With it all but closed, I'd like to get a decent picture of TT's overall feelings on the best games of the generation (PS4/XBox One/WiiU/Switch, and PC games released between 2014 and 2020), so if you can rank them, please do.

My list:

  1. Life is Strange
  2. Undertale
  3. NieR: Automata
  4. Inside
  5. Sayonara Wild Hearts
  6. Eastshade
  7. What Remains of Edith Finch
  8. Shovel Knight

  1. Nier: Automata
  2. Monster Hunter World
  3. Hades
  4. XCOM 2
  5. God of War
  6. Marvel's Spider-Man

Do retro compilations or remakes count or are we only considering actual new games (but IP of any age)?

While I am hoping to get some sort of consolidated list out of this, this isn't an official "Top 50" list where things are already pretty nebulous. So I'd like to see a list with only new releases, but it'd also be cool to see what compilations you loved from the generation, so if you'd be willing to make two lists, one with compilations and remasters and one without, that'd be interesting.

Remakes like RE2 and FF7 would totally count, I should think, as they're almost new games.

Too many Switch games that aren't out yet for me to give a definitive listing. But, off the top of my head, here's some:
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
  • A Short Hike
  • Doom (2016)
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  • Dragon Quest XI
  • Deltarune
  • Baba Is You
  • Metroid Dread
  • Super Mario Odyssey

I refuse to admit the Switch generation is over, dangit! Xbone is also hard to believe, but with a few games only being compatible with the S or whatever sure why not. Anyway, here's my list, I didn't even get to the Switch games but it's already too long and I've been staring at it for days so I give up

Spiritfarer
Undertale
Rocket League
The Messenger
Untitled Goose Game
Final Fantasy XV
Halo Infinite
Wii Fit U
Cuphead
Westerado: Double Barreled
Firewatch
Her Story
VA-11 Hall-A

Beowulf

Son of The Answer Man

PS4:
Dragon Quest Builders 2
Dragon Quest Heroes II
Nier Automata
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

The time period feels a bit arbitrary to me (some of these are primarily PC or Switch games, one is for the SNES!), but here are the games I feel the strongest about from 2014-2020:

1. Hollow Knight
2. XCOM 2: War of the Chosen
3. Quickie World 2
4. Subnautica
5. Breath of the Wild
6. Celeste
7. Overwatch
8. Slay the Spire
9. Witcher 3
10. Control
11. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes

There are definitely another 5-6 games that I really, really enjoyed, but they don't quite make the cut. It's been a good couple of years for video games! Especially 2017, good lord.

Okay, going to do this thing and I'm going to try not to thing about it too much and then inevitably regret not including something. Also in no particular order:

3. Super Mario Odyssey
4. Hollow Knight
5. Shovel Knight
6. Witcher 3
7. Stardew Valley
8. Persona 5
9. Hades
10. Mario Kart 8

What's Shenmue?
There's still something like half a dozen big-name titles (and an infinite amount of smaller ones) that I haven't gotten around to yet that could be in the running, so I only barely stand by this— it'll surely be different in five years (maybe even two years). But for now, here's what I think. Re-releases are in alphabetical order rather than ranked.

New releases:
  1. The Last Guardian
  2. Toki Tori 2
  3. Wattam
  4. Bloodborne
  5. Assault Android Cactus
  6. Xenoblade Chronicles X
  7. Tacoma
  8. Yoshi's Crafted World
  9. Wolfenstein: The New Order
  10. Shenmue III

Compilations and re-releases:
  • Castlevania Anniversary Collection
  • Gleylancer
  • moon
  • SEGA AGES Phantasy Star
  • SaGa Frontier
  • Turrican Flashback

NO ORDER

Axiom Verge
Bloodstained Ritual of the Moon
Gears 5
Wasteland 3
Resident Evil 7
Fallout 4
Final Fantasy XII Zodiac Age
Streets of Rage 4
Dragon Age Inquisition
Mortal Kombat X

Without Order

Hollow Knight
Sekiro
Dark Souls 3
Nier Automata
Undertale
Iconoclasts
Metal Gear Solid V
Hades
Guilty Gear Xrd Rev2
Freedom Planet

For remakes and compilations, Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir

Sarge

Tricky, but here we go...

Super Mario 3D World
Breath of the Wild
Super Mario Odyssey
God of War (2018)
Shovel Knight
Freedom Planet
Blaster Master Zero
Metroid Dread
Ys VIII
Bloodstained

I think this is it, no particular order. Lots of other great stuff that I could put (The Messenger, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Octopath Traveler, Streets of Rage 4, Curse of the Moon, Hollow Knight, Iconoclasts, and we keep on rolling), but this aligns well with my sensibilities.
