An impossible task but imma try it anyway. Off the top of my head, and a self-imposed limit of one album per artist (otherwise my list would be half Smashing Pumpkins):

Failure, Fantastic Planet
Smashing Pumpkins, Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness
Alice in Chains, Dirt
Tori Amos, Boys For Pele
Descendents, Hallraker
Samiam, You Are Freaking Me Out
Sleigh Bells, Reign of Terror
Rush, Moving Pictures
Mastodon, Blood Mountain
Nine Inch Nails, The Downward Spiral

Really need like a Top 50 albums. I keep thinking, "OH! What about <band>!".

7) Sheer Heart Attack - Queen

Yeeeessss. I came this close to picking a Queen album but I couldn't decide between Queen II or A Day At The Races.

Behemoth

At the risk of getting too navel-gazey, I've had my Desert Island Five locked down for years, but I'm not sure that's quite the same thing as favorite five? That said, in the absence of a better alternative I'll start with my Desert Island Five and see what additional albums I would add to the mix. I'm also limiting myself to one album per artist.

UPDATE: Oof, this is tough. I'm having a hard time balancing old stuff v. newer(ish) stuff. For example, Sadness is a band I discovered last year and immediately became super important to me in a deeply personal way, to the point that they may be my favorite band ever, but I've also only had their music bouncing around in my head for less than a year, so do they deserve a spot over Sunset Rubdown (or Spencer Krug generally), or Godspeed You! Black Emperor, or Beach House, or any number of other perennial favorites? This is why I both love and hate making lists.

UPDATE 2: Okay, this is where I've ended up. I reserve the right to update and modify this as my whims may dictate.

1. Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
2. Paul Simon - Graceland
3. Pixies - Doolittle
4. Mountain Goats - Tallahassee
5. Panda Bear - Person Pitch
6. Arcade Fire - Funeral
7. Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam
8. The Knife - Tomorrow in a Year
9. Run the Jewels - Run the Jewels 3
10. Deafheaven - Sunbather

Hmm... I'm having a hard time making cuts from my "top" 12/13 albums to get down to 10. :(

What's Shenmue?
Tough, very tough. Ten albums is really not a lot. I tried to make this vaguely representative, which meant a hard limit of one album per artist as well as trying to include a wider selection of genres. So this isn't quite my ten favourite albums… but I stand by it as a "top 10" for being a decent overview of my taste.
  1. Scott Walker - The Drift
  2. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
  3. Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven
  4. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
  5. Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
  6. NEU! - NEU!
  7. Tangerine Dream - Rubycon
  8. Nick Drake - Pink Moon
  9. The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground & Nico
  10. PJ Harvey - Let England Shake

Still a lot of tough cuts! Including, uh, my favourite band.

Let's Pock (Art @szk_tencho)
(he / his / him)
  1. Spiritual Machines, Our Lady Peace
  2. The Colour and the Shape, Foo Fighters
  3. Decomposer, The Matches
  4. Beneath the Skin, Of Monsters and Men
  5. Jubilee, Japanese Breakfast
  6. Gambling with God, Magneta Lane
  7. technicolor, covet
  8. Automatic for the People, R.E.M.
  9. Swoon, Silversun Pickups
  10. Soviet Kitsch, Regina Spektor
I feel this is pretty accurate, if a little out of order, for me right this moment.

So just like Spinal Tap's amps my list goes to 11. (In alphabetical order because choosing these albums was hard enough alredy.)
  • 16 Greatest Hits, Steppenwolf ‡
  • Chronicle: The 20 Greatest Hits, Creedence Clearwater Revival ‡
  • Chronicles, Rush ‡
  • Deepest Purple: The Very Best of Deep Purple, Deep Purple
  • Greatest Hits, Queen (1992 US edition cover) ‡
  • Master of Puppets / Kill 'Em All, Metallica *
  • Sailing the Seas of Cheese, Primus
  • Skynyrd's Innyrds: Their Greatest Hits, Lynyrd Skynyrd
  • The Best of The Guess Who, The Guess Who
  • The Ultimate Experience, Jimi Hendrix
  • "Weird Al" Yankovic in 3-D, "Weird Al" Yankovic
So I have a challenge for you, Talking Time - choose one of those albums to remove from my list (since I'm not able to) - but you can only remove an album if you're familiar with it or the corresponding band.

(Using compilations / greatest hits albums still feels like cheating but Issun said to go for broke so I went for it.)

‡ Most of the compilation albums I picked are what I consider to be the minimum essential songs to listen to for those bands. The albums I have marked are ones that still leave out one or two other songs that I also consider to be essential. Also, I think that is the case for the Queen album but I can't exactly remember.

* To be honest Ride is probably my actual top 11 10 pick but it was already chosen so I decided to go with the albums that are tied for second behind it.

If given my choice, I'm removing Primus from that list. Fantastic band - I've seen them twice - but top ten material, especially considering the company, is fairly questionable to me.

I would get rid of Metallica because I hate Metallica.

Off the top of my head, and a self-imposed limit of one album per artist (otherwise my list would be half Smashing Pumpkins):
Gish and Siamese Dream would be on my list as well if I didn't limit the Smashing Pumpkins to one album.

Smashing Pumpkins. Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness.
Pearl Jam. Ten.
Guns N' Roses. Appetite for Destruction.
The Hold Steady. Killer Parties.
Weezer. Blue Album.
Low. The Great Destroyer.
Sleater Kinney. The Woods.
Led Zeppelin. Led Zeppelin I.
The Misfits. Walk Among Us.
Madonna. The Immaculate Collection.

Yeah, if I was not limiting myself to only one album per artist the list would look something like:

Failure, Fantastic Planet
Smashing Pumpkins, Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness
Smashing Pumpkins, Siamese Dream
Smashing Pumpkins, The Aeroplane Flies High*
Alice in Chains, Dirt
Tori Amos, Boys For Pele
Tori Amos, Little Earthquakes
Rush, Moving Pictures
Nine Inch Nails, The Downward Spiral
Nine Inch Nails, Broken

*
All of the songs on Aeroplane are included in the expanded/anniversary release of Mellon Collie, along with some additional b-sides and demos, turning the two-disc album into a five-disc album. I'm using the original releases on my list, otherwise I assume the anniversary release of Mellon Collie and switch out Aeroplane for...something else. Not quite sure what. I really like GIsh but Adore has grown on me substantially since its release.
