Will I ever truly understand the plot of the Metal Gear series?

There's a lot of proper nouns flying around in Metal Gear games, but thematically they're very simple stories. If you have specific questions, I believe I remember enough of what happened in the games to clear up any confusion with answers.

Except for MGSV, fuck that game.

Best gameplay in the series, but Kojima's decision to go super grimdark right out of the gate threw me for a loop, and my opinion never recovered. Plus the main villain was pretty meh compared to the rogues gallery of previous games.

How to understand Metal Gear:
1- Watch Escape from New York.
2- Actually play the MSX games.
3- Understand there's a lot of just silly videogame stuff and pervy stuff and anime BS.
4- Nuclear weapons are bad.
5- Cardboard boxes are good.
6- Sometimes a guy ends up directing a big game franchise while internally conflicted about sexuality and things get weird.
7- A lot of this is just wacky videogame stuff you're not supposed to take seriously.
8- Just pretend 2 didn't happen because it largely didn't and then I guess play 4 if that's not acceptable.

Alternatively, get into the GI Joe franchise; it’s extremely similar in terms of content and tone (just with 80s sports stars instead of 80s action movie stars), and represents far less of a time commitment and video game proficiency

Understanding Kojima's works is like his famous Twitter bio says: "70% of my body is made of movies, and 100% of misogyny."

Imagine if Bret Easton Ellis wrote the novelization to Robocop, retaining the feature of his works like American Psycho where all the characters are gay but not a single one of them says so, but setting it in a military context rather than civilian forces.

That's Metal Gear. It's like Robocop, but really weird about women.
