus. I'm glad I made this thread, there's a bunch of stuff I'm not even aware of, and I beat DQ9 (although it was well after the heyday of streetpassing).

I fell out of the habit of using seeds in Dragon Quest games too. DQ gets real fun when its challenging and stashing seeds makes for an effective hard mode. I'm pretty proud to have beaten most of the games with a collection of trail mix taking up space at the bottom of the bag.

I rarely chase extreme in-game challenges but I had great experiences getting all boss medals in Ecclesia and 100% Kingdom Hearts 1 on the hardest difficulty. I found that KH's janky sluggo combat system sings at high difficulty and besting Sephiroth was a real gaming career highlight (ugh).

I'm pretty good at Sayonara Wild Hearts, which is an absurd thing to say as its essentially a rail shooter that's exactly the same each time. But there's a nuanced score game hidden in there that rewards risky and creative play. There's no real official leaderboard or anything like that but my scores match other top scores I've seen online. I'm still shooting for that high score YOLO run though, which is a particularly tight needle to thread.

Dubious achievements:

- Gotten the ether from the Whelk in FF6 some 5 or 6 times. This requires nothing more than bone-headed patience.

- Gotten the Sword of Kings three times. Requires no skill just dumb luck.

- Beat Dracula in Sotton 50 times in one night for an arbitrary challenge on this forum. Requires no skill or patience just dumb bone-headedness.

Dumb bone-headedness absolutely counts, it's how you hunt shinies in Pokemon, which I started this thread with lol. I need to play Sayonara Wild Hearts, it looks fun.

It's a weird thing to say, but I rarely distinctly remember my gaming achievements past a few months. I can be reminded of them, though! And all the "never get hit by a boss" medals in Ecclesia and every last difficulty challenge in Kingdom Hearts 1 are on my scorecard. We must have had a lot of free time at the exact same age...

I got every last trophy in Final Fantasy 13-2 and Lightning Returns (but not OG Final Fantasy 13). I think the only other games I have "platinumed" have been Lollipop Chainsaw and Saints Row IV. I invite anyone to try to figure out my gaming taste from that list.

Speaking of Platinums, the first (and one of the few) I ever got was Gravity Rush on Vita. It was an absolute pleasure, to do, too. I really need to play the sequel...
