Well that is fascinating, even moreso in that it otherwise doesn't seem to affect anything. Just a little bit of extra flavor if you're paying attention (and guilt once you realize your carelessness).
The implication is that since Damu protects you from the Breach's effects on living things, exposure to him is like unprotected exposure to the Breach. Indra is fine because Damu, even with his poor control, is still in control with her, but everyone else exposed to his nanites begins to change into a biomechanical creature. At some point Athetos must've gotten access to Damu or his nanites and engineered the Pathogen as a more purposeful form of the interaction? At least, that's what I got out of it?
Hmm... That reminds me of something I noticed, though I'm not entirely sure of the, implications: in the main world, Kiengir, all the enemies you face are machines - drones controlled by the Lamassu. But in the breach, the enemies are all (or at least appear to be) organic creatures - spores, slimes, bugs, fungi.
A lot of them are low-fi versions of the wildlife kinds of enemies on Sudra.
