So in honor of National Barbecue day I wanted to see what and how you like to eat your barbecue / BBQ.

Note: You can vote for more than one meat but I didn't think to make the poll question reflect that. Combo platters are always nice.

So in addition to the poll question, here are a few other related questions:
Rub, sauce or both?
If sauce then what style / kind?
What are your choices for side dishes?

The understanding that I've always been given is that "barbecue" means something entirely different in most of the US than it means here, where it typically means grilled hot dogs and hamburgers. I'm pretty sure I've never had what most people posting here would consider to be "barbecue".

I like ribs but I prefer pork over beef. I just find beef to be a very dull meat, of all the meets. Oh you can do good stuff with it but a big hunk of beef can never beat pork, IMO.

I love a good beer can chicken.

Yeah, real pit barbeque is amazing, especially cracklins.

That being said I never really get it so brisket and pulled pork because I am way too lazy to make those at home. I also voted for chicken since sometimes I just want something lighter.

Rub versus sauce totally depends on my mood and what's in them. My mom is legit allergic to black pepper so I never really had it growing up and as such find it really overpowering. My spice tolerance in general is probably an 8/10 so I can handle most of 'em. I hate sweet barbeque sauces though, bleah.

Sides, cornbread for sure. Then baked beans. I only like coleslaw when it's incredibly light on the mayonnaise or made with something else less creamy, but when it's good I annihilate it. I have taken coleslaw and rinsed it off in a colander in the sink and still felt it had too much crap on it so it's generally something I only make myself rather than ordering.

Refuse to vote out of a lack of azn bbq options.
I miss Mongolian BBQ so damned much. There was one place in town that everyone said was horrifyingly bad and it closed either just prior to or at the start of the pandemic. I've still only had Korean BBQ in Korea. A Korean place is supposed to open later this year but don't know exactly what they'll have yet.

I used to live close to one of the last pit bbq places in the Houston city limits. They had AMAZING beef ribs.

I love bbq in all it’s forms, but I usually prefer the German meat market style you get in Texas just cause it’s what I grew up with. Lots of beef, tomato based spicy sauce, etc. I prefer rub on Carolina style bbq just cause I never developed a taste for vinegar sauce.

My go to sides are usually sweet to balance the spicy - potato salad, corn, coleslaw, cobbler. Cobbler is totally a side and anyone who says otherwise is nuts.

Actually, that's pretty much what it often means in the central Midwest where I grew up, though steaks are also commonly on the grill, or possibly ribs, and often using the sweet/tangy brown sauce due to proximity to the canonical one out of Kansas City.

So it came as quite a shock to me when I came to the Southeast for the first time for grad school and went to a mixer serving "barbecue" to discover that here (central NC) that always means the pulled pork in vinegar sauce variety, with liquefied cole slaw on the side. Still not a fan of all that (though I will certainly take any hush puppies on offer).

Despite the misleading name, Mongolian BBQ is pretty good. Korean BBQ is one of my most favorite things in the world. Grew up on Japanese BBQ, that's comfort food for me. I guess the chicken option could be considered for that in the poll options, but thinly sliced steak and/or skewered beef doesn't really have a home in the poll other than being Other.

Sorry about that - the intended focus of this poll was more on smoking than on grilling.

Burnt ends. There are a dozen places in KC where you can get burnt ends that might be worth killing over.
