Double post for a different train of thought, should we start talking about availability? I'm currently free Monday and Thursday whenever, working nights the rest of the time.

It's very low RP, really. There are event cards in between missions, and sometimes choices to make regarding those that can affect the group's standing and the available missions. And you permanently upgrade the town and your character in various ways as you go (it is, among other things, something of a Legacy-style game). But the missions aren't really narrative events. It's roughly on the level of something like Descent; lots of combat and character customization, some interstitial flavor stuff, but this is mainly a dungeon crawler/combat game, not an RPG.

As far as availability, I'm sort of irregular depending on who else in the house wants to use the computer, and for what (which is why I want this somewhat independent of me). Would a Google group work for everyone for scheduling? That way we can put down some standing events that people can sign onto as they're available to play.

Also I'm not great with TTS so I'm still figuring out how to play this smoothly on that. If anyone else is an expert there I'm happy to let them take the lead on TTS mechanics while I lead on shepherding game mechanics for our initial games.

I'm probably not going to sign on since I have my own weekly in-progress Gloomhaven campaign ATM, but as someone who has played Gloomhaven on TTS for hundreds of hours, I'm certainly willing to offer help or expertise if you have any questions about the application or the module.

The main thing right now would be "how get JotL characters into GH module"

Because if we can't then I'm going to need to pare this down to 6 for the time being or anyone with a JotL character will need to play the JotL campaign.

Hrm. I'm afraid that I can't speak to that, since I've never touched Jaws of the Lion. I hope you can figure it out, though!

FWIW, if there's some separate module you've found for Jaws of the Lion, TTS is surprisingly robust when it comes to just copy-pasting assets.

I've dabbled a bit in the PC version, and would be up for trying this, schedule permitting. I'll go for the Voidweaver if nobody else wants it, but don't have a strong preference.

Jaws is the same combat game, just introduced piece by piece and with a much less involved campaign. And yeah, there's a JotL module, so if copy-pasting works, then that should!

Voidwarden's already called by Nodal, Thraeg.

Ah, and I forgot: there's another class, from Forgotten Circles: the Diviner! I'll add that to the starting roster. Looks like a VERY hard class, though.

All right, School of Online just started for the kids so we'll probably be busy adjusting for the next few days. And I need a little time to work out the TTS interface for myself. So maybe we can try to get a first game in next week? Does next Thursday (9/3) work for everyone? We'd have room for four to play and I think others could watch.

Thursday 9/3 signups:
Players:
1: Sarc
2. jpfriction
3. Nodal
4. aturtledoesbite

Observers:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

It would definitely be evening Thursday, for me. Probably 8 p.m. PST or so? I gotta wait till the kids are in bed.

If that doesn't work we can try to do another one soon so everyone gets a game in close together.

Oh by the way, y'all might want to download a helper app or two to help track your character state between games. Gloomhaven Companion and Gloomhaven Fight Companion come to mind; the former includes an enhancement cost calculator, and the latter includes all the class cards. Both track perks and basic character status. They're free, but Gloomhaven Fight Companion has ads.

You can check ahead and see what sorts of abilities your character will get as they level up (and which characters we'll eventually unlock), but it can be fun not to.

It might depend on the TTS mod you've chosen, but the ones I've always used supports persistent characters between sessions provided that someone keeps saves, and the new one makes it quick and easy to swap out characters between one session and another (which is presumably a concern in this case). You can just click a button to "box up" the character, and swap in a new box to automagically spread everything out, and it will remember all stickers, writing on the character sheets, etc. The only sticking point for you folks is that you'd need some continuity between sessions (which is to say, you'd need at least one person to transfer the save file from one group to the next, which might be challenging if there's no overlap in players).

Yeah, my thinking is that off-TTS tracking of characters as a backup would prevent any disasters from lost saves, etc.

I suppose we could set up a Dropbox or something for the save file to be kicked into every time a group plays a session.

ALSO it looks like the JotL characters are now available individually in the Steam workshop.

I can do that! I might run a liiiiiiiittle late, though.

That's OK, doesn't have to be 8 on the dot and as a learning game I'd figure it'll be a slowish start.

OK, we've got our starting four. Anyone who wants to spectate the first game in TTS, let me know and I'll make sure to let you all know when the game is going to be on. And if you don't already have me as a Steam friend, feel free to add (same name as here).

Oh, and since this just occurred to me, I thought it was worth a mention, before I forget: I have... reason to believe that certain persons playing next Thursday might be inclined to rename player tokens, and FYI, this can and will break the very complicated scripts that this mod uses to automate several functions. So probably don't do that! Learn from my mistakes!

Noted! Like what tokens do you mean and why would they be renamed?

I'm excited there's enough interest in this for a full house!

So, pretty much any object in TTS can be "named" with its own mouse-over text, and this can be a fun opportunity to goof or inject flavour. In my group, we renamed our standees, which default to names like "Mindthief", to use our actual RP character names instead. But that means that when the scripts to automatically collect loot tokens or synchronize player heath on the player board with the standee HUD search for that specific standee in code, they fail to find it and throw an error. We had this problem for weeks until someone actually decided to dig around in the code and was able to determine the cause. I'd just recommend not renaming anything, to be safe.

ETA: Well, formally, at least. If you want to, say, summon a bear and informally refer to it as Sir Reginald de Mimsy, then all power to you.

*extremely hacker voice* I'm in.

Thanks for posting for me, JBear.

I'm available most nights, although Mon/Tues probably work best since I don't have to be at work at 7AM PST the next morning.

Noted, thanks Jbear!

Welcome, liquid!

The initial Thursday game isn't meant to establish any sort of set schedule, and my hope for this is that people will schedule and play their own ad hoc games as they please without needing a set date that works for everyone at once. The campaign mechanics are built to accommodate a fluid play group so I figure we might as well take full advantage of that.

I haven't set up a calendar or anything yet because Busy, but I will by next Thursday.

Quick note on something that can trip people up when planning their move: you cannot create and use an element on the same turn, but you can use an element somebody else created on the same turn.

Yup, that's one of many rules that we fucked when we started playing: elements only get created at the end of each player's turn. I'd also suggest carefully reading the rules for Advantage and Disadvantage and how they apply to "rolling" cards and cards where it's ambiguous which is better or worse. The TLDR is that Advantage is not nearly as good as it looks at first blush, and is in some cases just identical to Disadvantage.

Like MtG, this has a variety of rules that you don't need to know 99% of the time, but will occasionally bite you in the ass.

Of course, unlike MtG, this is cooperative, so it's easy enough to just agree on something that makes sense in the moment without digging through the rulebook.
